View Full Version : First shave with the EJ89L

I had my first shave with my Ej89L today. It's definitely less aggressive than my 38C which has been my main razor up until now. I loaded it with an Astra and shaved. I got just as close a shave as I do with the 38C. My first impression is that the razor is a "smoother" shaver if that makes sense. I didn't have any irritation but I did feel my blade angle was a little off. It always seems to take a couple of shaves to find the right blade angle when I first start using a different razor.
Astra's aren't my favorite blades but I only had one left so I thought I'd use it up. Tomorrow I'm going to use a Merkur in it. I know people generally don't like those blades but I get good results with them and so far they're my favorites. However, my next blade order they may be displaced by the red IP's.
I'll report back in a couple days after I've gotten used to the razor.
The Mühle 89 (shares the same head with the EJ) is my favourite DE. It does seem relatively mild but gives me great shaves as well. Enjoy your new razor.

This mild and fantastic razor works in total harmony with sharper blades. The feather is a match made in heaven, trust me:thumbup1:

I just shaved with the EJ 89L myself just a few minutes ago. While the EJ is not all that aggressive, it is an efficient and very effective shaving tool that just does everything right. I prefer this razor over any of the post WWII vintage Gillettes and find it yields a better shave too. In fact I'd submit, that if you only wanted one DE razor in your collection and want to stop there, the EJ 89 would be the perfect choice.
I generally use Astra blades with it but the poster above is right the Feathers work like a dream too.

I had my first shave with an EJ89L on Thursday, using a Derby blade. It handles a lot better than my 34G. Although the weight is about the same, the longer handle on the EJ gives it better balance. I got a DFS with 2.5 passes using a Spieck stick.
I had bought this used on the BST, wanting it just for the head to use on my coonctbob Bull Mastiff handle ... but the results with the original EJ handle are so good I may just leave it the way it is.
I've got one more shave left with the Derby blade ... I'll try it with a Feather next and see how that feels.
In the meantime, I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to get this marvelous razor.

I just ordered the DE89L yesterday for $39, P&H included. I am excited to try this razor, based on everyones rave reviews. :thumbup1:

I've got a couple of Feathers left. I liked them in my Super Speed but I could not tolerate them in the 38C. They were too rough. Maybe they'll work well for me in the Ej89. I'll give it shot in a few days.

I just won an EJ 89L with 90 Derby's off Ebay on Thursday. I'm looking forward to trying it out. I'm using my HD right now so that I can compare the two. Right now my favorite and smoothest shaving razor is my 41" Ranger Tech.

Yeah, I don't know why but Merkur blades have been a solid performer for me.

I love my DE89L. I don't have anything to compare it too but it works very well for me. My only other razor is a black handled superspeed and it's been sitting collecting dust because I can't put the EJ down. The biggest plus is that I haven't come down with RAD. I have enough problems already with other ad's.

I have the 86, the black handled one, and it is my favorite razor by a wide margin.
I just noticed today that TESC sells just the head for 14.04 GBP HERE (http://www.theenglishshavingcompany.com/cgi-bin/psProdDet.cgi/EJDEHbl5||Edwin~Jagger~@c~@b~@r~All|0|user|1,0,0,1 |200|)

I use the DE89L almost exclusively as my daily razor. Very nice balance and blade angle is intuitive after a few shaves. Performs particularly well with Lord Platinums for me... :thumbup1:

I have the Muhle 89 and have come to really enjoy shaving with it. It is deceptive due to it being so smooth. I can get a closer shave with my Progress, but it's not nearly as smooth.

the EJ89L is on the top of my NEW RAZORS to purchase. i have a couple used gillettes coming, so i'll be learning to use those for a while, heck i'm still learning how to use my 1st razor and i'm already thinking of the next ones.
i'm sure i'll get one sooner or later (or the Muhle 89R), seems everyone is happy with them, not many used or for sale ones out there.

The best combination in my opinion. You won't be disappointed with the result.

Has anybody used the non "l" version/chrome version? Is it really slippery and hard to hold with wet hands?

Altohugh my EJ is not my favorite razor because I like a little more aggressive razor, It is by far the most nicely finished. Great chrome!

I believe it is purely a cosmetic difference and has no effect on handling.

I have a EG89 non "L".
A little water on your hands: Not slippery
Get some accidental lather on your hands: Slippery
An EJ89L is my only razor, and I love it because it feels solid and because it's bright and shiny. I'm very surprised it doesn't get more mention on B&B.

I was trying to hold off on buying this razor. I just may have this in my hands quicker than I thought. RAD is kicking in bad!!!

I have an EJ 89L, Merkur HD and Merkur 1904. The EJ is the one I use most often, for sure though I like the other two as well. The EJ, coupled with a Feather blade and Cella soap is pretty much my standard nowadays.

You say that as though it's a bad thing.
