View Full Version : Manliest Smelling Shaving Cream

Which shaving cream (or hard soap), in your opinion, has the manliest scent?
I'm a relatively new DE shaver and have tried AoS unscented, Tabac, and Proraso--I'm looking to pickup a product with a strong scent.

Soap scents don't get much stronger than Tabac.
Are you looking for a scent that lingers after you're done shaving? The scent of a soap or cream won't last much longer than the shave does. Maybe you want a manly AS or EdT?
Given that it's winter, you might try Pinaud's Clubman Special Reserve AS/cologne. It's a leathery scent, and it lasts. And lasts.

I'm not much for creams, but I've tried many soaps now and the manliest smelling by far are Tabac and Proraso Green.
...Now that I think about it, I've got a tube of cream called Wild Stone from India that smells pretty darned manly as well. It's like the Axe of India, as far as I can tell. It's also the best lathering out of the creams I've tried. I've only seen it available from desistores.net. If you're interested Mr. Vandelay, PM me your address and I'll send you a sample.

You may want to consider switching to wearing a cologne or eau de toilette after the shave. The scents you're after are more outspoken than strong in the usual parlance, meaning that they don't really last: they were not meant nor designed to. Also, your choice is much less limited with colognes.
Tabac qualifies; Aramis probably too (if it's anything like the EdT, that is). You could also go for a mix of gasoline, lard, abrasive and pure scotch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UsoDl0l4x4E) for that ... subtle touch .
Extremely classical and manly is rose-scented soap or cream. Musgo Real I'd classify as 'ye olde school' rather than 'manly'; and Speick is pfffrrrttt....
thanks

This is usually true, but i really have to comment on this one  ! I have found one soap which scent lingers with you for whole day and that mysterious soap is Mama Bears aromatic pipe tobacco.
Whenever i use it the scent will linger with me for almost whole 24h (not really strong, but noticable when closing the 24h limit).

Another revival of an old thread.
Anyway, although it is not very popular here, I will throw out J. Peterman's 1903 Shaving Cream. This is, in fact, the manliest shaving cream out there. According to the website, it smells like (and pararphrasing a little) “old woody fougère, citrus, bergamot, clary sage, cardamom, with leather notes, smoky labdanum…elemi, tabac, frankincense."
To translate, it is quite strong and really does smell like something you just pulled out of a dusky old trunk from 1903. It reeks of cigar/pipe smoke and leather. You might as well be sitting in the men's smoking room at the Biltmore Estate while shaving with it.

So far I think the manliest one I have tried has been Geo F Trumper's Spanish leather.
One of my standard creams is Palmolive Classic. The name already implies it's classic with a dito smell. Since I associate classic with the way my father smelled after a shave (and probably my grandfather as well) it has the most manly feel to me from any scents...

Well, I kinda have a thing for shaving creams that aren't heavily scented. I figure any scent is a manly scent as long as you don't smell like you were involved in a perfume department shelving disaster.

Buy Musgo Real "Classic Scent" cream or soap, but before you use it, ask your girls to "check out" the strong smell from your new gear. :001_cool: Watch your ego inflate. That's what happened to me last Christmas, I never cared for perfumes or AS, and I was unsure because my soap really stands its ground.

Another vote for both Tabac and Proraso Green. The only more "manly" scent I can think of would be bourbon and pipe smoke... I haven't tried Mitchell's wool fat, but from what I've read of its scent, that sounds pretty masculine to me, too, or at least rugged and wooly.

For my money, it doesn't get much manlier than original Old Spice, followed by Old Spice AS. Mama Bear's Aged Spice is a darn close doppleganger of original Shulton Old Spice. Although for aftershave splashes, Clubman Aftershave Lotion can't be beat.
I'm just amazed nobody typed "Whatever one I'm wearing".
In the most fashionable valley of Tibet lies the Awesome Valley, and at the most casual and laid-back end of the Awesome Valley lies the Monastery of the Monks of Cool. These fashion-plate monks have the most ultra-modern monastery, stacks of GQ magazines are delivered bi-monthly, perused by the Monks of Cool, then distributed as monastic leaflets throughout the surrounding quaint rustic villages by flawlessly dressed and coiffed monks.
But the most trying part of the tutelage of the Monks of Cool is the final test. A young acolyte, seeking to remain and study at the Monastery, with its dark wood-paneled walls and tasteful oil paintings, is led into a room full of tailored three-piece suits, dark jeans with linen shirts, the threads of varying lengths so it constantly looks tastefully rumpled, and is asked by his Master to pick out the most fashionable thing in the room. Most young acolytes fail this test. The failed acolytes return to the world, their spirits bent but not broken. Most journey to New York, entering the world of high fashion as either models or clothing designers. Only a chosen few answer correctly. They give disdainful glances to the three-piece suits, the dark jeans with tastefully rumpled linen shirts, the sweater-vests, the cashmere V-neck sweaters, then down at their carefully-tailored saffron button-down shirts and answer, "What I happen to be wearing."
Whatever works for you is the correct choice.

Everyone keeps saying what reminds them of they're father or grandfather shaving. My grandfather died before I was born and I've never seen my father without a beard in my 33 years. He did however wear tabac so recently when I tried the soap I'd say that's quite manly. My others I'd say Proraso green and a soap I have from the highland soap company. I wouldn't say MWF is particularly manly sent. I'm hoping to get some vetiver soap soon so think it will take the lead :biggrin1:
