The Jaguar is filled with Deep Woods aftershave, and only 2 of the samples specifically state that they are aftershave, the Spicy and the Original.

Superb, Mark! I LOVE the Jag and the Cord, which I haven't found yet (and any time you find 7oz of Tai Winds is a good day). I'm also still hunting for the Arctic King (one of the best-looking decanters IMO), and the "Avon Calling" phone. I'd love to find that DW shower soap also. Those demonstrators will give you the chance to sample some of the great hard-to-find fragrances (Bay Rum, Island Lime, and Original). Splendid haul!

I found this Bay Rum Jug on a recent trip. It only has about an ounce or less left, but it is the first Avon Bay Rum I have ever found or tried.

Beautiful, I have been looking for one of these for the past year, hoping to pick it up locally as opposed to paying the shipping surcharge from buying online. My grandfather had a bottle of this in his bathroom, my cousin and I would take a whiff of it every Christmas get together.

[QUOTE=TheVez2;3410155]I have another awesome score to share. I found a bunch of Avon at an antique store in Las Vegas on my last trip all marked $3. However I was only traveling with carry on, so I passed. I went back last week prepared. They were marked down to $2!!! So I got as many as I thought I could safely pack in my checked bag: 16 in all. I passed on many others (but those mainly all had Wild Country). Most of what I got has Spicy and Tai Winds. Got back to the airport and found that 1 bottle had leaked slightly (I forgot to double check the caps when I packed), but none were broken. Score 1 for TSA and baggage handlers.

Nice chess pieces... I remember my mom would always get the avon aftershaves, I remember a great number of those shown... I'm also pretty sure she eventuall got entire chess set and it would be tucked away somewhere, along with probably another 25 bottles of various designs.
I don't think my dad used many of them, so they should all be NIB.

As I found out today, a bit of planning is called for if you intend to use Avon that is in one of the automobile bottles. I held the car in one hand, poured some into my other hand, and then discovered that in order to set the bottle down, I would have to put the cap back on, or else the contents would pour out of the car. When you have an open car in one hand, and aftershave in the other, a problem presents itself. Be sure you have something to prop up the car before you start.

Actually, most if not all, of the bottles were designed to have a resting position while open. Some of the cars stand up on the grill, so the open end sticks straight up. Some lay at an angle. Some have a plastic end cap that comes off and that becomes part of a base to set it on.
If you have the box for the bottle in question, it will show you, inside the flaps, exactly how you are supposed to set the bottle down while open.

Yep. All of the cars I have will set on the grill or at an angle.

Well, I didn't investigate it too much. I'm new to the automobile bottle. The Cord doesn't look like it will stand up straight, though I guess it would sit at an angle if I put the roof side down.

Avon DID design most of the decanters to stand up properly, but NOT ALL. Some of the smaller cars like the "Ferrari 53" and the "Corvette Stingray '65" require the one-handed application trick, and the "Blunderbuss Pistol 1780" and the "Dueling Pistol 1760" will absolutely not stand up either.

Nice deal, U-L! I really dig those AS/Talc combo decanters. I've got "The Red Sentinel" firetruck in Wild Country, the "Big Rig" tanker in Deep Woods, and the "Cement Mixer" in Everest.
I didn't find any Avon (or anything else, really) at this month's antique show near my home, so I scratched my itchy trigger finger at a Turkish Barber and Turkish market in Alpharetta instead.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to post all these great pics. What a blast looking at them. Very timely too, I'm about to take a road trip with the wife into Vermont and beyond for the fall colors this week. Now when I pass an antique shop that my wife says I have to turn around for I'll till say "your going to make me turn around?" like it's for her but it will be for me too.

I scored a vintage Avon shaving brush last week on the Bay.It arrived today, as it is my birthday it is a little gift to myself. It was part of the Gentlemans Regiment set from the 80's.In very good shape.Just cleaned/disinfected it and getting ready to give it a try.The bristles seem fairly stiff. But we'll see.

