I just finished a Kristoff Ligero Maduro Churchill (http://www.famous-smoke.com/kristoff+ligero+maduro+churchill+cigars/item+29860) with some Laphroaig Scotch 10 Year (http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?N=40+4294966990+4294967087&area=spirits&ProductID=703&Ns=Name%7c0). It was a very nice smoke compared to the Flor de Oliva I had on sunday. Much fuller and slightly sweet but with a peppery note on the end. Really enjoyed it and I will have to grab a couple more of these.

Tonight I had a CAO La Traviata Davino (robusto). This was my first experience with CAO's La Traviata line, having purchased this particular cigar about a month or so ago on the recommendation of the shopkeeper at my local cigar bar.
This, my friends, was a very good cigar, and at around $5 locally it holds its own quite well against pricier cigars. Color me impressed, and I have to say the whole time I was smoking it I was I kept thinking it was very Cuban-like. Turns out, after researching this line a little further afterward, that was exactly what they were going for. They got it. It isn't identical, but it may be the most Cubanesque cigar that I have sampled. Two thumbs up on this one

Well went to the lake on sunday since it was 99* out. Took one of the Macanudo Crystal Cafe Robustos with me. It was an excellent fairly light smoke which worked out well for a hot day. Very mild compared to the Habano Reserve Corona I had wednsday but still a very smooth smoke.

Diesel Unholy Cocktail paired with Fegley's Brewworks Hop'solutely. I know most of you enjoy scotch or glass of wine with your cigars, but for me a good beer and a cigar is heaven. Both were good, especially the Hop'solutely. If you can find it, I highly recommended it for all the hop heads out there. It's a great hoppy beer with a crisp citrus finish.

Well last night was Wednsday karaoke for the wife and I. To go with my JB blacks and Killians I took along the Cain Daytona, I believe the size was a corona. This was a noticably heavier smoke than even the RyJ Habano reserve I had last week. At various times you got hints of pepper, espresso, and maybe a nutty caramel in the middle. All in all a great smoke altho very full bodied and rich, not the kind of smoke I could have often. It would probably be very nice as a sunday afternoon smoke with a slightly sweeter drink to pair it.

Well last night karaoke smoke was....
The Macanudo Hampton Court Maduro, a corona sized smoke with a very dark maduro wrapper. Overall, in true Macanudo fashion, a very mellow smoke. As my first maduro I think I expected a heavy full bodied smoke but it twas not to be. The stick started out with a sweet coffee taste for the first third with just very occasional hints of pepper. In the second third it mellowed even more providing just a slightly woody/leathery taste with again just the slightest pepper notes. Unfortunately I didn't get to finish the last third so I can't tell you the finish. One disappointing problem was it seemed to burn unevenly which shouldn't have happened as this one had been in the humi for the last almost 3 weeks. Overall I would probably just buy a Macanudo in the non maduro if I did it over again.

Rocky Patel Fusion Churchill and a decent Yellow Tail Merlot after an evening of grass cutting. Fusion is an OK cigar, a combination of Rocky's Vintage 1990 & 1992. You'd think that combining these great cigars you'd get something even better; not the case. Only really gets going (for me, anyway) halfway through. Good enough for tonight.

Tonight I went to a cigar event at a local shop (http://www.martyscigar.com/Martyscigar/Welcome.html) and smoked Xikar HC Series Habano Colorado Robusto Cigar (http://www.famous-smoke.com/xikar+hc+series+habano+colorado+robusto+cigars/item+34644)with some Hennessy Cognac VSOP (http://www.bevmo.com/Shop/ProductDetail.aspx?D=remy&Ntx=mode%2bmatchall&Dx=mode%2bmatchall&Ntk=All&Nty=1&Ntt=remy&N=0&ProductID=1321). This was a new cigar for me. A bit on the full-bodied side without being overpowering. It burned long and cool. A very nice smoke that went well with the cognac. I also picked up a nice Xikar cutter, lighter and a few extras for the humidor. A good time was had by all.

Tonight along with my pipe I had a La Flor Dominicona Reserva Especial perfecto. It was fine as a stick, peppery and varied which I like, but I was a little disappointed in the build. It came apart towards in the last half, once the burn got past the 'hump'. I have a few more LFD in the box, so hopefully they'll hold up better and it was just the nature of the beast for that little perfecto.
Tonight I smoked a Xikar HC Series Criollo with some Jack Daniel's Single Barrel (http://www.missionliquor.com/Store/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=000249&PNAME=JACK+DANIEL%27S+SINGLE+BARREL+750ML&BACK=A0004A1). For those that love a criollo wrapper i would suggest trying this cigar - it was great :w00t:

Like most of RP's production, the Sungrown can be "off" or "on" depending on batch . . . generally, I prefer the torpedo in that line anyway, but even there, a year or two can go by that's just "meh" and then . . . a magic box will hit the shelves of my local B&M.
For the most part, Rocky's pre-release samples are stellar, and his first releases not quite as good, but pretty nice smokes. After that, it's a crap shoot.

