First Shave - Gillette Super Speed/ Derby

Hi there. Been looking around for a bit. Acquired a Gillette Super Speed no date code razor from ebay. I just had my first DE shave this evening, using a Derby blade I purchased in a sampler pack.

I had a nice first shave, a couple little nicks but they didn't hurt and stopped bleeding very quickly. Despite the nicks, the shave overall was much less irritating than my customary setup, which was a Shick Hydro 3.

I used King of Shaves Oil and Some Aveeno shaving cream, which is my normal setup. I'm looking into getting some better shave soap or a brush, but am still figuring out which way to go there.

I honestly wouldn't buy that on eBay. I'd go to a CVS or Wal-mart and get it! Cheaper and no shipping cost.

Tips for a newb
1: Buy a blade sampler pack anywhere.. try 5 or 10 different brands to find out what works with you.
2: Change 1 thing at a time.. Blade, lathering product, or razor.. cange 2 and you don't know what sucked or what worked.
3: I also agree to go wal-mart and get the VDH set, The brush, soap and bowl are decent and it should cost you about $7-$10

When you have nothing to complain about, you have found the right combination - IMHO. Of course, YMMV, and all that.

Welcome to B&B! I'm just going through a blade sampler myself but definitely have found certain blades just work better for my face. Once you start going through the sampler pack you'll be able to tell what combo of sharpness to smoothness works best for you.

it's a little harder when you start out.. but it's simple.
10: Is my face red from many nicks - cuts - razor burn while I used decent technique? Yes- Bad Blade GOTO30.. NO- GOTO20
20: Did I get a decent shave with my decent technique and my face isn't :cursing: angry YES- Good blade No- Goto 30
30: Try another brand.

I usually know when I've cut myself becuase of my bad technique, and I knw when it's my blade.. beign new it's a little harder to know if you've done it or you blades done it... but you'll learn.. just like everything else, you'll learn. :thumbup:

Can you take a pic of your razor? Some razors work best with certain razor blades, derby's tend to be a nice shave for someone starting out. I find the Merkur razor and the Wilkinson Sword classic blades work best for me. You will know if you get irritation. If no irritation, and you are looking for a closer shave, try a blade that may be a little sharper than the Derby.

As for the brush, I buy all of mine from Penworks, or The Golden Nib (same company). He has great brushes for best price, shipping is low cost as well.

Any other questions let me know, post a pic of the razor would be interested to see what super speed it is?

Here is my razor. I'm now shaving with the Gillette 7 o'clock Super Stainless. I bought a sample pack of blades. The Derby seemed pretty good although I'm still working on my technique so time will tell.

My plan is to rotate through the blades one at a time (11 brands) and then rotate back through when my technique and cream/soap situation has improved.

I purchased Kiss My Face from the local Whole Foods to give myself a smoother shave while I take the recommendations on this forum under consideration for a brush and soap upgrade.

If the blade that you currently use or the next one feels right, I would recommend to keep that brand until you are done with them.

That makes sense, but I feel as though I don't have enough of a frame of reference to know what a good shave is. They are all much different than the Mach 3.
