I'll add the caveat that I don't have NEAR the rotation or experience that others have with good colognes. I would have to say that of the five listed, the overall best so far would be Floris #89 or maybe Eucris.

I'm somewhat new to colognes and picked up a lot of knowledge both here and on Basenotes. Thus far I have purchased maybe 10 to 15 bottles and a number of decants and have rotated them quite a bit. My current 5 favorites, by category, are:

leathers/woods - Knize 10, YSL Jazz, Gucci PH
orientals - YSL Opium, Gucci Envy

I've just ordered some of Sue's new colognes (Bay Rum with a Twist and the Sandalwood) and have a 1 oz decant of the B&B parfum strength on order with Rik. The most contoversial frag by far on Basenotes is Kouros. I bought a bottle and have gotten very mixed reactions from my wife.

I'm finding this hobby is getting a bit addicting as I'm reading the boards (this one and Basenotes) on a daily basis and my bathroom shelf is filling up quickly. For those of you unfamiliar with Basenotes, the "for sale" section of Basenotes is a wonderful complement to the B&B decant club both for full bottles and decants. As many of you seem to really enjoy Penhaligons, there is a vendor with very attractive prices who has a listing under the following url:

1) Penhaligon's English Fern

Thanks DEF. You have now rekindled my interest in this great fragrance. How could I have forgotten it? It blows scents like Polo completely out of the water. I don't know if Polo technically falls in the same class as EF but I sense they are intended to be of the same general type. I think Polo is fougere but is EF considered the same? I suspect it would knock Douro out of my top five. EF and Trumper's Wild Fern are superior scents and I love them both.

Todd,

English Fern is a great fragrance. It is considered "fougere," which in fact is French for "fern." Now, ferns really don't have scent to speak of; fougere is one of those invented fragrance names given to the accord of lavender with oak moss. English Fern has the fern accord as its base, along with some other green notes like thyme and maybe rosemary. I also pick up a distinct wintergreen note, but I'm not sure if that's because EF contains wintergreen or if it's just an artifact of some other combination in the cologne.

I'm not sure if Polo is supposed to be fougere. Basenotes.net might have info on that. Regardless, I'd put Penhaligon's English Fern in a class way above Polo or most other mass-market colognes. I once raised an eyebrow or two by mentioning EF in the same breath with Truefitt & Hill Grafton; and now I tend to agree that it was a mismatch. Though T&H does describe Grafton as a "fougere," it's in a much more modern style than EF.

If you're really into the fern scent, Roger & Gallet makes a great fern soap; it even comes in a big bath round with a plastic case. Penhaligon's also markets an English Fern shaving soap, but you may have to go to their company website to get it.

Regards,
Doug

It's funny that I looked back at my earlier post and realised that my list is now nearly completely changed. I am not sure if it is my ever fickle taste in scents or the flowering of my shave/scent "knowledge", but I find that my preferences have shifted.

I would now list:

GFT Sandalwood - big favourite. For me, everything comes together in this cologne; the sweetness blends beautifully with the sandalwood. Big plus: my wife loves this one.

T&H Grafton - this is the only hold-over from my original list. I still really enjoy the masculinity of it.

Acqua di Parma - class. This is my definitive summer fragrance. When I get out of the shower and the sun is beaming through my window, this is the one I grab. Pair with a Borrelli suit and Martegani shoes.

GFT Eucris - my other favourite. This is old world elegance. A gentleman's cologne. Not for boys; leave your CKs at the door.

As for a fifth, I will have to think about it a little more...

Well said. I know that some guys don't believe in "age appropriate" scents and to some extent they are correct. However, Eucris brings out the Errol Flynn, John Wayne, William Powell, David Niven, and Alec Guinness in a fellow. You'll note the list contains both classic type actors and roughnecks. Eucris is this way. It's pure CLASS but has an edge that is unmistakenly testosterone laden. Agreed, a mere stripling of 25 has no business wearing this.

I have found that the vast majority of men's frangences are garbage. I find that they all smell the same, or just cheap. But there are some really great ones, and since there are so many fragrences out there, there are hundreds of good ones.

Here are my all time top 5:

1) Perry Ellis (the original one that is hard to find now) I've always loved it!

