I read at
http://leisureguy.wordpress.com/2007/01/26/the-alum-bar/
that some Indian food stores might carry alum blocks, under the name "phatkari".
Are there some other Indian shaving supplies to also look for at your local Indian store? Perhaps some patchouli shaving soap?

Mysore sandalwood soap - its fantastic and very inexpensive:

I just bought some from a local health food store ($1.6 Canadian for a 75gm/2.6oz bar). It useses real sandalwood oil and is very strongly scented - this is a must for the sandalwood lover. I'm going back to the store and buying up every last bar at this price. The scent is so strong that you could use a bar to scent a drawer or closet. The scent does stay with you for a bit - even if you just wash your face/hands, but what a scent! The same company also makes a talc that I've only seen here:

I've never seen the alum, but most Indian groceries carry a wide variety of interesting soaps - Nag Champa is a major supplier.

Here's a link to a site (that I've not used) that sells all of these products at very good prices and has a flat $6.95 shipping to the US and free shipping on orders over $50.

Happy shopping!

Thanks,
do all these soaps work fine as shaving soaps? (Shaving don't seem to be mentioned on these soaps packagings.)

+1 on the Sandalwood Soap! Good stuff - great smell. The Indian stores are awesome for your spice purchases, too

You could try it, but I doubt it - what do you have to lose?

I picked up a couple of small alum blocks for .99 each at a local Indian market.
Indian markets also have great soaps, spices, and some even carry my favorite soda, Thumbs Up Cola.
