Missing a few, but...
http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/2046/pipes.jpg
I mostly roll my own cigarettes, and enjoy the same tobacco in a pipe, but do put regular pipe tobacco in them occasionally. Those small corn cob pipes let me grab a smoke break at work, or a cigarette size pipe. I've tried a lot of small pipes, including glass, metal, and clay ones, but they're just awful, even that wood one. I thought that the glass or metal might survive a day's worth of cigarette breaks without getting bitter, but they really ruin the smoke. That metal one was used once and I couldn't even finish it. It's like smoking dried out stale tobacco. The corn cobs are by far the best thing for a quick tobacco smoke break. They're cheap enough that you can toss them if you overwork them, but they also breathe so well that they can often recover from overuse. There's also a couple of cigarette holders that give a pipe-like lightness to a made cigarette.

Ummm, just so you know, that metal one is not for regular tobacco. Think "wacky tobacky". I had one very similar in high school.

True but Steve tells us that he tried to use it for sampling tobacco, and I take him at his word. He also tells us that its pretty worthless, so lets not get too sidetracked.

As funny as the whole metal bowl meant for smoking tobacco of the greener persuasion is....thank you Steve for unknowingly volunteering yourself to be a guinea pig. I've been seriously contemplating buying one of those for quick smoke breaks lately. Not having much time for a pipe and not wanting to smoke cigarettes anymore has made enjoying good tobacco difficult. What brand and model are those smaller cobs you have? I bought a tiny pipe made by MM one time, but I think it is made of wood of some sort and it is not a good smoker by any means.

Nice collections, gentlemen. I have always admired the looks of wooden and Meerschaum pipes.

Unknowingly? Hardly! I've purchased about a dozen little pipes from head shops specifically looking for something to replace a cigarette. The last time I smoked the other stuff, Ronald Reagan was president. For convenience at work, I've stayed away from anything large or that contains water. The only one I've found that's worth using are those Missouri Meerschaum Miniatures (http://www.corncobpipe.com/product.php?productid=16145). They're available varnished or unvarnished. I haven't looked today, but from what I remember and can see, the varnished ones are baked, and the unvarnished ones are merely dried. They used to have a lot more information on the web site about the processes, and what I see there now is a big simplification. Overall, I've found the less finish, the better the pipe tastes, but the baked ones are harder which is good for some pipe tobaccos. Other unfinished pipes are Eaton and Missouri Pride. The big difference in the minis is that the unvarnished ones are thicker, so they have a smaller bowl, and they're softer and give off more corn flavor. Either way, you'll get a nice spicy flavor from the corn cob until they're a bit broken in. It doesn't take long, though. The pipes also vary a bit in draw, which is true of all the corn cobs. I've actually found the mini corn cob pipes more consistently useful than the larger pipes. I think it's because the stem has a flat end instead of a tapered/cut one.
Someone produced a real meerschaum clay pipe shaped somewhat like a coffin. I looked all over but never found a retailer for it. It was reviewed on RYO magazine, and is supposed to be a very good pipe. OTOH, I doubt it lets you oversmoke.
There's actually a better partial solution. A good cigarette holder concentrates the smoke and makes it feel cooler, and also moves the smoking end further away from the face further reducing irritation and heat. You can oversmoke it, but it doesn't sour as quickly as a pipe, probably because there's no steaming hot bowl. As with the small pipes, most of them are junk, and you have to try them to know. The best ones I've had are made from light, porous wood and are unfinished, but the bore is also important. Too many of them aren't even drilled the right size to hold a cigarette, nevermind getting the rest of the bore right. You basically want a hole for the cigarette, then a small hole the rest of the way through, not a large hollow all the way through. In other words, you want to draw the smoke through a thin hole for most of the distance. A long taper might also work, but I haven't seen that. Oddly, unless I'm mistaken, the compression inside the pipe actually heats the smoke, but it feels like it cools it. This is probably why you want it compressed as early as possible and then have a long thin hole--to give time & distance for the smoke to cool. Of course, you'll probably want to make your own cigarette with a good tobacco and a good machine for best results.

