View Full Version : Blade disposal while travelling?

How do you handle disposing of used blades while traveling?
I don't like Wilkinson blades; they have the disposal slot in the back, but they hit my face like a cheese grater. I saw one suggestion on the forum to carry a feather-type blade safe, but that seems to me kind of big for travel. I packed an altoids can on vacation 2 years ago for this but it rusted and began to flop open, not good. And hotels never seem to have slots in their bathrooms for blade disposal.
So what do you gents suggest?
-Scott.

Many older hotels still have blade slots in the vanity; I use them if I can. Otherwise, I return the used blade back to its original wrapper(s) and wrap that up in a good wad of TP and toss in the garbage can. I also tend to leave my DE in plain view (head down in the water glass) so that housekeeping might get a clue as to a possible blade in the trash.

I keep the wrapper the blade comes in and when I dispose of it I put it back in the wrapper, put tissue around it, and put it in the waste paper can. I also keep my DE in plain sight.

An Altoids mini container is small and very convenient. Unless you have had it for 5 years and keep it constantly damp, it won't rust (I've had two of these in my den for almost two years and they are both fine).
So, Altoids mini is my vote.

I put a strip of tape over the edges and toss in the garbage.

+1 on original wrapper and thick wrap with TP!

Just use a coke can. The mouth is wide enough to get the blade in and it wont fall out.
I wrap them in a few tissues before disposing. The tape idea sounds better though.
I just put the blade back into the dispenser that it came out of. Even the plastic ones without a used blade slot can be opened up to reveal a space for used blades.

I just came back from the Dominican republic. I used a beer can, supplied by the hotel.

One of these would keep them safe while showing what's inside. Compact too.

+1 Same here. I also keep a rubber band around the blade dispenser to keep the blades from accidentally coming out in my toiletry bag.

I like the tic-tac idea, think I'll try that on my next trip, thanks!

+3 wrap it in original packaging and put TP around it. Looks like a common way to dispose of the DE blade.

Many public bathrooms have Sharps disposal containers for needles and such. You could drop it off in there.

Just use Feathers:001_smile. They have a used blade slot in the dispenser.

This is what I use for a Blade Bank at home, traveling and it's small enough to fit in your kit - $1 each; :thumbup1:

As long as no one runs into you getting off the elevator.

I just use the slot on the back of the plastic blade dispenser. If the blades i'm using don't come in a plastic box like Iridiums, I have a couple of spare feather boxes I re-pack the blades into. When I get home I empty the plastic pack into my blade bank.

And it is only sixty cents with yummy mints (especially the orange flavor). Eat the mints, jimmy the top off and volia, you have a place for your blades. Good idea, a mint package should hold a week's worth without issue.

You'd fill that in a week?! Do you measure your blade usage in blades/shave (instead of shaves/blade)?

As I am hopelessly addicted to Diet Coke I just put the used blade in the endless supply of readily available cans and then pinch the can before pitching it.

Derby - The built-in blade disposal slot is a big reason I use these as my travel blades. Though it is not the only blade with that option.
Maybe someone will be willing to PIF a couple of empty cases that you can load with your favorite blades. I kept some empty Derby 5-blade packs for a while, but later threw them out.

I carry a small pill bottle with me for the used blades and then carry them home to dispose of them as normal or if I need to, I just re-wrap the blade in the original wrapper and put an "X" or write used on the wrapper and bring it home to dispose of it.

That is what I do. I purposly kept plastic blade dispensers with a used blade slot for this reason.

I use an Altoids tin. It's small and the lid shuts securely.

Maybe two weeks. I get 2-3 shaves from a blade, I estimate a Tic Tac canister would hold 4-5 blades (don't have one handy to test the theory).
However you brought it, do the opposite.

I was surprised when stillshaving remarked on the used blade slots on Derby blades; I use Derbys and hadn't noticed. So I looked and found that some, maybe a quarter, of my hoard of Derby blade packs have a slot in the back and the rest don't. Interesting. Maybe I'll set aside those Derbys with slots for travel. Thanks for the tip!:thumbup1:

I'm guessing you can fit at least 30 blades in a tictac box.

Interesting. All my Derby plastic cases came with a slot, but they were all from the same 100 pack (except for a couple of sampler packs). The only qualm I have with the blade slot is that it is sometimes difficult to open, since you need to use the printed pasteboard insert to push open the tab from the inside. I am not sure if that was by design, but it works reliably.