Just gave it a try.The brush did a good job,not as soft as my old burma-shave brush but much better than my diane brush(which is like using a paint brush). But the long handle is nice, makes use of the lather cup easier than chubby brushes.I wonder why they are not more popular?

I have one of those Avon brushes. I used it a few times, but the small knot didn't seem to be very good quality (they were made in China). I also acquired a vintage Franklin Barbershop boar brush recently, Austrian-made with a long wood-and-rubber handle. It's a bit more substantial than the Avon brush, and looks pretty promising. It's part of a NOS set with a mug and soap in a shoebox-sized container, and I haven't broken into it yet (I have a Barbershop soap/mug in rotation already). But one day....

Gentlemen, I hit the mother load. I went to an estate sale this morning and there was a ROOM full of vintage avon cologne and aftershave. It was the estate of a former Avon rep, and there was a bedroom with women's stuff, and then a bedroom full of men's stuff. The cool part was that it all NEW IN BOX. Most of the boxes were labeled 3-5 bucks, but I picked up a couple that would fit in my medicine cabinet. I picked up a spark plug full of wild country, and a horseshoe full of spicy. Other scents that were there that I remember:
Leather
Windjammer
Tai Winds
Deep Woods
Tribute
Wild Country
Spicy
Oland (I think)
I'm thinking about going back on Sunday and trying to pick up a few more when they're desperate to get rid of them. There were AT least 150 new in box bottles in all varieties of decanters. Unfortunately I didn't find Bay Rum or Island Lime.

Got my Avon stuff from the Bay on Friday.Unfortunately one of the bottles was broken during shipment so I had a very aromatic shipping box w/a note attached--Received Damaged.
Here was the shipment:Everest cologne,gear shifter decanter-Broken
Leather a/s,capitol bldg-2/3 full
Leather a/s,cowboy boot-full
Windjammer a/s,seltzer bottle-1/3 full
Bravo a/s,potbelly stove-only a few drops
Everest a/s,53 Buick Skylark-full
Lemon friction lotion, yellow apothecary bottle 2/3 full
I hate that the shifter was broken(thanks postal guys) but I already have a bottle of Everest cologne,I wish the Bravo had more in it there is not really enough to make a judgement on it.The Leather is good ,heavier than English Leather but not as sweet. In fact I think I may wear it today when I go to work. The Lemon lotion is a womans product, splash type.
Not bad for a dollar a bottle and 6 dollars total shipping.

The note was from the local Post office,so it was evidently broken in transit.I seriously doubt that the seller wrapped paper around shards of glass.lol. The box was discolored where the liquid had soaked and evaporated. This was on the top of the box,the broken bottle was on the bottom corner edge of the box.So apparently the package was handled somewhat roughly, probably dropped on that corner and then flipped upside down, explaining the staining.Probably due to automated equipment or not being well secured in a trailer/truck.

Urr-lord, You might want to double-check that Cowboy Boot; mine has Leather COLOGNE. The Lemon Velvet friction lotion also makes a pretty good AS/hair tonic; I find the powdery lemon scent is not particularly feminine. Too bad about the breakage, but at least you've got more Everest to sample! The Bravo is another smokey-dark-cologney scent similar to Oland, and I read somewhere that it's comparable to Tabac. Nice haul!

Love the horn too! I traded with KJ to get one mostly full of Blue Blazer AS (which is kind of a funky scent similar to Pinaud SR). The Avon Original AS is a clear winner, though, with a good menthol hit and a light woodsy scent. Congrats, Top!

Last week I had put in a one dollar bid on a wild Turkey decanter of Deep Woods Cologne.I already have two decanters of Deep Woods after shave so I wanted a cologne to layer it with.Well I won the bid and with shipping it was less than five dollars.Well the package arrived today and there were two interesting things about it.
1-the decanter was wedged into a small box with no packing material and arrived intact as opposed to my package last week that was well packaged and suffered breakage.
2-the decanter was filled with Deep Woods AFTER SHAVE.
So now I have THREE bottles of DW a/s,which is a pleasant enough scent (not a Polo green scent as many say it is)but which fades 95% away in minutes.Instead of the cologne which I wanted.
Now my dilemma is:I have not left feedback on the transaction yet.The price was amazing, the care in shipping was lackluster and the items description identified it wrongly twice.Maybe the seller does not know the difference between cologne and a/s.
Do I give a neutral rating?I don't feel comfortable giving a negative since it was a great value.I don't feel a positive is deserved since the item was not correct. I don't have a lot of experience on the Bay with improper items.Any feedback people?