Medico was a very popular mass produced pipe from S.M. Frank and Co. They were known for using the Medico paper filters. That's a good pipe to start with, and expand from there.

Merry Christmas everyone, Happy holidays to all. I hope you guys made out as well as I did. After years of explaining to my wife on gift ideas, "Just get me a pipe", she finally listened. What's great about it is that I would have never picked this pipe for myself. I've seen it before and remember thinking,"That's one ugly pipe." Now that it's mine, I think it's great. I appreciate the unique shape that can't be classified as anything other than a Peterson 305. Just had a smoke with it and I am loving it.

No, it needed a flint when I purchased it, other than that it works great. I generaly just use matches for pipe lighting, so it's mostly for looking at. I occasionally see them on ebay with the box for $20 -$35, I gave $25 for mine. At the time I had no idea what they were worth, I just thought it was cool.

First of all I must make a correction this is a JAKE Hackert pipe for some reason it is stuck in my mind that his name is Jack. Anyway, the antler shank is very securely attached to this cob, and is not meant to be changed out like a forever stem is meant to. This is a Forever Cob!

Yeah it's interesting, relatively cool smoke, probably from the insulation chambers, the pipe itself doesn't impart any flavors like a briar, and you're supposed to clean out any cake that forms. Also, it doesn't handle moisture the same as a traditional briar.

It is and the parts would probably have been useful but it's gone now anyway. It was a dedicated machine for only one task but it kept stalling in typical Dell style so it went away.

The cracked bowl with epoxy is cashed. If the seller didn't mention it get your money back, if they don't respond within 24hrs file a complaint with PayPal and eBay. Don't dicker around the quicker you act the more likely things will go in your favor but don't pay for a misrepresented item!
Otherwise nice set of pipes the rest should clean up really well.

Had my first experience with shaping a Vulcanite stem tonight and it went very well, I am not really a straight pipe guy and wanted to put a slight bend in the only straight one I own. I watch the Dunhill manufacturing video and the procedure for stem shaping was discussed, basically soak the stem in very hot water for a couple minutes then shape gently to the disired curve and dip in cold water for a minute a presto custom shaped stem. Here is a before and after shot.

Being new to this shaving thing, I'm glad to see something here I can relate to! Lol! I used to smoke cigars now and then until I bought my first pipe three years ago. Been hooked ever since. I don't have anything fancy, but I do have one Boswell (with plans to add more Boswells eventually) and my grandfather's old pipe (not sure of the make). Also have a cheaper Comoy, Savinelli and an MM cob for when I'm working in the yard or whatever.

As far as I know, it is the original stem. I spent about 1.5-2 hours carefully removing any oxidation - which was very minimal actually - rubbing down the stem with 0000 steel wool and then bringing the shine back up with a gentle non-toxic polish and a rag wheel. Pretty much the same process that I used on the ebay Nording shown here, but the Dunhill was in much better shape when I got it: Nording tobacquisitions post (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/200900-Tobacquistitions!-Post-Up-Your-Brown-Leaf-Goodies!?p=3602926#post3602926)
The Dunhill really needed very little work, as it was in very nice shape when given to me. I polished the stem and hit the bowl with a couple coats of carnuba wax and I was done.

Oh, ok. I'm gonna have to get some polish & carnauba then beacuse I would love it if at least a couple of my pipes stems stayed that shiny. Where do you buy your wax? Cause for that matter several of my pipe's bowls need a light sanding & a good polish.

You can get a puck of carnuba from PIMO's Pipecraft, amongst other places. It requires a flannel buffing wheel and some skill to apply, don't start on anything you hold dear. Check out JWhites sticky on restoration for the basics if you haven't already.

