I am seriously started looking into converting to using DE instead of the gillette mach3. I never used a DE before, and want to give it a shot.
I am looking for an adjustable safety razor in fair to good condition. I am being unlucky on ebay and the prices are so expensive for me. Anyone with a good offer, care to help a begginner like me.

Thanks,

Kyle

kachmar,

If you haven't already done so, check out the selection of Merkur razors at: www.classicshaving.com
As far as adjustable go, you will find many fans for all three of the Merkur adjustable line. If you're not dead set on an adjustable, I would highly recommend the Merkur HD. Its a great razor for all skill levels.

Also, be sure to check out the review system on this site. It is a fantastic resource.

Thanks a lot.

I decided on an adjustable only because I haven't used one before. I thought using an adjustable will allow me to experiment more with it, instead of using a non adjustable one and if it did not work for me, then drop the whole safety razor's switch idea. Make sense?

I wouldn't suggest getting an adjustable razor to start out with. See - adjustments simply complicate the whole mess, as if you aren't getting a close enough shave - you'll think you need to change the adjustment - instead of what more than likely is your problem - changing technique. See - this becomes a problem because once you REALLY open up an adjuatable razor - you run the risk of really tearing yourself up, and chances are if that happens - you'll give up.

I've helped literally dozens of newbies get setup with DE's - and I find the newbies who start with non-adjustable have the best/easiest time learning.

My suggestion?

Don't spend a lot of money. Go to QED USA (http://www.qedusa.com) give Charles a quick call (if that is humanly possible  - you'll know what I mean soon) and order up a Merkur HD, or a Merkur Long handle DE razor, and a package of Merkur blades. DO NOT use the blade that comes with the razor - as they tend to be harsh and have lost their edge. Also - Charles is one of the few vendors left - who will preach the same message I do... you don't need to spend a whole lot of money to get an incredible shave and have a ton of fun. He will tell you the skinny, get you setup on products, and probably throw in a sample or two.

If you need help - feel free to post away with questions! Also - as a newbie, the B&B DVD is a super/cheap resource i'd highly recommend as well.

That is some great advice from Joel. I meant to include a link to QED but was being pulled away from the computer (literally) by my toddler.

Thanks Joel and Kyle,

I visited qedusa but I could not see any razors available for purchase! I sent charles an email though checking this out.

Joel, your advice make a lot of sense about starting with a regular razor, instead of an adjustable, thanks again.

Unfortunatly Charles site is awful. You can find his DE razor selections by clicking "Other great products" or whatever that flashing section is called on the left side (towards the bottom) of the main page.

He'll get ya locked and loaded and ready for action!:thumbup1:

It's always best to email Charles with questions about his products. He usually gets back to you within 24 hours.