This weekend I tried a relative newcomer to the cigar scene, Panacea, made by the Flatbed Cigar Company, based out of Bucks County, PA. I just received a 4-pack of their Red Habano Robustos last week and I was anxious to give them a try. I paired the cigar with a glass of Four Roses Single Barrel, also an acquisition from last week & I was fairly impressed by both the bourbon and the cigar.
I really wanted to like this cigar, as I am always looking for something a little different from what everyone else is smoking, and I was not disappointed. I found it to have a nice earthy taste, which I like, and a little hint of natural sweetness. A few grassy notes snuck in to the flavor a few times, leading me to believe that this tobacco may be just a little bit young. I suspect that this cigar may transition from "good" to "excellent" after spending a few months aging in my humidor.
They also included one of their new White Corojo cigars as a freebie with my order, and as a nice extra touch my receipt included a personal note of thanks from Paul Bush, the owner of the company.
If you haven't checked these guys out yet, here's a link to their site: http://www.flatbedcigarcompany.com/ If you are interested in supporting a small, US-based cigar maker, they are worth a look, IMO. :thumbup1:

Nice, Laz :thumbup1: If you search around the web, they have received some pretty good reviews, so I thought they were worth a $25-30 gamble. I will probably let my remaining sticks hang out in my humidor for a while before lighting another one up, but I am eyeballing the "Moonshine" sampler already. I mean moonshine and Mountaineers are a perfect combo, right? :biggrin1: If they weren't all 60 RG in that one I would have snagged it already.

I attended an event at a local B&M shop last night and got to meet Litto Gomez, the owner of La Flor Dominicana. He seems to be a very nice well-grounded guy.
Being at an LFD event, I smoked an LFD Double Ligero DL 600 (5 1/4x52). Overall, I give this one a thumbs up, with a couple of disclaimers; This is a smooth, very strong cigar, and the strength sneaks up on you because it is so smooth. I suspect this one would definitely make you queasy on an empty stomach. Next, the smoke from this, and some other LFD cigars that folks were smoking last night, has a very sharp smell. I don't know if it is the ligero that causes it, or if it is something else, but it is very pronounced. Don't smoke this one in your car or near innocent bystanders :wink2:

Tonight was the Partagas Robusto with a Rum and Cherry Dr Pepper. A fairly mild smoke that slowly turned from peppery and woody in the first third to creamy and earthy in the second. The finale was a slightly spicey note with a bit of darkness, if that makes sense. Not as full bodied as my usual RyJ Habana Reserve all in all a very enjoyable smoke that took just over an hour. Wonderful!

Pinar Del Rio Habano Sun Grown robusto with a Land Shark Lager. I don't usually pair cigars and beer, but this one worked. It was my first smoke from Pinar Del Rio and I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am still terrible at translating cigar flavors to taste notes (e.g. leather, wood, etc), but I did pick out some distinct pepper/spiciness, light earthiness, and maybe some leather in this one. It stayed pretty consistent throughout the length of the cigar, with the pepper coming to the front every once in a while and then shifting back, allowing the other notes to become more dominant.
It was an easy-smoking cigar, and beautifully constructed w/a nearly flat head, the type seen on many Cuban cigars. The draw was very easy, but not loose, and it produced wonderful clouds of creamy smoke.
PDR calls this a full-bodied cigar, but I would say that it is a solid medium, at least in the 5x50 robusto. It never really approached the level of full-bodied.
As a bonus, I smoked this one while sitting on our deck after dinner and all present, including my wife (she who requests cigars that "don't smell awful" when she shops for gifts for me at a B&M), agreed that the smoke from this stick is very inoffensive, despite the abundance of smoke provided by the cigar.
All said, I don't really have a "go to" cigar, but this one is going on the short list. I nubbed this one and enjoyed every bit of it.

Well tonight was a wonderful Fathers Day smoke with my son. He had a Macanudo Hampton Court and I had a RyJ Habana Reserve Belicoso. Normally I am all thumbs up for the RyJ HRs but I have to admit I was a little dissappointed. It started off fairly nice and then started to tunnel and burn uneven in the first third. The second third was fairly consistent after I got it to burn evenly. The last third became very tight on the draw and routinely went out. While the tastes were consistent with the normal coronas and robustos I smoke, the belicoso was inconsistent and very hit and miss. Since I came in a sample I will not despair but I would not buy the Belecoso's.

Decided to have a rum and coke last night. To go with it I had the Gurkha Archive 1887 Toro. A decent smoke but probably a little expensive for what it was. It had a nice peppery note in the beginning and a mild spicy taste to the middle third but then the ending was a little blah running back to the peppery notes but very dulled down. I will also add that the rectangular shape never got to feeling comfortable either in the hand or when drawing. All in all not bad but not a cigar I would recommend for the price.

Last weekend, was a La Gloria Cubana Charlemagne Maduro. One of my smokes of choice. Nothing until next week or my allergies clear up.
I'm debating between another Charlemagne or an AF Hemingway Classic.
Maybe someghing I haven't tried before. I'll see what's available.

On Saturday I had the afternoon and evening to myself, and was able to enjoy the following:
Romeo y Julieta Reserve Torpedo AND Churchill sizes
and a Gurkha something or other I had some a sampler...
The RyJ were very good.

I am almost embarassed to post this mini review but I was impressed enough with the stick to do it.
I have been looking for the Ronson Jetlite lighter and found out Walgreens carries them so stopped in for a peek. While there I bought one of their house brand tubed Blenders Gold Natural Honduran Coronas and just smoked it with the wife(She has taken to liking the taste of some of my cigars!! WooHoo!!) and for a drugstore cigar it was damn good! Very much like the RyJ 1875s or the Macanudo Crystal Cafes. A light to medium cigar that is very, very creamy with some occasional pepper & spicy notes and even a slightly leathery taste at times. I have to admit I was very impressed with it for what it was, lighter than I generally prefer but nice in the heat. I will be buying some more as the wife said I should keep some of those in the humi to share with her. A four pack goes for $9 or a bit over $3 for individuals tubed. It was definitely a shocker as I had almost no expectations for it and just bought it on a lark.
If you haven't tried one I would drop the $3 for a tubed one and give it a go as it should be a very pleasant suprise!

I have looked at the cigars behind the counter, but could never pull the trigger! I might have to try it for kicks one day.
Tuesday a Pinar Del Rio Oscuro, and Wednesday a Padron Londres Maduro.

Last night was a Partagas 1845 Natural Robusto at a cigar tasting with the wife. The Partagas was like by the wife enough that she bought me two more. Then later at karaoke with freinds I had a No 49 Factory Throwout Corona from a bundle I bought. The No49 was decent but tasted very green to me so they will probably get to rest for a while until I have another one.

I stopped in to Mid-town (NYC) Cigars yesterday and picked up my first bundle of J*R Bolivar Cuban "taste-a-likes" coronas. I tried it last night and it was a bit rough on my throat, but not too bad tasting. The real deal is a bit smoother tho, IIRC.
I also picked up a couple "Genuine Counterfeit Cubans"... yep, that's the name. I'll report in when I sample those.

I hope your GCC's are better then mine. I bought a box of the box pressed coronas 7 years ago and still have a lot of them. I'm saving them for the next time I go camping so I can use them as tent spikes. They're as hard as rocks.

Egads, I am getting as bad as some of you guys...
Normally I smoke one or two a week, but I had two last night and two tonight. Tonights smokes were a RyJ Habana Reseve Corona and the second was a No49 Factory Throwout Corona, during a nice pool party BBQ both were very nice. The RyJ HR was as expected, the No49 was a litttle less green than last night but still a very meadowy stick if that makes sense. Was nice considering that was two yesteday and two today!

 Keeping my fingers crossed then. .... I bought only 3 of them anyhow as I don't care for box-pressed.

Neither do I. Somehow I messed that, when I bought the box.
All those JR branded cigars can be a crap shoot, most respond well to a good soak in the Humidor for several months un-cellophaned. I have found most ship to wet to smoke straight out of the box.

Thanks Jim! The "bolivars" I got seem kind of dry and hard, in fact. Straight from the cigar shop too which was interesting since the whole store (Mid-town Cigars -- a bewildering stocked-to-the-rafters cigar haven. You've probably been there) is basically a two-floor humi. A lot of the on line reviews tho do mention letting them "marinade" in the humi a bit tho. I've stuck them in with some local production which are over-humidified and we'll see what turns up.

I have not really bought anything JR from the local stores, just via USPS so its possible that you have a cigar that has aired a bit already. I do remove the cellophane tho to store.

That sounds like good advice. I was debating.
As long as your humi is stable, I find it does make a positive difference.

I use a cigar jar (http://www.amazon.com/Acrylic-Cigar-Jar-Humidor-Capacity/dp/B0027ZCKCM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311345882&sr=8-1) (an acrylic bell jar type thing) with a crystal humi stick. This set up works much better for me (ie much more stable) than my wooden humi with those sponge disk type things.

