Merkur HD v. DE89

These two razors seem to go head to head. Has anybody used both?
I've never used the HD, but I've owned the DE89 for a short time.
Has anybody done a comparison on these?

Yes, these are similar razors. From what I've read in other posts, the general consensus is that the Merk HD is a touch more aggressive than the EJ / Muhle razors, but not by much.

The HD and the DE86 are my two most used razors.

I have both and for me there is no contest. Putting the lower Merkur quality issues aside, the EJ definitely gives me a smoother shave. The finish on the EJ has to be the best around. And at a lower price too! Enough said.

I have both and will keep using both.

EJ89 is less money and is prettier. It seems to be the fad razor right now.

Merkur HD shaves at least as well and has a beefier, knurled handle.

My first new DE was a Merkur HD; I found it a very competent razor, and rate it very highly.

I do, however, prefer the shave from my Muhle R109 (same head as the EJ89) :smile:

The fit and finish of the Muhle are better too.

I use both and find that the more aggressive HD shaves better. (At least for me.)

haven't tried the EJ but i do have the HD and i can honestly say that i havent really had the urge for buying razors at this time..of course being broke doesnt help that out either but im content with the HD. ive only had it since xmas but the shaves have been absolutley fantastic with just about every blade ive tried it with. and i say almost because the blades i didnt like i dont think id like in any razor they were so rough.

I have both razors. Like the handle of the HD, like the shave quality of the EJ. However, I can get great shaves out of both, and would be hard pressed to say which is the best for me. Heck, once you have SAD, you have to have both anyway.

I have both. I got the EJ for Christmas and haven't even picked up the HD since.

The Merkur HD is a well built razor that has given me DFS.

On the other hand, any Muhle or EJ with a Muhle head has given me DFS but just smoother.

The Muhle / EJ razors are a notch above Merkurs IMHO.
