View Full Version : Where do you get your ink?

I checked out all the office supply stores in the area and nobody had bottles of ink. I did find some 'artists' India Ink at an arts and crafts store but I don't think that would be used for writing, correct?

I'm guess that unless you live near a large city you're getting your supplies on the 'net so I'm asking, where do you get your ink?

While I'm at it, I wanted to get some nice stationery for writing notes and it seems like everything is designed for use in a laser or inkjet printer. Any leads on where to get some decent paper that doesn't look girly, which has the other problem I had when looking at the office superstores.

Thanks! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I like inks from The Foutain Pen Network.

I have also ordered ink from here:

I've been ordering ink and notebooks from Goulet Pen Co. (http://www.gouletpens.com/). They have amazing customer service, considering it's such a small a business, and the prices seem on par.
Personally, I go for the Rhodia or Clairefontaine notebooks for writing, but I'm sure there are some good options for proper writing stationery. As for ink, I'm a big fan of Noodler's, and have also had success with Diamine.

Like Austin, I have ordered from the two sites above. Well, actually, I went to FPH and bought two of their exclusive Noodler's Ink Colors, Ellis Island Blue and Blackest Manhattan Black.

If you like dark inks, you will probably like those.

You may also want to check out Goulet Pens Interactive Swab tool.

I'll throw in another vote for Goulet Pens. (http://www.gouletpens.com/) They are quite similar to many of the great vendors on B&B as far as service and speed. It's a husband and wife duo that runs the store out of Virginia. Their prices are reasonable (including shipping rates) and their selections of ink and paper are pretty decent.

Goulet is awesome, as is http://www.peartreepens.com. Great service from both, and both sites sell samples of ink, so you can try it before committing to a full bottle.

I've used Swisher Pens as posted above by Austin, and I also really like Montgomery Pens:

http://www.montgomerypens.com/index.asp

Sadly, green Parker Quink, the only ink my pens have ever known, is nearly impossible to find, so I'm glad I stocked up when I heard that it would be going away.

Thanks for the information about where to order so far! I jumped right in and ordered a couple of bottles over on the Fountain Pen Network and I'll see how that goes first.

1 bottle of FPN Van Gogh Starry Night Blue

1 bottle of FPN Galileo Manuscript Brown

Earlier this morning I ordered a fountain pen, some Noodler's ink and a Clairefontaine notebook from amazon.com. The ink and notebook are fulfilled by amazon so they were eligible for 2 day shipping as the order was over $25. The pen I have to wait on. I'm going to have to check some of the other sites mentioned here.

You can't leave us hanging like that! What kind of ink and pen?

I'll confess to ordering these Jinhao, two FP and two Rollerball:

I have the same downhere in Holland. Fortunately I am a small corporation and allowed to buy from a wholesale company for schools. They carry writing ink by the liter . But as a liter only costs me about 8 usd shipped, I am not complaining.

I feel the need to give a shout out to my home town, so http://www.fahrneyspens.com/ , a great brick and mortar store in DC that does a good mail order/on-line business and they do have Peliken Edelstein in stock, at least at the B&M store.

Also, there was a young couple at the DC Pen Show that had the best selection of inks I I saw there, who seemed very nice and had great prices. I will try to come up with the link for them. I hate to say that I do not usually remember to favor sites just because folks are nice and helpful, but I do in their case.

Amazon and EBay seem to be about as good for Noodlers as any place, if I recall. I suppose Noodlers is controversial among some folks.

Did we leave off www.jetpens.com ? They have Pilot Iroshizuku for $28 a bottle and $25 worth of stuff ships free, which is a deal!

I have to order all my ink since all I can find here is Parker Quink. Not bad, but there are better. I usually buy Private Reserve American Blue from ebay. Lowest price with shipping is where I get it from.

However, these places look to have a nicer selection and are recommended.

As for paper, I have yet to find a nice paper in a nice price range.
I've investigated Arches and Clariefontaine, but never bought any.
It's hard to do when you have a bunch of notepads and paper around that you want to use up first.

For my first fountain pen I got the Aurora Style (http://www.amazon.com/Aurora-Style-Paprika-Resin-Fountain/dp/B002FWS4XG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295143868&sr=8-1). I tried a friend's Aurora over the weekend and really liked it. For ink, I ordered Noodlers Blue-Black, although had I known about the Ellis Island Blue at FPH I would have ordered that instead. I was also considering Noodlers Legal Lapis ink, an exclusive at Pendemonium (http://www.pendemonium.com/).

Uh-oh, I feel another AD starting.

There are so many nice inks that I can easily see how people could want to 'collect them all.' I'm glad that there are so many reviews on FPN regarding tons of different ink. You can usually get a general consensus there regarding the qualities of an ink and make an informed decision on purchases.

It's worth noting that Brian at Goulet Pens runs a club called the 'Ink Drop.' Every month, you get 5 different ink samples sent to you which all fit into a theme. For example, January was permanent black inks for your New Year's resolution. It's an economical and fun way to try out inks that you wouldn't otherwise encounter.

Goulet Pens is the place I was trying to think of! Great vendor! Really nice and knowledgeable folks. Very useful website. They sell samples, too, besides their inks of the month club.

I find Legal Lapis more interesting than something I have ended up using all the time. I think I am in the minority though. Folks generally love it!

Pendemonium is my go-to where I buy all my Noodler's. My favorite is just plain old Noodler's blue with Polar Brown as a close second. Never understood the hype behind Legal Lapiz. YMMV.

Meh; acceptable but certainly not ideal. I found they skip a lot and aren't nearly the same quality as a pen that's just a few dollars more.

If you're looking to get into fountain pens, I'd go ahead and get a Lamy Safari. They are inexpensive, traditional and modern all at the same time. Make sure you buy a converter to go with it. All that, plus a bottle of Noodler's, should cost you ~$40.

I have a box of them. They work fine, but I just do not like the fact they are disposable, as I have at least 5 liters of ink at hand.

I'm still kicking it around but will probably get the Lamy Safari mentioned above as the price seems pretty reasonable. I will also check at staples for a disposable version to try out.

A vendor nearby told me the Lamy Safari and Vista (maybe all Lamy?) prices are going up Feb 1. He is not a discounter and sells these for $30, and they are going to $35. They are great pens! I held off getting one for a while as I thought they looked too "clunky" or "industrial", but I really enjoy writing with them and like the looks now.

I bought some Private Reserve Velvet Black from a Paradise Pens brick and mortar/shopping mall store last night.

Pretty well-respected ink. At about $8.95 not particularly more expensive than most on-line sources.

That is just about my favorite ink. Nice color, and really lubricating. It tends to make my nibs write a tad wider than they really are though

For the OP, I buy most of my ink from Goulet pens, Pear Tree Pens, and isellpens. The first two have the best selection of ink, but isellpens has pretty much all the noodler's (and sells lots of pens)

Have a local store (Reid's) that I will buy from if it's something they carry.

Placed first order this weekend for some samples (and a Noodler's Flex pen)from Goulet Pens. Received a personal response Monday confirming my order and notifying that my package would be mailed today.
