Does anyone find that the Progress is aggressive even on 1? The one I had felt more so than my HD. I am thinking of getting another one.

I'm thinking the head was installed backwards and therefore your "1" was really a "5+".

I agree. Not to say you didn't get a defective Progress, but mine set at one is pretty mild.

is the mark on the head on the same side and the triangle on the blade table?

The only thing that happens when you insert the cap backwards is the dial doesn't line up correctly, it has no effect on the exposure or aggressiveness. I have tested this on my Progress. When i put the cap on backwards the dial lines up 180 degrees from where its supposed to be, but the aggressiveness and exposure remain the same.

The Progress requires a different angle than most razors since the blade is bent so much more, try a lower angle and it wont be so aggressive.

Can you have a head installed backwards on the Progress? Could you explain a little more for me please?

Its the way the head is threaded, the notch is there just because when you put the head in with the notches lining up the dial comes close to 1. If you put the head in the opposite way the dial will be lined up close to 5.

Even though the dial would line up with 5 the head would still be fully screwed in, its just that the dial would read wrong. The head for the Progress and Merkur HD are the same head, the only reason there is no notch in the HD is because there is no adjustment dial, so it doesn't matter which way you put it in.

See above...was explained by Silverkarn. This occurs when the mark on the cap and the triangle on the blade table are not lined up (same side).

That's why I am thinking that by the time he rolled back around the 1, the razor head was probably loosened and this created wayyy too much blade gap (and possibly a loose blade).

There are two markings on the Progress. The following picture is of my Mergress which Eric has painted the two markings so I can easily see it. This is the way you should have the head installed.

One other thing. When I had my first Progress (not the XL one) when I tightened the blade all the way it went substantially past 1. As a result, the 1 on this razor was closer to a 2+ on another Progress. However, when the Progress was modified this issue disappeared.

That doesn't make any difference if it's tighten all the way down.
The head orientation on affect the dial readings, if you install the head incorrectly the dial will read 180 degrees off.

I have and HD and two Progress razors. I think on 1, (tightened all the way) the Progress is a little milder. I would guess the Progress between 2 and 3 would be comparable to the HD.

I set mine at 4 and it's perfect.