2) Polo, by Ralph Lauren. I love this too, but I could never wear it for the longest time because when I was in my teens EVERYONE seemed to be wearing it. I loved it back then, but it seemed so cliched.

3) Tabac. I always have a bottle of this kicking around. I don't wear it often but when I do I wonder why I don't wear it everyday.

4) Lagerfeld. The original classic. Its kind of a tough guy men's frangrence that beats you over the head. But its warm and spicey. Great stuff.

5) Old Spice. Okay, I talked about 'cheap' earlier. And Old Spice is cheap, but its such a classic.

Having just read over the many posts in this thread, I'd like to add that I have not tried 99 percent of the ones mentioned. So please do not think that I am referring to them as 'garbage' when I refer to 'most men's fragrences'.

Send them an email requesting their mens scents before you make a purchase...then you will know which one you like best. I was just their last weekend and that is a store you can spend some money in. I have Douro and Castile...but on my list is English Fern...Endymion...Opus 1870...Bleinhem Bouquet...I did not like the Hammam Bouquet on me at all. The good thing is that my mom has a house in Vegas as well so she is back and forth all of the time. So one fragrance at a time will fly much easier under SWMBO's radar...

L'Occitane Eau de Baux <- maybe my pH just mixes right with this one but girls love to be around me when I have this on
Chanel Platinum Egoiste <- same as with Eau de Baux. This scent just mixes right with my pH.

Dolce and Gabbana smells great but the dry-down has a slight cloying on me.. I should probably not spritz so much of it on but that also has a good mix with my pH. Because my side of the office is dominated by women, they all like to give their opinion on the fragrances I wear and they truly LOVE it when i wear Eau de Baux and Chanel.

The more colognes I have tried, the more difficult it is getting to decide a top 5 and I find that my favorites change. That being said, I have attempted to make a list. I recently purchased several colognes from the Floris sale and have found that I love the Floris colognes. To me, they appear to have a significant alcohol kind of scent. The Elite is just great, the Santal, what can you say about it, just great. The balms are also very good. They go on thick, kind of like AOS balms but that is where the similarities stop. The AOS tends to dry to a greasy kind of finish where the Floris balms, at least for me, absorb virtually completely with no significant greasy feel. So, here goes my updated list:

1. Floris Santal/Elite
2. Trumper Sandalwood
3. C&E Sandalwood/Sienna/Nomad (tie)
4. Truefitt 1805
5. Boucheron Jaipur pour Homme

This is all subject to change!

After having thought things over, My current 5 would be:
...
L'Occitane (the one that smells like a forest during fall)

That would probably most likely be the Eau des Baux ("eh-de-Bow"). I sampled this scent this weekend and recalled a very woody-cedar like scent coupled with the bitter, acrid scent that is associated with dried fall leaves. I thought that it was a very classy scent. Most definiately a Fall or Winter scent, but one that I would be comfortable wearing daily to work.

I did not try the Eau des 4 Voleurs, but the description on the website seems to fit the bill as a possibility.

L'Occitane has wonderful retail shops to visit if you have a chance. They are perfectly willing to give out shaving samples, but they did not have any pre-made men's cologne samples to give away.

Their newest L'Occitan Eau de Toilette fragrance is described as,

Created through the distillation of authentic A.O.C. lavender, blended with the peppery, nutmeg scent of burnt wood. A panoramic and complex fragrance, redolent with the rich scents of Provence, in all their ruggedness and mystery. Intended for men, but women love it, too.

I found it to be very similar in make up to Penhaligon's Endymion and Floris' Santal - dressy and classy without being overbearingly spicy.

All in all, I was very impressed by the L'Occitane products and presentation.

I agree with you. Looking at the website, I thought Voleurs was the closest description. I would like to sample this one. Does anyone know where L'Occitane products are carried in the Kansas City area? I seldom run across them. Not interested in any more blind buys. Been burned too many times.

That would probably most likely be the Eau des Baux ("eh-de-Bow").
Go there: http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php#top

Step 1: choose Alain or Juliette

Step 2: copy and paste eau des baux

Press “speak” and you’ll get the correct pronunciation.

I like heavier scents, with lots of character.

So, here are mine favorites:

1. M7 by Yves Saint Laurent
2. TABAC by Maurer & Wirtz
3. KOUROS by Yves Saint Laurent
4. HOMME by Dior
5. BRIT by Burberry

Lately, I am wearing my own mix of Bergamot, Lavender and Rosemary...

Both are a bit far, but if I happen to be in St. Louis or another city with L'Occitane, I'll definitely check it out. I was thinking of one of the more local boutiques like Hall's or even Sephora or something like that in K.C. itself.

Try Sephora. Their website had one L'Occitane men's fragrance. Maybe the store has more.

I thought it was funny to list St. Louis stores, but they are the only L'Occitane stores in MO. And I think they are the closest to KC.

Being still a fairly young guy and have tested quite a few colognes from the more "modern" designers, here's my top three:

1) Christian Dior's Dior Homme
2) Tommy Hilfiger's Freedom
3) Laura Biagiotti's ROMA

The 2nd one is the freshest and youngest scent of the three. The 3rd one has a very deep but rather strong scent, yet very enjoyable. 1st one is a subbtle and enjoyable scent which I can wear in just about any occasion.

I have a few other colognes on my "to try" list but I'm taking my time. Finding a good cologne is like finding a good wine: it takes time to find the real good ones which according to your personal preferences suits you best.

I agree with you. Looking at the website, I thought Voleurs was the closest description. I would like to sample this one. Does anyone know where L'Occitane products are carried in the Kansas City area? I seldom run across them. Not interested in any more blind buys. Been burned too many times.

Hi Craig. Well, the Sephora store in the Oak Park Mall at 95th & Quivira in Overland Park Ks. carries some L'Occitane products for men. I know they have the shave cream in a tube:thumbdown , and the A/S balm but I don't remember seeing any of the men's edts. Another little store here in Lawrence carries some L'Occitane items as well. All I've seen is the soaps(including refills of their great shave soap)so I don't know about the edt's. http://www.aumarche.comThey are very nice to deal with but the items are not on the website. You would probably need to know exactly what you wanted from them before you call. Hope this helps.

I just wanted to say that thanks to B&B my top 5 has completely changed. I can’t stand anymore what I used to wear in college. I put Kenzo in my top 5 because I had fond memories of it some years ago. I got to sniff it again last week and it was vulgar and overpowering. I sampled a lot of edt (all of Floris, Trumper, Penhaligon’s, Frédéric Malle, L’Occitane, C&E, some L’Artisan Parfumeur, some Creed, C&S 88, etc.) and my new, very temporary top 5 would be:
Penhaligon’s Endymion (good daily edt)
Penhaligon’s LP9 (good evening scent)
Carnal Flower (when in floral mood)
Angéliques sous la pluie (“Angelica in the rainfall”, my favourite earthy scent)
Penhaligon’s Castile

As evidenced by this top 5, Penhaligon’s and Malle are my current favourite perfumers. It will likely change as I expand my experience with edt.

Creed Green Irish Tweed

Aramis (my first girlfriend bought me my first bottle)

A lot of fragrances turn sweet on me, so I have to keep toward citrus types.

You might check out Caswell-Massey Number Six. It's around $28, when it's not on sale and it's a classic scent - George Washington wore it - and it's a pretty light citrusy scent. Perfect IMHO for the summer months.

So.... what is everyones top 5 favorite colognes?

Issey Miyake (for men)
Lacoste
Grey Flannel (Geoffrey Beane, if it's still made)
Old Spice
Obsession (for men)

Numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 are in actual order-of-preference (mine). Issey Miyake smells/feels wonderfully citrusy; Lacoste and Geoffrey Beane fulfill my sublimated NY Jewish desire to be a Palm Beach county WASP -- OK, so what if I live in Boca Raton; after all, I'm only renting! -- and both have that Ralph Lauren, unselfconscious, old-money casualness of chinos (with the buckle in the back), polo shirts, and molded-to-your-feet deck shoes (worn without socks); and Old Spice is the only smell I can remember of my father, who died so very young, way too many years before he had any right to.

Obsession, like Elizabeth Taylor, is overpowering and tasteless; but when she was good (and for so many years, she was), she was intoxicating.

