What is the difference between 2 band and 3 band? is it the coloration of the badger hair? Is one preferable to the other? Is it a loft issue? What effect to the # of bands have on lathering?

3 bands are louder and have more instruments!

But seriously, it really depends on the hair grade. You have to be more specific about what hair grade before you can start to answer those questions. But, I do think that 2 band hair tends to be stiffer and have more "backbone". You are more likely to find 2 band in a Finest grade and 3 band in a Silvertip grade.

2 band refers to the type of badger hair being used. It is also called 'finest'. You can often see that the hairs are made up of a black band, and a white band.
I really love 2 band brushes because they have enough back bone, or stiffness, to work on your soaps, but they are still very soft on your face.

To simplify.....2 band is two bands of color. Black at base and white at top.
3 band is three bands of color. Lighter base. Dark middle and
lighter top section.

2 band is "Finest"
Check out this thread:http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=2355&highlight=difference+grades
It might not have too much info on 2band but it should help with sorting out most other types of badger hair. Hope this helps.

The two-band at Simpson's is called "Super".
There is no general rule: two band, can be named Finest, Super and sometimes it is also called Silvertip (like Shavemac - Silvertip two-band D01, or New Forest - finest silvertip). Unfortunately for us, there is no standardizing agreement between the makers and one can call it whatever they like.....

Two band is really three band, but with a larger second band. This can be seen on some two-band brushes (mostly ones with larger lofts), where a third band may be poking out.

Thanks Rudy, I didn't realize that.

Also what has traditionally been considered to be two band has all but vanished and has been replaced by 2 band which is far inferior to the old.

I've actually seen some Simpsons Best 2 bands, some Chubbys and Dukes due to their shorter lofts....so either to answer your question.

Interesting and provocative statement. Please explain...

Two band refers to the number of bands visible - nothing more.

You could have a two-band from Rooney (Finest or Heritage Super, both different), Shavemac (D01) and Simpsons (they seem to have two-band in Best and Super), all will be different in terms of face feel.

I've had two two-bands from Simpsons. A Duke and a Simfix Grosvenor LE.

They both had widely different hair, even within the brand. The Duke was incredibly stiff but did have softish tips. The Grosvenor was less dense yet had very prickly tips, quite unpleasant. More like low-end Best hair, to me! My experience differs to a lot of people with the Grosvenor - could be good old sample variation.

My New Forest 2201 has fantastic hair, really soft tips, and cost a fraction of my other two-band brushes.

+1 on the New Forest! I have the 2202 and the hair is outstanding, super dense and soft with the perfect backbone for hard soaps. A fraction of what the big names charge!
