I recently got in to dip and I'm enjoying. It's cheap, there are so many kinds, it doesn't make you smell, and it doesn't affect breathing like smoking. I didn't really see a dip specific thread so I decided to start one.

I've had several Skoal, Copenhagen, and Grizzly varieties so far. If I had to pick a favorite I think I'd have to say it's the straight or natural. I do sometimes want some flavor so I might do a wintergreen. I've tried some of the fruit flavors but I tend to like the saltiness of tobacco vs. the sweet. Some of the flavors just taste so artificial. Any other dippers out there?

Mike,

I am a lifelong Copenhagen user. Here is what I advise: run like hell. It is highly addictive, expensive, unattractive to the opposite sex, gives you bad breath, and will chew you up and spit you out. Not to mention the health implications. I can't stress this enough, smokeless tobacco is HIGHLY addictive. And at $5 a can, it is not cheap. Don't do it to yourself, man. If I could go back, I never would have started.

I quit dipping about 3 months ago and have not looked back. It can be very tasty, but the negatives out weigh the positives by a mile. Of course you are grown and have to make your own decision but I would reconsider if I were you.

Dip is my main source of tobacco, unlike pipes and cigars, it is an addiction. I've used it since I was 11 years old. The amount of nicotene in snuff is far greater than even cigarettes. It is extremely hard to quit. I would take Dustinls' advice and find something else to do. Having said that, Grizzly natural fine cut is my poison of choice, I don't care for flavors. Considering this a subforum for tobacco, I don't want to come across as hypocrite. If it's something you enjoy, have at it. You may want to check out the swedish snus, it has a lower nicotene content and comes in a variety of natural styles. Alot of them are available in pouch form, so you don't have it all in your teeth.

Likewise. I hope I haven't come across as that considering I smoke cigars and pipes. I'm just suggesting that the hardship of getting addicted to a substance outweighs the enjoyment of it. You enjoy dipping, sure. But can you quit? That is a question I ask myself daily. Willpower you say? Easier said than done. It's just not worth it.

I appreciate the words of warning. I'm taking it slow. I work in a place where no tobacco of any kind is allowed. I have a dip on the way to work and on the way home. Wife hates spit so I wouldn't dare do it around her. It's a once in a while kind of thing.

That said, I did try snus because of not having to spit and it was very unexciting. Very little flavor and it just sat there. Seems like a product for people who don't want to "go all the way" and dip or chew.

Thank you for taking my initial post so gracefully. Mike, I understand the enjoyment you speak of. Whenever I am outside doing something like splitting firewood or yardwork, I enjoy dipping. But the reality of it is, I have to have a dip in my mouth when I do anything. So I can honestly say that I no longer do it out of enjoyment, but rather to satisfy my nicotine addiction.

Same here, for guys addicted, your post feels like someone asking "Hey, I'm really liking cigarettes, do you recommend menthol or straight, Marlboro or Camel?" So don't feel like we're beating up on you, just be aware.

I can see how that would be a concern. I do it twice a day during the week and not at all on the weekend because the ol' ball and chain is around. I have to say I do look forward to it, but I don't shake or anything or NEED it.

I smoked socially for 4 years and just stopped one day because I felt like it was affecting my breathing during exercise. Hopefully the same would be so if I decided I needed to stop dipping.

I was a dipper for over 8 years. Always had a dip in my mouth. I quit cold turkey one day and stopped using for about 2 years. Then I picked it back up but only did it when I was doing yard work, fishing, or golfing, so mainly in the summer. I am a Skoal man, but have recently found the joy of Snus! It seems to be a little more social acceptable and a lot easier to hide from your wife...if you need to do such things...

Oh I have to disagree.
I like it b/c I dont have to constantly adjust the dip in my mouth, spit, wonder if it is in my teeth...etc. I find it has the same "kick" as any other product. I think it is for people who want to be able to get their nicotine wherever they want to and not worry about how socially unacceptable dip is.
With all that being said...Listen to Dustin and put down the can! Run, don't want, away as fast as you can!

I honestly don't think I do it for the nicotine. It's fun to have a wad in my mouth (LOL) and I like the tobacco saltyness of it. When I smoked cigs I just did it because I was bored. When I think back to those years I wonder what I was thinking. They make clothing and everything smell, made breathing when expending energy more challenging, and it's not like a good cigar or pipe that you actually sit back and savor. I think that's why I just stopped one day and never looked back.

Oh, I remember those days too my friend!
Then one day you are driving down the road and you reach for your can of snuff and it EMPTY!
"Oh, I will be O.K. I will wait until I need Gas to grab a can." you think.
"It is not like I NEED this"
Then the next thing you know you are in a gas station with a Log and a Starbucks Capachino drink not because you are thirsty, but because you can down it in 2 sips and their bottles make the best spitters...then it hits you...I NEED this! :001_smile

I dip also, started with Copenhagen Snuff, then Snus which became too expensive. Now I use Redman Snuff, three days a week only while at work. It's half the price of Cope and the flavor lasts much longer and the nitrosamines are much lower. I recommend chewing gum or brushing your teeth after a dip also which helps with the breath thing and gum care.

