I'm not gonna lie.....i like it.
I think the extra time with the brush on my face helps soften my beard. Plus the scent of my cream lingered longer which was pleasant. This might be how i lather from now on....
anyone else prefer lathering on the face?

Certain people really like face lathering and there are others who don't. I am in the 3rd group, those that love it but can't all the time due to my face being really sensitive.

I love face lathering. Sadly, for some reason, Illinios water won't permit this for me. It works like a champ in Korea, but I have to bowl lather at home.

Can't imagine lathering any other way.

Try a Tabac shave stick and face lather with that....Outstanding !

Ah yup. Same amount of time +/- in lather prep. Sensory experience is a plus, beard prep is a plus. Consider water hardness, brush type. YMMV

Welcome! Been face lathering for 30+ years, ever since my father taught me as a wee lad.
His reasoning? "Soap is cheap. 'Foamy' is a ripoff." I never looked back.
I've always just used plain soap and cheap boars from the drugstore, but since going DE, I've gotten bad case of AD. Now up[ to two badger brushes and a couple razors.

I started off bowl lathering and now face lather 100% of the time.

Yeah I started bowl lathering but tried face lathering after a couple weeks of starting with a DE, brush and soap. I love it! I recently got a QEDman shave stick and it makes the whole face lathering experience even better. Luckily I have no problems with hard water or sensitive skin so I get to do it often. Occasionally I will bowl lather but that is becoming the road less traveled.

Always. You almost can't get a bad lather that way; you just feel when it's right.

+1. My lather has improved a lot since I started face lathering.

+2. Like a good newb I started out bowl lathering to learn the process. After reading so many posts on B&B about face lathering and finding myself in a hotel with no large cups/bowls available I gave it a try. All I can say is WOW! It really works great. I face lather almost exclusively these days and am glad I listened to our long term members and gave it a try. I hope you enjoy the process as much as I do. Enjoy your shaves. :thumbup1:

I bowl lather my creams. I did just get a tub of Cella and I face lathered that. I think I will always face lather with that soap. I really enjoyed building lather with that soap that way.
Plus I tend to use my pure badger for creams and it's too scritchy for face lathering. I use my boar for soaps and it's nice and soft making it ideal for face lathering.

I only face lather now. I see no reason to use a bowl and agree with all your stated reasons. Feels good, more cream, soap contact time, no extra bowl to rinse out, can really adjust the quality of lather and vary it day to day, whim to whim, product to product. It is the easiest way to super lather-apply cream directly to face with fingers and load brush with soap, face lather-outstanding! I apply all creams directly to face, not to brush, so it is immediately smooth and lubricating when I lather with the brush. Obviously, same with shave sticks.

I only face lather. What made a huge difference was the acquisition of a couple of quality shave brushes-a Simpson's Colonel and a Savile Row 3722. I face lather with both soaps and creams for a minimum of 2 minutes before I shave. The brushes and the time spent in lathering took my shaves to the next level. I tried bowl lathering, but simply found it was not as effective for me. As usual, you will find proponents of both and you have to decide what works best for you.

I am a fan of both. I tend to switch between the two, a couple of months here, a couples of months there. But at the moment I'm loving the face lather.

If you really want to enhance that face lathering experience...get a nice boar...it doesn't get any better than that. :thumbup1:

But recently I tried face lathering. I reckon face lathering is better for me, but also from doing the face lathering I reckon I wasn't building up the lather properly and I certainly wasn't massaging the lather onto my face properly.
If any newbie doesn't feel they are getting the best from bowl lathering, I would urge them to try face lathering because it will give a better shave immediately and show them how to lather properly whether or not they stick with face lathering or go back to bowl lathering.
I use a bowl when I test a new shaving soap or shaving cream, other than that, it's always face lathering.

No, you're not the only one my shaving friend. Some time ago, I purchased a Robert Becker Ceramic (medium with Lid and Flat Stopper), 'Cactus Sand' Scuttle and although I've used it many times, I am still kind of partial to using my 'own' Sterling Silver Baby Cup my Mother (finally!!), gave me (as my family Keepsake), many...many 'moons' ago (it's engraved with my name, birthday and these notes;
"To Smoke is Human...To Smoke Cigars is Divine"
"A Great Lather is Half the Shave"
One benefit of face lathering is that it gives a great exfoliating sensation on my face which I find quite pleasing and look forward to every morning. When I go for a second pass (atg),...I just re-lather with hot water.
Another benefit of my cup is that is small enough (2 1/2in wide), that it would easily fits my Chelsea's Unscented Shave Soap perfectly...unwrap...in the cup...no hassles...no issues and at the same time only being 2in deep, it prevents almost all shave brush 'clanking'.

Face lathering seems the most sensible option to me. I didn't even know there was any other way until I found this site.

I forgot to mention that I have a DB brush scuttle that makes my face lathering even more amazing.

+1 on the brush scuttle. The warm lather really does enhance the process. Add a Semogue 1305 or a Simfix Grosvenor -it just don't get any better!

Hi all,
As a recent DE convert, I have mostly been bowl lathering and that works fairly well. However, I have tried face lathering (including this morning) and it seems like the first pass is excellent with lots of soap. Unfortunately the next pass (and third pass) progressively have substantially less soap. I even tried extra loading this morning (with Proraso soap - sensitive) but it seems like most of the soap is lost on the first pass.
I have a fairly new omega boar brush which is only a couple weeks old. Will this improve as the brush breaks in? Or should I be doing something different?
Thanks,
CZ

If I seem to be running out of lather I either add some water to the lather already on my brush or go back to the puck. There is no sin in going back to the puck.

I face lather soaps and bowl lather creams, but since I started doing this I find myself reaching for the soaps more often than the creams!
