TOBS Bay Rum?

Hey gents!

I'm considerng buying some of this stuff. How's the scent like? Does it smell of cloves? Performance etc? Your experiences!

This was my first bay rum. There are better ones out there. I've heard it described as smelling like a dentist's office, and I kind of agree. It wasn't horrible, but I never used it again after it was gone.

I think of bay rums as a tonic, kind of like witch hazel. A lot of people want a cologne effect from their bay rum, but I think that may be asking too much. The best bay rum I've tried, and still use, is St. John's. If you're looking for a longer lasting cologne-like effect, Meehan's would be hard to beat.

I'm basically looking for a Bay Rum that functions like they originally did. Face tonic with a mild astringent effect. Nice smells and longevity is just a bonus.

I like cloves, so if you guys have tips on those I'd be happy. I love Trumpers Bay Rum, but that's a cologne.

Barclay Crocker (http://barclaycrocker.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=barclay&Category_Code=BAYRUM)has a bodacious bay rum sampler. IF you're looking for "real, traditional" bay rum, you might want to check out Dominica and St. Johns. I like the Dominica, from personal experience.

The sampler at Barclay's is a good place to start. DR Harris is my personal favorite followed closely by St. John's (original). Everything else is a distant 3rd. The dominica bay rum with limes is a nice one but it's not straight bay rum.

Though not my favourite Bay Rum, TOBS works surprisingly well as an aftershave and leaves the skin quite smooth (thanks to the castor oil in its formulation, I guess).