Oddly enough, I own 5 colognes, which is all I have ever tried. So here they are in order of preference

You guys are getting me thinking...I believe I've only worn 2 or 3 different colognes in my entire life on a regular basis. Periodically I try something new, but I find that when I try them at the store I have no issues, but sometimes when I wear the scent all day, I get tremendous headaches, to the point that I can't wear the cologne at all. Wasting my money in this manner is frustrating, so I guess I stopped entirely. Perhaps it's time to give it a go again.

Right now, I can't imagine tiring of any of those, but many more are knocking on Heaven's door.

in no order here they are:

1) Polo, by Ralph Lauren (I seldom wear it, and I used to hate how EVERYONe wore it in the 80s. But it truly is a classic)

2) Lagerfeld - strong, masculine

3) Perry Ellis (the original one) I always loved it. it was unavailable for a while but can be found again)

4) Old Spice. Always a great smell

5) Paca rabanne - havn't smelled it in years but I recall liking it

OK, I haven't tried a lot of colognes yet, but right now I'd say

1. Creed Bois du Portugal
2. Czech & Speake No. 88
3. Penhaligon Blenheim Bouquet
4. T&H 1805
5. Floris Santal

I just got a huge decant of No. 88 from a guy at Basenotes, and the more I sit here sniffing it on my arm the better I like it. He also threw in a tiny sample of Jean Pascal that I haven't even sniffed yet.

Most of my favorite colognes along the journey of my sixty years have been discontinued, including Caswell Massey's original Newport and their Vetiver. Here are my current favorites.

PRADA FOR MEN
TRUMPER AJACCIO VIOLET
TRUMPER EXTRACT OF LIMES
GENDARME
CASWELL ELIXIR OF LOVE #1

(A note on the last one- this is promoted for women, but the subtle musky scent is very unisexual. I suggest you give it a try and decide for yourselves!)

I just got a huge decant of No. 88 from a guy at Basenotes, and the more I sit here sniffing it on my arm the better I like it. He also threw in a tiny sample of Jean Pascal that I haven't even sniffed yet.

OK, a bit of a revision for me, as I've been trying quite a few new ones recently.

1. Czech & Speake - No. 88
2. Tauer - L'Air du Desert Marocain
3. Penhaligon - Blenheim Bouquet
4. T&H 1805
5. L'Occitane Eau du Badian

Also receiving votes: Serge Lutens - Ambre Sultan; Floris - Santal; L'Artisan - Mechant Loup; Etro - Sandalo; SCS - Very V.

The Creed has falen off the radar for me. the more I wear it the more I notice that as it dries down it turns into something that, while pleasant, becomes very nondescript. And for the price, nondescript is not good. Once I finish the sample of it that I have, I probably won't buy any more.

Did I really miss this link all this time?

Oddly enough, I own 5 colognes, which is all I have ever tried. So here they are in order of preference

1. Dunhill for Men
2. Burberry London :thumbup1: :001_wub:
3. Burberry Brit
4. Ferrari Yellow :001_cool:
5. Dunhill Desire :001_rolle

Really, the top three sort of float around and tomorrow they may be in a different order; they are my Top Three, and will be replaced when I run out. The other two are okay, but I'll be getting something different next time.

BTW, I have "Dunhill" (the 1934 one) on order; it's supposed to be good ...

Okay, time for an update. I have been on a Dunhill (1934) kick of late, and I've just got a small bottle of Knize 10 which I love. Burberr London has sort of fallen out of favour a bit, as (by comparison to those two) it seems really 'sweet' like cologne-candy. My top 5 now:

1 Dunhill for men (1934)
2 Knize 10
3 Dunhill Man
4 Burberry Brit
5 Creed Himalaya
(6 Blenheim Bouquet ... sample only, so I can't really rate it now but I can tell I really like it.)

I think I can get to five...

New West (Aramis)

That last one took a moment. I have others, but they're occasional use, at best.

Tough to really rank the top five without overworking the brain. But here is what comes to mind this morning:

- Creed Millésime Impérial
- Chanel Antaeus
- YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme
- Gucci Envy for Men
- some kind of tie between Bois du Portugal, Terre d'Hermès, Gucci pour Homme, Mugler Cologne, and I don't want to start thinking what else ...

I really need to try out more of the classic, more traditional scents, but I am still working on that. I do have a couple of decants coming in from the B&B store though.
