View Full Version : DE Open Comb for me?

I am probably asking an impossible question, but here it goes. I have been shaving with a Safety Razor for 4 months. Like everyone else 1,2,3.....safety razors is not enough (very addicting). I am looking for my next razor. I have a very thick strong beard with sensitive skin. I can grow a full beard in less than a week.
Would an open comb or slant bar razor be better than a Parker 89r or a vintage Gillette for my beard and skin type?
Thanks

Your question is not impossible, just a toughy. I also have sensitive skin, and could grow a beard in a week. It's a blessing and a curse.
I have been doing fine with my Gillette Adjustable. Personally, I think it is all about technique, not the product, though product plays a big role in the overall experience of wetshaving. If you go to something that is going to be relatively more aggressive, which some would say a slant definitely is, then you may have some issues. Especially if you have sensitive skin. But, those issue would be overcome with the technique you use with that particular razor. I would say shop around on the B/S/T threads and see if you can find a slant, then give it a try and go from there.
So I guess my answer is this: you won't know if you don't try! Good luck.
The only right answer, you have to try it to know it...

If you go to an open comb or slant bar, please get your technique down pat or there will be blood!

Open combs turned out to be the best shavers for me. Been shaving with a Gillette New Long comb lately and like it a lot. ZBut it's a tad aggressive for me. The Mekur 11C is a fairly mild open comb that is perhaps my favorite razor to date.

I agree with Ohenry above. I had been using an Aristocrat and other lovely (forgiving) razors and was a little careless on my first time out with a New Standard Open Comb, and it took me several days to recover!

Open combs are forgiving in my limited experience. I have an old type and love it. Don't fear open comb, they are great shavers.
I want to try a slant too.

I think the Gillette NEW is a good way to get into Open Combs...

I have had a problem finding any in good working condition. Could somebody point me to a place online besides ebay and Country Joes?
Thanks

What you need is a shaver grade razor. It won't be pretty but it will work and be cheap. If you don't like it, you won't loose much...

I've found open comb razors to be less agressive, at least to me. If you look at the blade exposure on the razor, the blade is touching the combs, this reduces the shaving area to the blade between the combs, unless you are using too much pressure you will end up with tracks in your whiskers after the first pass
I started my open comb journey with a Merkur open comb, and i haven't been happier.

My best and closest shave to date has been with an *Old Type* Gillette open comb. YMMV. I used a fat handle tech handle with it...didn't have the original one. Seemed a good combination to me...It is easy to tell if your angle is off with an open comb as you will leave a comb trail of cream. Also, got a good close shave with an inexpensive Merkur 15c, too:thumbup1:
