This months Pipe of the month is Drugstore Classics as suggested by Stroppy and selected by our members in the poll. I'm going to pick some up this weekend perhaps Walnut or PA crimp cut. If I could get my hands on Five Brothers I'd be all over it. And our neighbors across the pond have access to St. Bruno and Three Nuns (sigh)... there is some disparity in that I think.

I think I've got a little Carter Hall left over. I'm snowed in so it'll have to do for today.

OTOH...Byron's probably the best guy to talk to for Five Brothers http://www.pipetobaccotls.com/page04.html

I think I'm going to sit this one out. I'd love to try some of that stuff but I need to smoke up some of what I've already opened lest my position be overrun :001_tongu
Iced in, but I'll be getting something by the weekend.

He might, Blue 2 edited that in as I was posting my reply. But Paying $7 shipping for a pouch of the Brothers I dunno. I'll check around, you never know where those guys turn up, and I'll ask at the local tobacco outlet. I'm sure I'll find something that suits me. Part of the fun of these blends is I ought to be able to go local.

I'm going to go with two that I think are only available in Canada. Old Port and Amphora Full Aroma.

My drugstore blend of choice is Carter Hall. I am also enjoying some Half and Half. I have some 5 brothers as well. I also got a bit of sugar barrel to sample, that is good. I will have to buy some of it. I want to try some walnut. I would really like to try some OTC's from england. UNfortunately the only blends that I can get local is capt black, mixture 79, and granger in a tub. I don't want to spend too much money on a tub if I don't like it.

I haven't been too keen on the drugstore stuff, but I've really enjoyed Prince Albert. A very nice burley blend that smokes really well right out of the package. The Prince turned me on to other burleys, too - but it's absolutely worth a try. Very inexpensive and no need to dry it out - just put it in the bowl and go to town. Not bad at all!

I haven't smoked my pipes regularly since college (maybe 1-2x/yr now), but this list of tobaccos brings back so many fond memories. Thank you:001_smile

I smoked some PA in a cob tonight... I'm not sure what I expected, but this stuff is like smoking bark chips. Harsh, sour & woody. The only good thing I can say is that it stayed lit. I was going to try a couple of other OTC blends (I noticed H&H, CB, CH, & a few others at my grocery store), but I'm not sure now. What I was looking for was that sweet, nutty flavor I remember tasting in Edgeworth RR, but I guess the search continues. Maybe I should give SWR a shot?

I tried to get with the program here and put some Borkum Riff Whiskey in a Willard bulldog last night, but it tasted like Karo Syrup and formaldehyde.

It makes me wonder how my dad didn't die of toxic exposure or something, that stuff is a million ways to nasty.

Well, I guess I will fire up some Carter Hall then. It's open and I don't want to open up the Half and Half just yet. Carter Hall is the best Drug Store Brand IMO.

physio- PA is kinda bland to me. For OTC burley, I prefer Carter Hall. Half and half is pretty good too. ERR was a fine blend. I am waiting a sample of Uhles perfection plug which many people have told me that blend has made them much less sad that ERR is no longer made.

So I finally made it down to the store and decided to give something new a try and picked up a box of Carter Hall. Tried take a pinch out to dry in a small glazed terracotta bowl I keep for that sort of thing. Checked periodically and after a couple hours if there was a change it could only be detected by highly sensitive scientific instruments. To say this tobac has some PG is to say the ocean is damp:lol:. Loaded up a cob regardless and went at it. In the pouch it had a strong scent of anise with an undercurrent of fruit, green grape and winter fruits if I had to call it, not unlike juicy-fruit gum. The pouch scent overall reminded me most of IRC three star blue. It packed and lit easily, and again I was reminded of the IRC. Room note seemed a little ashy, almost cigarettish, at times as I was smoking. But leaving the room and retuning after a couple of seconds showed that the room actually smelled quite pleasant. While I certainly wouldn't call it a rich satisfying smoke, it wasn't as fleeting and week-kneed as my previous experience with OTC aromatics has been. I could sense it had the potential to bite if provoked but easing up cured it. I've payed more for smokes I've enjoyed no more. All in all a perfectly reasonable thing to put in your pipe, as a matter of fact I think I'll have another bowl.

Of this type of stuff I can only find Capt. Black , Prince Albert and Half & Half . I have some Half & Half left which I kind of like.

I've been smoking Amphora Full Aroma and Old Port as my choice of tobaccos for this month's outing and enjoying both of them. Both of these are blends that my father, grandfather and I were smoking over 40 years ago. At that time I believe Amphora was made by Dowe Egbert and Old Port, while it might not have been manufactured by Old Port, was the property of said company out of Montreal.
Amphora now carries the information that it's "Manufactured Under License From Van Nelle Tabac, Netherlands." I think this is coming from Imperial Tobacco Group, PLC. It's still nice stuff! Lose the pouch, put it in a jar, slap a jazzy name on it and you'd have an Aromatic that many smokers would rave about.
Old Port was a company in Montreal that also produced cigars and cigarillos (both "tipped" and "untipped" and a kind of "mini tipped cigarillo" called 'Colts.' These were, and still are, marketed as "Rum Flavored, Wine Dipped." The pipe tobacco is marketed as "Extra mild mellowed with Rum and Wine."
Old Port is now a property of Scandinavian Tobacco Group and is made in Denmark for Scandinavian Tobacco Group Canada. I can't honestly tell you if, or how much this has changed since it's been quite a while since I last smoked this one but I'm certainly enjoying it now. There's some pretty punchy flavor here that makes for a most enjoyable smoke, especially for those who appreciate burly.
These are couple of nice, clean, dry burning aromatics that still let the taste of the tobacco shine. Both recommended.

Just got some 5bros gifted me buy a friend, Thank you very much if you're reading:thumbup:, and loaded my pony express cob. A very fine shag of air cured and dark fired Kentucky. The draft on that cob was bit too open for it so I had to be very careful not to let it get harsh and ashy but whoo boy it'll pick you up and put you down. Next I'm gong to have it in my little coffee break that hasn't seen anything but Dark Birdseye in forever. I'm looking forward to seeing how it gets on with the Carter hall in a drug store mash-up. I've got some butternut burly that I used to love with this stuff as a sort of Saturday afternoon putzing around the house sort of blend.