I wouldn't "grouse" too much over a buck, myself. Just stay on the lookout for a Canadian Goose, which was a common decanter for the DW cologne. I've got one, and it layers very nicely to extend the scent. The DW talc is nice too... I might have to go for the trifecta soon. :001_smile

I was just disappointed, not sure if I had been gulled or rooked. Is the DW cologne hard to find?Should I pigeon hole this into that compartment labelled "hard to find in the wild".I would not think so since I was the only bidder.Seems like if it was really rare more bidders would have flocked to it. Maybe there should have been droves.
I will keep an eagle eye out for the talc and cologne in the future.
I'm sorry I can't do this any more,must go get coffee.lol.

I doubt the seller knows the difference between a cologne and an A/S... My mom called everything of my dad's an "aftershave", didn't matter if it was a cologne or an aftershave. I don't find it that far of a stretch to think the opposite could happen.
Personally, I'd send a note to the seller, inform them that the product was listed wrong "for their information". You might even give them positive feedback if everything else was OK, but in the feedback section mention it was X instead of Y, at least that way a future buyer will think to ask.

As far as the packing goes, I've gotten seen just about every kind of packing you can imagine. Some of these folks imagine that boxes are gently hand carried from cart to truck instead of what postal folks actually do: throw. I've gotten to the point that when it comes to fragile items, I will include a note to the seller that I have received similar things via USPS broken and please please pack carefully. But careful of making demands when the deal only results in the seller making a couple of bucks. I honestly don't see the point of selling or buying Avon off of ebay. It's every where out in the wild.

Well, I went back to the estate sale today and came home with more than I bargained for. Sadly, I will probably go back Sunday and see what I can scrape together for a low ball offer. Unfortunately, I forgot to take my digital camera, and since I have a dumbphone, I can't upload pictures. If I go back Sunday I will try to get a few shots of what they have left.

tai Winds in The King chess piece decanter
I also saw several bottles of Oland, Everest, and Tribute, among the probably hundred bottles of Wild Country. Are they any good?
Also,

You did very, very well, Jones! Several of those decanters are missing in my collection. And that keepsake Bay Rum bottle is a real treasure, from the reissue in 1981, I believe.
Öland is a complex and interesting scent: dark, sweet, smoky, leathery
Everest is a clean, sweet and fresh piney scent with a touch of menthol
Tribute is a cologney lavender top with the typical Avon sweet-woods-musk base
Wild Country is the flagship fragrance, a floral-citrus top on the standard base, in the same wheelhouse with Clubman, Stetson, Brut, and Canoe. The vintage stuff is much more robust than the current version. It's a must-have in anyone's Avon collection.

Wild Country thrift store finds yesterday. I picked these items up; the old-fashioned radio is intact and full- 5 oz., the half of the old-fashioned telephone is full- 7-oz., the thermometer, missing finial, is about 1/4 full. And, the shaving mug was with the other mugs at 29 cents; grand total $6.20. I will probably use the radio bottle and just transfer the juice from the others, as needed. Where does one get a little funnel for doing this?

BTW, we went yesterday and I cleaned out everything cheap to be had. Spotted just a few Avon collectibles and no Old Spice. Well over a 1000 spaces (indoors of course) and zilch on colognes or aftershaves.

What I did is pour the liquid into a small glass & then use a small syringe without the needle to put it into the new container. I went to the local drug store & asked the pharmasist for a large eye dropper like you would use to give a baby cough syrup.

Finally located one of these bottles at a local antique mall. It was empty, but I was still happy to find it as I have memories of my paternal grandfather having a bottle of it back in the 60's. Now I have to find some bay rum aftershave to decant into it. I was thinking of using one of those flavor injectors used to inject marinades and spices into meat.

