It's not cheap. I wouldn't want to buy a stone that's being shipped from Japan without some kind of insurance. For insured shipping to the US, it's $20. That makes the total $78. You can go to SRD and get it for $65 shipped.

Yep, you're right. I was looking at a 3/8 combo on one site for 80, and another had the 8 for 77. But, yes, just the 8, compared to all others (except for the one that had it for 77), it's the going price.

Here's a link to the place where I just bought a package deal of Naniwa stones. The one you are looking at on ebay is 8000 grit for 57 plus shipping. The one here is 60 with shipping included. In fact, shipping is included on all items. My order was shipped very fast, the stones arrived safely. Last night, I had my first honing lesson and honed several of my straights. umm...Steep learning curve. :blushing: Love it. :001_smile

FWIIW, I think the Takenoko 8K a much better hone than the Naniwa 8K.

Just better ... the feedback, how it works with a slurry and the smooth, smooth edge it produces are fantastic. I wouldn't think that a medium grit hone could make a difference. This one does. Follow it with a Naniwa 10K and you'll get one of the smoothest edges I've found.

That's interesting; one brand 8k, another for 10k. One site I read said not to work up a slurry on the Takenoko stones. Not sure why it said that...can't recall.

That is curious, I wonder why. Of course some people believe you shouldn't use a slurry at all. I've gotten fantastic results with it.
