View Full Version : Good alternative to Merkur moustache razor.

I bought one of these Merkur moustache razors on Amazon, and I agree with some of the reviews......the blades are a joke! I figured maybe I'd be of the ones that it might work out for, but I don't know. I'll give it a couple days, since Amazon gives you 30 days to simply return something.

My question is....are there any good alternatives to this razor? It's a neat design, if the blade was sharp. I guess sharpening the blade is just a ludicrous thought?? Thanks!

When I used to have a moustache/goatee, I would use one of those flip-up electric sideburn trimmers to outline the area first, and then just shave up to it with the regular DE.

The Merkur mustache razor is a bad concept all around. It uses proprietary blades only available from Merkur. Merkur blades are not very well liked around here.

One could accomplish the same thing easier, and much cheaper with a Schick Injector, or any two bladed cartridge razor.

I've got one and I think it's a bad design. Because it's so narrow it's easy to dig the corner in and cut yourself. I only reluctantly use it when I'm shaving with my adjustable. I might actually retire it permanently and use any fixed head razor instead.

You could use a straight or a shavette

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a shick injector is just an inexpensive replaceable blade razor I can pick up at Walmart or similar store, yes?

Schick injector razors are no longer available to be purchased brand new at a store. The B/S/T or eBay would be your best bet to get one.

Blades are made, but the handles are not made any more.

Yeah, I quickly found that out right after my post, lol! I'm assuming the advantage of the injector would be the narrow shaving head, allowing it to fit in the same places as this (useless) Merkur, yes?

If you are going from a full beard to something less clippers help to start with. If you are just figuring out a goatee from a week of not shaving just lather up and draw out the edges of your beard to be . . . and shave out from there.

I'm finding open comb style razors such as Gillette New to be very precise and maneuverable in tight quarters around my beard and mustache.

Actually, I'm just concerned with the little bit right under my nose, and then along the top of my moustache, to keep it a certain width, if you know what I mean. It seemed the merkur would be great for that, but the blades are really just garbage.

What about something like this, as was suggested? http://www.amazon.com/Parker-Straight-Barber-Razor-Stainless/dp/B002OXJ6II/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1297043337&sr=8-5

I second the open comb. You can get in really close. Right in between the nose and the top of the mo. In my case there's not enough width to shave other than north-south-north but it works very well.

I just sent a pm to someone that is selling a New, in the buy/sell/trade section.

Get a Gillette travel tech. It's super small and has a flat head so you can see what you're doing in the detailing. And they're cheap if you find one.

Although it will work with a Tech I find that you can get in closer with an open comb.

I work on getting the upper lip area with whatever razor I am using at the time. Both an open comb and safety bar and the straight on the weekend. Honestly the straight is the easiest for me to use for the mustache. I do a better job on that area than some areas of the rest of my face...

Yes, that is correct. The Schick Injector has a much narrowed head than any DE razor, and the head is held nearly flat against the face, so you don't have to worry about blade angle very much.

Hmmm, now I don't know what to do. There is an injector for sale on here with 12 blades for $35, and a Gillette New I can get for $15. The New will just use standard DE blades, yes?

I see nobody actually commented on this link. As Shavette style razors go, the Parker is one of the better built ones. If you want precise trimming of your mustache it's probably the way to go, as it will be far easier to maneuver into tight areas that any DE razor, or any safety razor. There will be a bit of a learning curve though.

I honestly fail to see why the Gillette New (or any open comb) would be an improvement for shaving under the nose. The physical size of the head is the same as any other DE razor; you need to make an "O shape" with your mouth to force the hairs down so the DE razor can effectively shave them.

So, I may be best off with the injector then, as I don't really care to "learn" how to use any type of straight razor.

BIC Metal, available at Walgreen's. Narrow head gets right in there.

Yes, a NEW will take standard DE-blades. It is a great shaver :thumbup1: However you should be able to pick up a nice injector for about the same price.

I hate to ask, but is a EVERSHARP SHICK INJECTOR SAFETY RAZOR #7. just a fancier way of saying Shick Injector? :001_huh:

Probably. sounds like a clueless e-bay made up title, though. If I saw the picture I could tell you for sure.

Looks like a Type E/ Type G Schick Injector. A great shaver!!

Until I got a bit better with a DE, I used the thinnest disposable I could find. They last forever just shaving half of the upper lip!

But eventually I figured out that making an "O" with my mouth and pushing up on the tip of my nose gave me enough room for any of my DEs.

And it looks quite suave, too. Ok, not really, but it works.

Yeah, no one else bid, so I got it. I'm assuming they all take the same injector blades, yes? Want to make sure I order the right ones.

They do; you have found yourself a nice razor. The older types (like this one) are a bit less mild than the newer models.