Christmas morning 1969, my first bottle of aftershave, Avon Excaliber in a snoopy dog bottle. I was twelve, and didn't start shaving for a couple more years (Irish heritage, not mediterranean).
http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff24/normbalog/Xmas1970AmyLaurelleNorm.jpg
The bottle disappeared decades ago, probably didn't even use all the AS. Don't know if it burned up in one of my mom's house fires or in a yard sale.
This photo survived one of the fires though, and I got to wondering about the Avon bottle a few weeks ago. I found one online for a few bucks plus postage. It's about half full of AS too. SWMBO likes the smell (but hates Tabac, go figure).

BTW, considering that the Avon ladies were pitching their wares to the lady of the house, who selected the scents they wanted to smell on their men, it's no surprise at all that Avon appeals to the fairer sex. My wife adores all of them (even the ones that seem a little iffy to me).

To all vintage Avon collectors in central Illinois and Indiana: There is a resale shop in Tilton, IL (south end of Danville) on Illinois Hwy 1 in an old brick school house that has a large cabinet of Avon bottles for $1 each. Most are empty but some are not. I was there today and saw a very large selection of 70's and 80's bottles, mostly men's aftershave but also ladies' cologne bottles. Included were the much discussed shave brush bottle in the box (but empty) and several rarer pieces including the Coleman lantern and the AMF bowling pin. Lots of car shaped bottles (mostly empty).
The store was asking for only $1 each so it may be worth the while for a short drive if you want to expand your collection.

Been awhile since I found any that was worth picking up but I ran across these yesterday at a little antique store that I've never been to before. $2 each and all are 100% full. I didn't have much cash with me so these are the only ones I got, but am planning a second trip back with a bit more money since there's a couple others I want.
From L-R 1902 Haynes Apperson with Blend 7 AS, DE Super Shaver with Sure Winner Bracing AS, Packard with Leather Cologne and a Cadillac with Excalibur AS.
This is the second DE decanter I have found, the other was boxed, and my second Haynes-Apperson with Blend 7, which is an outstanding scent.

Good show, Tom (as usual)! I'm a big fan of Blend 7 also. I used the Sure Winner Bracing Lotion as an AS just once, and wasn't sure how I felt about it. Not much scent as I recall, and it seemed to be a stronger astringent. I think it's intended to be a body rub, but if so, it'd be strange to put it in the "Super Shaver" decanter, eh? I'll be giving it another try one of these days.
I visited my usual haunts yesterday, but only found overpriced and unboxed duplicates, so nothing came home with me. I may have to follow your cue and explore some new territory next weekend.

I did not have any Clint or Blend 7 in my stash.Just as a quick observation: Clint-a sharp ,sweet leather.Blend 7- a softer British Sterling with a woody note. Also the Oland from this batch is much lighter in scent and complexity than the other 2 bottles that I have.Oland seems to have a reputation for varying scent.
This batch came from a guy who was selling stuff out of his 80 yr old aunts basement. She sold avon in the 60's and 70's.Apparently this was the last of it.

So, with another birthday coming up, the wifey asked me to do a little eBay shopping for myself. I haven't had much luck at local hunting of any collectible novelty decanters recently, but I took the opportunity to get some discontinued Avon things that caught my eye:
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/8623/avonvintage2012030501.jpg
Here we have:
Lover Boy AS 3oz NIB - In the bottle it's a bright and nearly pure leather, no powder, maybe w/a hint of sweet citrus
Far Away for Men AS 3.4oz NIB - Mostly lavender with citrus and light florals, nice bottle
Jamoca Musk for Men Cologne 2.8oz NIB - As expected, it's musk, cocoa and coffee, I've been badly wanting some of this
Brisk Spice AS 4.5oz NIB - Up to now, I've only had one small example of this great mentholated OS knockoff
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/1127/avonvintage2012030502.jpg
I've been searching for more of the fantastic Gentlemen's Regiment shaving soap, and finally found this slightly-discolored puck in a complete boxed set! The AS decanter is empty but smells like Spicy. The refillable talc is full and labeled Black Suede, but the fragrance is light-to-nonexistent. And now I've got a backup mug and brush for my existing pieces.
Quite the satisfying haul!