Just to let you know they make crystal filled humidifiers that fit the stock foam humidifiers for most humidors, not a bad inexpensive upgrade.

Thanks, James. I may have to look into that. My wooden humi is too nice looking to just sit there. Yet, it refuses to calibrate/remain constant.

CQ.... I just smoked the GCC down to the nub! I realized upon further research that I had, in fact, bought the 1958 / pre-embargo version of the Gourmet Figurado and was pleased that it wasn't all that box pressed; more like just a little flattened on one side. Anyhow.... great thick white smoke, nice ash, and nice full peppery leathery taste that mellowed a bit after the first half of the stick. One could definitely do worse for about $2/stick (on line pricing). I've definitely paid more for worse. I'll have to have a few more, but I'm definitely tempted to pick up a batch when I get storage room.
(oh, and yes, the sticks are quite firm)

La Gloria Cubana Artesanos, came in a sampler. This is a very nice cigar!
Tonight I smoke a PANACEA Black (http://www.flatbedcigarcompany.com/Perfecto-Natural_p_23.html) It was a mild to medium cigar with hints of chocolate, wood and nuts. It burned slow, cool and long. It was the first of the sample packs (black, white and green) that I have smoked from Flatbed Cigars. A quality smoke enjoyed with some Laphroaig 10 years (http://www.missionliquor.com/Store/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=000180&PNAME=Laphroaig+10+years+750ml). I can't wait to try the others as well.

Glad that you liked it, Laz - I would hate to think that I gave out a bum recommendation! I just put in another order from the web site tonight as well. I also just found out that they are working on another blend, a blue label (you may have already heard the same if you signed up for their email list). I don't know any details on it yet, but they are including a freebie sample with all orders placed in the next 3 days (July 24-26) so I should have one in the box. Panacea is rapidly staking out more real estate in my humi.

Well it was karaoke night with our freinds. My son came so I gave him one of the No 49 Bundle Coronas, I had a couple puffs and they are really settling down and tasting much less green but still a ways to go tho. After we got home I broke out a cigar I got last week at a tasing, a Macanudo 1968 Robusto. This was a wonderful smoke with a large variety of tastes ranging from cedar and spicy with some pepper in the first third then the second third smoothly went into a creamy dark cocoa and toffee flavors with a hint of coffee or expresso but never sweet, the last third went back to a little more pepper and spice but kept the creamy aftertaste. All in all a great full bodied smoke that took about an hour or so and it may rival the RyJ Habana Reserve for my new favorite!!
Jay
PS- As an aside I looked it up after I smoked it and the habana reserve and macanudo 1968 seem to be very similar in wrapper, binder, and filler so I think I am hitting on a theme here!

That must have been an extremely pleasant drive. I've smoked the Royal Corona on and off for about 5 years and tremendously enjoyed each and every one. I'm a little jealous as I've run out for now and am limited to an RP Edge. Really good, but no (Bolivar) cigar.:001_tongu

Well Gents, a nice hot 108* with 25% humidity(alot for us). Tonight smoke was the Cain Daytona Conrona. I was a little wary as I had a the same smoke in either the Robusto or Toro size several months ago when I started smoking cigars and found it a touch to much. The Cain Daytona Corona was a nice smoke, peppery and earthy with a touch of cream and espresso in the middle, I must admit tho' I smoked it down to a nub(1" or less). I found the Corona so distinctly different from the earlier Robusto/Toro that I must comment. I had a wide variety of flavors from a mushroom, alfalfa, and red pepper at the start that smoothed into a slight espresso and black pepper in the middle with the last third being a nice return to smooth red pepper and cream with a touch of black pepper to the end. A very nice smoke and very much in my vein. I must admit to being slightly disappointed that I didn't enjoy my first Cain Daytona this much as I thought at the time it was to much stick.
I think I can certainly say, for now, that I am a Nicaraguan cigar kinda guy. My favs so far have been the RyJ Habana Reserve, the Macanudo 1968, and the Cain Daytona. All of which I found out after the fact are pretty much all Nicaraguan construction, next will be the Oliva Series O that has been n the humi for about a month. I can't wait!!!

Last night was a pool party for a close friends surprise 40th birthday and so copious amounts of rum & coke and cigars were smoked. I started off the Night with a RyJ Habana Reserve, split a Blenders gold with my wife, Smoked a No 49 Throwout, and finished of the night with an Oliva Series O combined with chocolate covered strawberries that my neighbor made for us. Way to many cigars as I still taste like an ashtray but a fun time was had by all!
