I'm not even on this site a week and I'm already out searching ePay for a brush to restore! :glare: Considering my other hobby is restoring old woodworking machines (and if you know the site for that, yes, I'm the same guy with the same screen name) this was just bound to happen. But I thought I'd at least last a week before I caved!

Zombie Dad:

As our member Chris would say, "Resistance is futile!" At least now when you restore old woodworking equipment you can use it to restore brushes.

Enjoy the ride.

You laugh, I'm already plotting out if there's a market for custom turned shaving brush handles.

Didn't anyone tell you?

This site is full of enablers.

Welcome to B&B! You will be successful if you are able to limit your AD to just one area, i.e., brushes. However, it usually spreads to mulitple areas, razors, brushes, colognes, soaps, etc. That's when you know you have really fallen prey to the enablers on this board. :tongue_sm

Fortunately, my passions lie in restorations (tools, brushes, razors, etc). Smelling great is the job of SWMBO.

Yep we're all a bunch of enablers here so don't look for any support.

You do know however that research shows that vintage butterscotch brushes are radioactive , and any you find should be sent to a small island as south as you can go to be disposed of. :001_rolle

When you find some let me know and I'll send you my address

:a50:I finally won an ePay auction!:lol:

Two brushes (one an Ever Ready, the other I'm not sure on) should be on their way soon. I'll post photos once they're in my hot little hands. These both look like shedders (which may explain the lack of bidding wars on them).

Now to load up the ol' watch list with badger hair knots...

listen the only way to cure this type of affliction is to feed it and document the process, sharing the pictures with your B&B acquaintances :)

I will break out the resto work in a separate post, but I'll be sure to post an initial photo here as well as a link to the restoration work.

Half the fun of doing the restoration is showing off your work!

When I saw the package being dropped off, I nearly tackled my wife who stepped out to get the mail. She left for work a few minutes ago and I dug into the box with wild abandon.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/crankcase/Shaving/DSCN5427.jpg

The one on the right is an Ever Ready 75K (I'll have to hunt down the numbering post to see what the age is).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v217/crankcase/Shaving/DSCN5429.jpg

The left number is a Nevershed (which it's currently doing with abandon). I should be able to contact the company about this; their design was only patented on Valentine's Day '05. :wink2:

Now my first restoration question: how does one measure for a new knot? Eyeball it with a ruler or break out the micrometer?

Scott

P.S. The restoration work post for these will be linked here (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?p=2868006#post2868006).

The first thing you will want to do is remove the old knot and clean out the hole. then you can measure for a knot using whatever means you have to do that. If you have a micrometer all the better.

if you only have a regular ruler measure the inches as closely as possible then multiply that by 2.54 and you will have cm ... then multiply that number by 10 and you will mm for example

1.00 inch x 2.54 = 2.54 cm x 10 = 25.40 mm round this up or down to the nearest even number and that will be your knot size.

The restore forums should give you all the details for how to remove the knot. if it doesn't just ask and you will get lots of answers.

Considering I'm studying to become a teacher, that is one of the few conversions I still remember without thinking hard or looking it up. Even so, it gives me an excuse to break out the mike so I will.

Considering all the mad love for butterscotch brushes, I expected more competition. Shockingly, I was the sole bidder.

Make sure to tape up the handles before you start digging out the old knots.

I take a regular pair of scissors and trim the old hair as far down as I can, then go to a Dremel or drill press with a Forstner bit.

Works a treat.:001_smile

Very exciting time when you shave with it for the 1st time.