What kind of snus did you try? I both dip and snus (on rare occasion, I try not to develop habbits), and although the snus isn't as intense as dip, I still really enjoy it when I do. I recommend trying CAMEL Snus in the "Frost" blend, all the other Camel blends are pretty gross IMO. Don't give up on snus yet, it's a great dip substitute...especially at work.

When I dip, I choose SKOAL. Either straight or peach. I know you don't care for sweet, but I think the peach still really retains the saltiness and true tobacco flavor. In either case it doesn't sound like you are using too often, which is probably a good idea. Enjoy it when you do.

I actually blast my mouth with Listerine afterwards. I can't stand when people talk to me and they're ripping my face off with their horrendous breath. I'm pretty cognizant of my oral aroma.

I've tried pretty much all the Camel ones (which I know snus connoiseurs don't even consider snus) and they weren't offensive, they just didn't do anything for me. Aside from a very small tingle for about 30 seconds I just didn't get anything out of it. No buzz, no nothin'.

Haven't had a dip (or chew, which I liked more) since I got married. If I were single, I would without a doubt still do it. I love the flavor of tobacco. I will admit, it was really tough to quit. I'm a cigar and pipe smoker but I do that much less frequently and the nicotine doesn't leave me craving. I can go weeks with a cigar and I don't even notice. The Copenhagen dip or Lancaster chewing tobacco on the other hand, I craved that stuff bad.

My wife is supportive of my love for tobacco and didn't make me quit. I did it out of my own self conciousness because well, let's face it, it's not the most attractive way of using tobacco.

I'd try products from the General & Swedish Match brands. Likely, most of what you'll see in the US are part of these companys. Also, Skruf is one of personal favs too.

Seeing how you like the nicotine buzz, look for ones with 'Extra Stark' written on them, translates to extra strong. I know General and Skruf come in these varieties (pouch). For loose snus, nothing beats Ettan. They are the original and still the best IMHO. General is also popular lös snus. For a real light, delicate snus, I like the Göteburg Rape White pouches.

You are right about snus not being as powerful as dip. But, the swedish gov't did a 30 year comprehensive test with snus users and came out with no negative side effects. Something dip just can't claim... gotta love the Grizz though, tears your ass up if you turn your back on it.

I keep a fresh bottle of water on my night stand for drinking during the night in case if I wake up thirsty. I also read while in bed. When I start falling asleep, I'll wake up and spit my snuff out into a plastic spit bottle, rinse my mouth, set the spit bottle ON THE FLOOR next to my nightstand, turn out my reading light and go to sleep. One night I forgot to put the spit bottle on the floor and instead put it on my nightstand next to my water bottle.

It is shredded tobacco leaf with flavoring (called "casing" if I remember right) added. Chewing tobacco runs the gamut from syrupy sweet, to various flavored varieties, to relatively dry straight type products.

For a nice variety I'd suggest my two favorites: Mail Pouch is pretty dry, light on the casing, just a straight chew. Original Red Man, on the other hand, is pretty heavily cased and sweet. A few years ago Red Man started making a low-sugar variety called Silver Blend if I remember correctly, that was sort of in between on the casing. It was very nice, if they still make it. Another cased brand that is not quite as sweet as Red Man is Levi Garret, and it is a very good chew as well.

Edited to add: you put a wad in your mouth and can chew on it a little, or mainly just suck on the juice. You most definitely will need to spit.

I thought supporting Jeff Gordon disqualifies you as a redkneck or a hick.

I fondly remember my Army days in the field (in peacetime…but we ‘played’ for real with noise & light disciple of course), on road marches and combat zones, because smoking a cigarette or cigar could be very hazardous to ones health (especially in combat at night), when a lite match (you can forget smoking underneath a poncho and/or tents....that's just for the movies), could draw a ‘bead’ on your forehead from enemy snipers :a41: and opps…OMG...you’re being ‘zipped-up’ in a body bag :a47:

So, instead we chewed tobacco but, my favorite was Redman Plug. The flavor was mild and sweet and there was a fresh tobacco aroma that reminded me of a newly opened pack of Kools. This aroma carried over to the flavor of the Plug with hints of molasses and a touch of sugary sweetness. Not over powering in any sense and it produced little spit for me (and saved on my water consumption too).

Is that the stuff youhave to cut with a knife? How do you use it?

I was at 7-11 this morning getting coffee and I busted out a Skoal peach. I felt like a girl in high school but I like to try things before I condemn them. Definitely better than the Skoal citrus but as far as flavors go not as good as the apple.

Yes, it's hard to tell when someone's being funny when it's all typed. I changed it in case it actually sounds "hatey" to anyone.

Plugs are pressed shredded tobacco, usually with a good amount of casing. Think a concentrated form of chewing tobacco. A little goes a pretty long way. If you are feeling dainty you could try cutting a chunk off one with your pocket knife, but you might gunk up your knife blade. I always just did it the old fashioned way and nibbled off a small bite with my teeth. Plugs are not meant to be shared with others. :tongue_sm

Plugs are very nice if you are into chewing, definitely worth trying out. I never tried the Red Man plug but there are some others that are great: Days' Work, Cannonball, and Apple (don't know if Apple is still made though). There are probably others as well.

