Thanks to jansobs generous PIF:thumbup1:, I was able to try my first open comb experience this morning. I loaded the Gillette New with a Personna (jansob tossed in some for me to try, thanks) and got to work. This morning however I also decided to try some überlather as well. Not a good idea. I changed to many parameters of my shaving, so I ended up with a mediocre shave. The lather was not so good that it should be (C&E Sandalwood and Prorazo, smelled good, but I didn't nail it. Maybe some glycerine will help?), first time with an open comb, first time with new blade (normally use Feather), and of course the New is significant lighter than my 38C so I think I applied some pressure to get the same feeling on my skin. Didn't get any nicks tough, but not happy with my result. Anyhow, I like the New. Just have to adapt my technique a bit.
I guess I 'll take a step back and go for my normal routine tomorrow, and try the New again with Feather before I compare with Personna.

By the way, it's not an uberlather unless you add glycerin; soap + cream = superlather.

Good luck with the NEW.

Stick with the old routine, just use the new razor. And even though the NEW is lighter than the razor you're used to, I would recommend against applying pressure. Make sure your angle is right and you shouldn't need to apply any.

Coincidently I used a new New to me for the first time today. Personna Med blade, second day. Having come from getting comfortable with a red tip I need to shave with this like a very, very dry martini. The New is noticably top heavier than the red tip. I started out ok and on the second pass found that I had begun to press just a wee bit. It felt super smooth but I managed one nick and a few weepers. I will check in with this great razor after some more time with the red tip.
I would personally rate this between the red tip and the G-Bar even though this making an interspecies comparison.

Google Map? Am I driving?

With the comb also make sure you are not leaving lines in the cream from the comb if you do this means bad angle. I use an Aristocrat and an Old Timer love both!!

Thanks for your advices folks.

I tried the New again this morning, and I stuck to my usual prep. I'll leave all the (s)uberlather stuff 'till later. I changed back to Feather blade, and it got a lot better today. I ended up pretty darn smooth, but my neck got some nicks. But I have to do so many passes (5 and touch up) to get anywhere with my neck anyhow, so it's not that different than usual. I don't get nicked with my 38C, but then again, I know it better.
The hair on my neck grows in so many different direction I get dissy just to try mapping it.
I think I'll go for Feathers for a week or so before changing to Personna.

Next stop is the pharmacy to get some glycerin.