I actually haven't used the rubber bit yet while smoking. I installed it the other day and it did feel a lot more comfortable clenched in the mouth though.
This generic briar pipe feels great in the hand and I love the finish but it whistles like crazy when smoked. I believe the whistling is caused by a ditch in the bottom of the bowl directly below and connected to the smoke hole/draft hole (not sure what it's called). It looks like whoever drilled the hole accidentally nicked the bottom of the bowl and when you puff on the pipe you get a lot more air than you should, it feels like you are sucking on the small end of a funnel. I'm going to attempt to use some pipe mud to fix it and see how it goes. Wish me luck!

Here is one I made from a kit from PenguinBriar. If I had to do it over again, I would have done something different with the shank, it doesn't quite flow with the stem. That and the stem is too small for the bowl, the stem from my Nording fits it and looks more natural. Live and learn.

Really nice looking grain on this one either way.
BTW, do those little leather beanbag chairs work pretty well for larger or odd shaped pipes? I don't have any really large ones, but a couple I have don't really settle into the clear plastic of folding stands very well. I just want something I can trust with a lit pipe for a couple minutes on the porch. Wind is a real pain.

Thank you, no, I bent and finished the stem. The turning and forming was done by Kim and was included in his pipe kit. I recommend him to anyone thinking about carving their own, he sends you pics of the block, pre drills according to what you plan to carve, and patiently answers lots of questions. Someday I'll get a small lathe to do things like stems and brush handles, but it's way down on my list of things to spend money on.

Beats me ... probably 1995 - 2005 or so for most of them, though the oldest is the large freehand that is fourth in on the upper row of the right hand rack. That's a Kabik which I bought new in 1976; I've been smoking a pipe off and on since I was 19.
I used to go to pipe shows, haunted eBay, and bought and sold estate pipes. I still have a box of cleaned, restored estate pipes around here someplace. Back in the day you could buy a bunch of old pipes for 20 bucks and often find a Dunhill, or a Charatan, or at least couple decent Comoys or GBDs -- for some reason, estate lots often had high grade English pipes in them. I also bought and sold a ton of Savinellis, which were almost always good smoking pipes.

I found this beauty at my local antique store for $20. I found out from the owner of Upshall pipes, who also now own Astley, that it is most likely a Dunhill made pipe from the early 80's that was rusticated by Upshalls and stamped for sale by Astleys. After a little spitshine, it looks pretty nice. I must say that Upshall was very helpfull by responding to my e-mail about this pipe, which they certainly didn't have to do, and I fully intend to get one of their new pipes for my next addition!

It doesn't have to be an expensive or fancy pipe to a nice pipe, feel free to post it, I enjoy seeing all kinds of pipes, I posted a $20 Yello-bole earlier in this thread, just because a pipe is inexpensive doesn't make it unworthy :-)

I saw these stands on the bay, but I refuse to play the bidding game, they need to offer it at a buy it now price, I like this rack because it fits a great many shapes and sizes of pipes, unlike the conventional old school racks that basically only hold straight billiards.

The seller makes them and sells them fairly regularly. I just dropped the opening bid on a couple, and the third time around nobody outbid me.

Likewise. Yeah I have two of the round stands & they suck for anything with that has the slightest bend to it. I'm not much of a woodworker, but if anybody had some basic drawings for a rack like this I would certainly give it a try.

I wouldn't say I have fallen out but just other thing have consumed my time. It is also hard not being able to smoke in the house. That makes it tough in the winter.

I halfway keep forgetting & halfway am putting off posting a pic of all of my pipes. I have about the same number as you but they seem boring when I line them up cause so many are older drugstore brands. I may just skip the ones I never smoke & just show off the ones in my regular rotation.

Getting packed up to move across the country. Seemed like as good a time as ever to take a few pics. The rack:
254961
All boxed up and ready to go:
254962
...except for these two guys to get me through the next few days:
254963
This is the 100 qt. ice chest that formerly served as my "coolerdor". I removed the cedar lining and re-purposed it for the trip:
254965
254969
Both the box and the cooler are making the trip in my car, since the bulk of my stuff is traveling in a non-temperature-controlled moving truck, and is going to sit in storage for a couple weeks.
I think I'm ready!
