Me and the wife both had the day off today :w00t: so we hit up some antique stores. I didn't buy anything but I found a couple. All of this was not there the last time we went a week or two ago so at least they are getting stuff in. I still haven't found a decent straight razor locally yet. One store had three, but they wanted $40 FIRM for them and all three were in bad condition. Another store had some straights that had no tang stamps at all, and the plastic scales didn't even have wedges! They had a few more with artsy scales that were "razor" knives. :001_rolle
The tech was $4. I would have bought it if I didn't already have one just like it.

The two brushes were $18 EACH  and the old spice mug was $15

The last razor (an old type?) was $10 but the threaded part attached to the head was coming apart from the head. The combs were a lot smaller and the whole razor was a lot more dinky than my NEW Improved. The only thing stamped under the head was US ARMY. It had a Gillette case that was in pretty bad condition.

Sorry the pics are so bad, all I had was my cell phone.

Hey you're lucky if you have more than 2 antique stores.
I don't. :thumbdown
I'm doing my part to keep this thread alive.

Tip: You would probably get alot more looks on this post in the Safety Razor section.
Incidentally, that Old Type is a WWI kahki set. The case alone was probably worth the $10. Perhaps the razor could be fixed? Maybe the handle was cross-threaded and you can use the head on another Old Type handle.
I often come home empty handed these days from antique shops. My feeling is that so many people are out looking for old razors now they are getting harder to find, nevermind, cased razors!

The actual threaded part was fine, you know how if you look at the head from the top you can see the three circles where the pins are on the underside? The one in the middle was starting to poke up through the top of the head, you could feel it and see it started to come through.
The handle had the hairline crack, but it was smaller than the crack on my new improved.
The outside of the case was in fairly good condition, but the felt inside was rough, and most of the logo was gone. You could still see the diamond but couldn't read but a few letters of Gillette.

Ah, then you were probably right to leave it. It's likely it has had a lot of looks and been passed up before. Good finds in the wild are harder and harder to come by.

In several of my recent stops at shops, after inquiring about razors I have gotten the response, "Oh everyone's looking for them these days!" At one group of stores I had the distinct feeling that they had all been "cleaned out" by a fellow B&B'er just prior to my arrival - that was the only explanation for a complete lack of ANY razors!
Happy Hunting!

It could be that many of these shop owners are confusing 'safety razors' with 'straight razors'. I have had to clarify that on several occasions. In my experience, most shop owners/consignment folks don't have any idea that safety razors have value at all. Straights, on the other hand, are almost always very highly priced. I am so glad I am not a straight razor man!

I don't recall it being there when I went there last time. The case was closed and there was nothing that said "RAZOR" I just seen a brown box and happened to look.

I have been in some shops that have said the same thing.
But I went to a shop the other day and when I asked she said, "We had a straight razor in this case right here for about 3 or 4 months and we just sold it last week for $15. Now it could have been in bad shape, I didn't see it. But I have yet to find a decent straight "in the wild" that wasn't priced crazy.

eBay is the Devil! I can't even pick up a smelly mayonnaise jar at a garage sale without a 95 year old lady telling me "They get $6 for those on eBay". Some refuse to learn the difference between collectable and flat out junk.

I probably would have bought the old type if the head wasn't messed up so bad.

I'm with you about the straights...there's an antique store near my work that I poke my head into from time to time...this guy has got 6 straights all simply marked "Sheffield"...none of them appear to be salvagable (all have significant blade chunks missing from the shaving edge).
HE WANTS $65 A PIECE FOR THEM!!!

I have been surprised how little I have been able to find in Antique stores. A couple of weeks ago my wife and I went to five or six antique stores and I didn't find any thing. A few of the stores were big ones. Last week we went to the Brass Armadillo and I did find an Old Spice Mug and Brush, but that was all I could find and that is the biggest antique store I have ever been in!
