Wow. Talk about taking you back. I clicked on this and it gave a list of songs that Roger did back in the 60's.

I met Roger when I was in the Air Force stationed in the Philippines in 1967. He gave a show at the airman's club, the show he gave was great, and he took the extra time to talk and mingle with the guys there. Roger was a true professional and a real gentleman. :thumbup1:

While I have lots of respect and appreciation for his music, this song is a little, umm... idiosyncratic.

I am old enough to remember the Burma Shave signs on the side of the road.

I think they were what Roger is referencing in his song.

I just saw this and put it in the Burma Shave thread that Mama Bear started in the Clown House and thought that others might want to see this.

He is referencing the road signs and some of the jingles (Pappy line in the song). I was a little surprised with this song and its structure when I first heard this, but he did record several novelty songs along with standard songs that had a novelty catch (Dang Me).

I can remember when Mom & Dad took us on trips, usually over in Tennesse & the Carolinas, back in mid 50's and looking for and reading the Burma Shave signs with glee. Also looked for the barns painted with the "See Rock City" ads.

Roger Miller is a favorite of mine. I'm no musician but a lot of his songs, even the silly ones, seem deceptively complex to me. Like this one. If I was a singer I would imagine that it would be a pretty difficult tune to spit out:

I wonder if he had to pay Burma Shave for the use of their name or did they pay him advertisement fees. In that day it was probably neither!

Tom Waits also recorded a song called "Burma Shave" but in true Waits fashion, it is not at all bouncy and fun as is the Roger Miller version.