Found these at a flea market. They had several that I already have but these are two I've never seen before. The Casey's Lantern is maybe 1/3 full of Leather AS and the Golden Rocket 0-2-2 is completely full of Tai Winds AS. The finish on the lantern is kind of worn, the steam engine is in really great shape.

Wow, looking through these posts, about every third page actually, I recognize a goodly portion of these bottles. Some I actually had at one point as a kid. My Mom was buds with an Avon rep. The long low Cadillac for one. What's strange is I can't recall the fragrance at all. Obviously I wish I would have kept some of them. But, too many moves and too long ago, sigh. Speaking of birth quarters, been thinking of getting me a TTO or something reasonable in a C-1, just for THOI.

That's a pretty good one, UL, if not an absolute standout. I get citrus (lavender?), wood, and spice from it. Similar to Tribute, for sure. It might be a Yardley knockoff, certainly the name suggests that. It's mild compared to Clint or Öland, though, and doesn't have the dry leather of the former or the smoky/dirty vibe of the latter, for me.

I haven't been looking TOO hard lately, but still, it's been a while since I saw anything worth collecting. But this time my regular new-product Avon lady at the monthly antique show actually found some vintage items to sell me. $30 for the lot, all full:
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/6192/avonvintage20120505.jpg
Musk Marine 3.4oz Cologne Spray (current product, bought to complete the set of hair/body wash, ASC and deodorant I already have)
"No Cause for Alarm" 4oz Tai Winds AS
"'31 Greyhound" 5oz Everest AS
"Pipe Decanter" 2oz Spicy AS
"Abraham Lincoln" 6oz Tai Winds AS
"Sterling Six II" 7oz Tai Winds AS
"Sure Winner Racing Car" 5.5oz Spicy AS
The oddball: Lantern Decanter, 6oz Shulton Old Spice AS! It's a bit hard to find around these parts. I've been looking for many moons, but this is only the second time I've found any of the old juice in the wild, and the first time I've gotten a full one. Made my day!

Oland has to rank tops as one of the strangest smelling Aftershaves/ Colognes I have run across. It's total smoky weirdness.
It might be out ranked by Tom Ford Amber Absolute though; for the simple fact that I am mystified as to why anyone would pay $100's of dollars per bottle for something that to me smells like freshly sawed 2x4's. lol.

OK, this is getting fun now. Yesterday evening found two more at local thrift stores. The Whale Oil Lamp is full up to the top row of beads, 85-90% I'd guess, with Wild Country and you can see the level of Oland in the chess piece. Not really sure I care for the Oland scent but for $1 I couldn't pass it up. The Wild Country was setting with several empty Avon decanters priced at $1.49, not really sure why it was only 69 cents.
Oh man I remember buying some Wild Country from a woman who sold Avon part time at my job. That stuff was nasty, but your bottle looks very nice though.

All the vintage Avon aftershaves contain good ol' glycerin, and are great performers in my book. Wild Country is their oldest continuously-produced scent, and is one of only two splashes they produce today. It's frequently likened to the scent of Pinaud Clubman, but it's got more of a Stetson feel for me: a floral and citrus top with a sweet woodsy musk base.
I have enough in reserve to fuel my generator in case of an extended blackout. One needs light for shaving, after all. :001_smile

07-20-2012, 07:06 PM
So, aside from the decanters, what do you guys think of the performance and scent of Wild Country AS? I know a place that sells the old avon stuff....some with the Wild Country still in it.
Wild Country smells a lot like Clubman, and Dana's Canoe. The vintage is a lot more potent than the current Avon product. The current Avon product while a great scent is not as rich smelling as the original. If you can get vintage Wild Country for a good price, by all means pick it up. Just test it out first: adverse storage conditions can cause a fragrance to turn, resulting in some really disgusting juice!!