Another interesting form of chewing tobacco, and probably the oldest form, is the twist. These are worth trying as well but I don't know if they are widely available outside of Tennessee and Kentucky, where most of them are made. One of the neat things about twists is that they are usually drier and less cased than other forms of chewing tobacco, and most can be smoked in a pipe (NOT for the faint of heart or nicotine sensitive).

DL

I recently quit using chewing tobacco. VERY ADDICTIVE INDEED.

I don't know what a pouch of chewing tobacco costs, but I hear it's around $7 a pouch. Ouch. I buy Copenhagen for $24.50 for five cans. I remember when chewing tobacco was cheaper than snuff.

Prices have really flip flopped around. I normally get Redman Snuff which is 2.66/can but occasionally grab a can of Cope which I can get for just under 5 bucks. 2 years ago it cost me around 7.

Completely agree. I was a Coppi long cut user for 10 years and most of that was in high school and college. Got to the point where I would just swallow the dip. I would have to hide it from girlfriends and even just friends because they would find it repulsive and I would buy them by the log so it got expensive. I quit but it wasn't easy.

They sure flipped. I remember a can was just about $4 for Coppi and a bag of Lancaster was around 8.

Wow, This thread really took off. Sorry I haven't been on sooner but I've had a bear of a week and ended up putting in a couple of all nighters. Glad to see you gentlemen didn't let it go sideways.

I used to chew before snus and always liked Stoker's moonshine or dark fired! I don't know if you can get more country than whole leaf chew 'baccy cured with pappy's corn squeezens, but I give it run with some good burly in a cob:001_cool:. I favor snus now as its neater and more discreet for those rare occasions when I when I have an long or stressful day in a smoke free environment, thats when the old cig cravings hit me, and the snus shoots 'em down.

Paid $18.75 CDN for 34 grams of Skoal Straight last night, and that's not an "out of line" price up here in The Great White North. Several years ago they started fiddling with the sizes and all you could buy was a smaller puck. It was less money, but when you did the math it was more expensive on a "per gram" basis. Now the small size has gone by the boards and we're back to the bigger 34g puck with yet another price hike. I don't bother keeping track of who's got their hand in my pocket when it comes to tobacco but I'm fairly certain that about $13.00 of what we pay here goes to the government.

Someone mentioned Apple plug earlier. Haven't seen it in years. It's a pity. I really liked that stuff. Beech Nut plug was always popular when I was younger but that, too, seems to be a thing of the past. It's a mean old world out there. Stock up on everything you like while you can, boys. It ain't gonna get cheaper.

Mike:
1. You could cut individual servings with a knife, but what we did was ...just bite off good amount directly from the plug.

2. Then place the chew in the 'cheek' (left or right side...whichever feels better), of your mouth.

3. Slowly move the chew around so that you can chew it, being very, very careful not to swallow any tabacco juice (bleh!!!) :tongue_sm

4. When you feel like you have a fairly good amount of spit worked into your chew, spit the juice out.

5. Keep working the chew until the flavor is gone.

6. Spit out the chewed tobacco and rinse with water or a drink and spit again to cleanse your mouth.

7. Just a little hint...once ya 'git the hang of it'...it's easy to move the chew from cheek to another using your tongue.

Chew is the heavy cased stuff
Dip/American Snuff is the moist stuff in a can that you put between your gum and mouth?

I quit dipping about 3 months ago and have not looked back. It can be very tasty, but the negatives out weigh the positives by a mile. Of course you are grown and have to make your own decision but I would reconsider if I were you.

I know LOTS of guys that dip. Not good. Dip is very messy and really, CHICS DON'T LIKE IT. I use Chew (Red Man Golden Blend) when Ill be in a position where I need to stay alert without sleep for awhile. I can only say good things about actual chew, but smokeless baccy is still habbit forming baccy. Dont let it.
Sides, its not a gentleman's habbit.
I noticed the other active bars and I remember that dip is RAMPANT in the services.

I was leaving this thread when the title of it caught my eye and reminded me of a funny story. So I live in Korea and Koreans are not big on chewing tobacco. Even though they all seem to smoke, the local brands are weak compared to US brands. I got a chance to work with some S. Korean military and since I hadn't slept for awhile I was chewing my RedMan. They expressed an interest in what I was doing. So I shared. HAHAHA! Ever seen "The Sandlot"? Ya, those poor boys didnt understand that they wern't supposed to swallow the leaf and spit. So they chewed it like gum for awhile and swallowed it. Poor fellows were all sick. And what was worse was that they kept sending their buddies over to me thinking it was funny and wouldn't warn their friends. So after awhile the entier group had Come, Swallowed, and Spewed. It was all in good fun. And they thought that us Americans had Iron guts. Since Kimchi makes my stomache churn, I cant exactly feel proud. Hope you guys like the story.