I've gotten to where I won't give more than $2-4 for Avon bottles that are full. I know I can find them for that price or less, so I've learned to be patient and leave higher priced bottles where they are. I reckon a few pictures with the cap off could be great to see how they look without them. Most, if not all, of the Avon bottles have a regular cap, with a removable decorative piece that fits on the cap.

Wow! I can't believe I was the last person who replied to this thread over a month ago. Guess it was time for a bump and a pic of my current Avon collection. Enjoy!271790
When I started off shaving Wild Country was my AS of choice, and I had all the bottles in your collection. Makes me nostalgic for Wild Country now!

What mmack66 said. They all have aftershave in them, though I've refilled some with scents of my own choosing, as they were empty when I found them. I've even taken a couple on road trips with no leaking issues.

This is another great thread here. Some amazing pictures. My mom used to sell Avon, but has nothing left at home. I'll be on the lookout for some of these at antique/thrift shops.

Right, if I have a look at the cars, as an example, where's the cap? When opened, do you need to hold the decanter until you put the cap back on?

No, they were designed to stand upright without the cap on. The boxes even have illustrations on how to set them down.

Not everything stands up. The Jaguar doesn't, and the Cord doesn't either. I prop the bottle up on the cap while I apply the aftershave.

Ah, OK. All of the cars I have do, but I don't have them all. I even have a rhino that stands on his backside.
I guess then the Jaguar and Cord could be classified as having a disadvantage then...

Here's the latest I found. Whale Oil Lantern NOS full of Tai Winds, which is a very nice scent. Not bad for a buck!

278577278578278579Picked these up at a flea market a week ago. Sadly other than the Avon Leather and Oland (in the Stutz) they have gone bad. I had a bad cold last week and my smeller wasnt working to well but at a $1.00 each I feel ok getting the leather and Oland. Also, I recently received some Tai Winds (ebay) that is good and will post a pic of it later on.

278581278582Two slightly different angles but only have the one decanter. The Tai Winds scent is familiar and very nice. Similar to Brut maybe but not quite?

My mom used to sell Avon when I was a kid. I remember some of these in my house she used as demonstrators. Nice to see.

Nice find! This was the first Avon bottle I got when I started collecting. Mine was empty, but I got it for free at a garage sale. The lady threw it in with some other stuff I was buying. She was surprised I wanted it. That's ok, though, because I refilled it with Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum after I got home.

Nice bottle! Do you need to take the top off and then unscrew the cap to get the aftershave or once the cap is on, it's clipped?

The cap should unscrew with the top attached, at least the ones I have do.

I like that one Tom. My sister started selling Avon door to door and was a district manager when she passed away. I thought I had seen all the Avon there was but im always seeing something ive not seen before. Your lantern is new to me.

Ugh... I just got back from a lunch-break antique mall search, and I found a BUNCH of these going for about $6 each. Mostly wild country, but I did find a few spicy, deep woods, and one oland. I didn't buy any (this time), but I think I'm going to bring cash next time. I'd do too much damage if I had my bank card with me...
I feel AASAD starting to rumble around in my soul...

$6? Are they still in the box? Even then, I'm thinking you should pick them up for $3 per, but that is just me. I see them all of the time at flea markets and estate sales and the only time I spent more then $3 (that I recall!) is for my Futura.

Now that I paid $6 for.

I found many bottles of old Avon AS at a local antique mall yesterday. I only opened the Tai Winds and did not care for that at all. I'll have to back and smell the rest. I did see Wild country, Everest, Deep Woods, and a few others.

My son said the Tai Winds I have smells like Jade East. Its one of the few in my recent finds that didnt smell a bit "off".

I'll have to pick up a bottle or two next time I'm by that place. They want $4 per bottle and most bottles are half to near full.

I just picked up a few more pieces, nothing too special. A stagecoach with oland and a car with tai winds, both for $1 ea. No pics sorry.
One of these days after I move, I will unpack everything and take pics. I just reorganized my boxes by scent. I have essentially 6 computer paper boxes full of Avon bottles. One box it full of empties, the rest of the boxes have decanters that are full or near full.
