Only smoked half a bowl so far...like it better than the Escudo anyway! :biggrin1: The 'just doused campfire' aroma doesn't carry though too much to the taste (thankfully?) I do detect, of all things, a kind of cumin or east indian kind of taste though. Interesting stuff...I'll definitely give it a few more goes but I'm starting to think I might just be a simple aromatics guy.

My advise for any one starting is twofold. First never let anyone tell you what you're supposed to like. Aromatics get a bad rap, mainly because there are a lot of bad ones out there. But many of my favorite regular smokes should be classified as aromatic; G&H chocolate flake, G&H rum flake, G&H dark scented flake, SG mayors chocolate flake, SG grousmoore plug, SG 1792 Flake. Some may try to kid themselves that they are different, but to my mind if you flavor or scent the tobacco in a noticeable way it is an aromatic. Those are my preferences by the way not necessarily recommendations. There are many truly high quality aromatics made with top notch tobac and natural flavorings/liqueurs. If you find the aromatic to be your favorite let us know in a post! I know of some great blenders who make top notch blends of the sort. The frustration can run high in finding that first bit of joy when starting. I went through some difficulty before I found blends rich enough to satisfy my particular palate, but when I did it was fantastic.
Second if your trying a new type and it doesn't suit you jar it up and save it, properly stored tobacco will age indefinitely, and you can try it again later when your in the mood for something different. Also you shouldn't let one blend, or bender for that matter, of a type ruin your impressions of that style of tobacco. For example I don't care for most dutch aromatics, but that doesn't mean I don't like aromatics.
Above all smoke what you like, and like what you smoke.

Good advice from jwhite! I would like to add one thing (I believe I've told you this before, but just in case):
Never had a problem jarring up a non-aromatic.
However, I've found that jarring up aromatics can be hit or miss. I've noticed some aromatics mellow out quite well after aging in a jar, but some tend to lose their flavor, go stale, and leave behind nothing but the soapy taste of PG.

I don't think Embarcadero is a cigar leaf blend, at least not according to Pease's blog (http://glpease.com/BriarAndLeaf/?p=40) and tobaccoreviews.com (http://tobaccoreviews.com/blend_detail.cfm?ALPHA=E&TID=2862). I bought an estate pipe a couple months ago and I never smoked it because it had a horrible taste that I though was just the stem from when the seller tried to clean it up.
I soaked the stem in vodka for 12 hours it's much better, but the pipe it's self still has some horrible taste. I'm currently trying to exercise this demon with a custom blend of Prince Albert layered on top of 5 Brothers on top of Ashton Artisan's blend. I can't tell if it's working or if I'm dead.

ROLF I've been there brother. Have you tried a S/A treatment? Try reaming the cake as close to wood as you can without gouging the bowl and do an S/A or three. That should seriously weaken the evil spirits in that pipe, and a new cake should exorcise them completely.

Wow, that sounds amazing. Has it been aging in the tin or did you jar it?
Aging in the tin. I bought a LOT of tobacco that had been sitting gathering dust in local shops a number of years ago and stashed them away. If I reach into the file cabinet... let me pull out a few.
mid-90's C&D Pennington Gap
2000 McClelland No. 25 Matured Virginia
2001-ish Pease Samarra and Mephisto
A lone tin of 1991 McClelland St. James Woods, when it was tinned for Levin Pipes under the Personal Reserve Series
Two silver-foil 8-oz bags of Esoterica Cardiff and Hastings (unknown age, but at least 10 years)
Several 10+ year old tins of Torben Dansk Red Virginia No. 3 (fell in love with this blend one winter and then they discontinued it)
There's more floating round in there, but the secret to having a stash of aged tobacco seems to be to go nuts and buy way more than you can ever smoke and then forget about it.

Don't be afraid to "make" your own! You may try several and say, "x is missing a certain something that y has and vice versa" and those things may complement each other and if you buy a few ounces of each you can play with percentages and come up with your own.
Taking some advice from tobaccoreviews.com I blended Lane BCA and 1-Q 50/50 and have found a perfect smoke for me. I call it my "house blend" that I share with others and enjoy immensely when I want something light and aromatic yet flavorful. Give it a try!

Hmmm... not a bad idea. I may try that with some left over samples I have.
Question for all: does "house" and "bulk tobacco" necessarily or at least generally, mean "low quality"? I suppose that will depend on the blender, but I guess the question is... is it worth spending time with those or should I stick to the commercial "name brand" stuff?

I've never had any luck with house blends in my area, but I've only tried a few. In fact, I wish I hadn't started with local bulk tobaccos, as it nearly turned me off to the whole thing. That said, I'm sure there's some good ones out there, and some tobacconists may actually make their own blends rather than re-labeling commercial bulks. Boswell comes to mind.
jwhite
01-10-2011, 07:59 AM
Many of the very best tobaccos around are sold in bulk some exclusively so. Some examples are Samuel Gawith, Gawith and Hoggarth, Cornell and Diehl, McClelland and Peter Stokkeby. Some tobacconists Like Pipes and Cigars still employ a proper house blender who creates special blends from high quality materials, as opposed to the Lane mash-ups some retail stores call blending.
No offense intended for those that like to experiment with there own mash-ups, I happen to be one of them but I don't confuse myself with those who spend the time, effort, and experience to become a master blender. Just as I love cooking and I do pretty well, but I don't call myself chef.

A lot of those bulks found on places like pipesandcigars are very good and are made by reputable companies. You might find the exact same thing you are smoking there, under a different (and more widely recognizable) name. Lane Limited '1Q' is the #1 selling pipe tobacco blend in the US. I'll bet you've never heard of it, but I'll also bet every B&M store owner has.

I've only recently found out that you are a cigar smoker. I've toyed with pipes for a little over a year now and never got real serious (I have over a thousand cigars). So the Mrs. Dustinl buys me this pipe for Christmas and I feel my AD blood pressure hitting the roof. Now I am all over pipe vendor sites checking them out. I still have a humi and cooler full of cigars but I haven't bought a cigar in over a year, and now I have over 15 pounds of tobacco. It's quite a slope.

LOL, the ADs hit hard, don't they? But, to say that I'm a smoker period might be a little stretch. I have a few stogies around and some pipe tobacco (now) and every now and again, I get the urge to light up. Maybe once a month or so. But, I've been having more lately now that I'm attempting to rediscover pipes. (My grandfather smoked half and half and I fondly remember the smell, however, I find it unsmokable). In any case, I have yet to hit on either the must have cigar (he also smoked white owls...ick) or the must have pipe. Maybe my smoking frequnecy will change then. But, I also try to live fairly healthily and keep the smoking to more of a "social" frequency... at least for now.

I just ordered that exact pipe. What do you think of it?I love them. It's impossible to beat cobs for smokability at anywhere near their price point. I like Missouri Meerschaums because of their control over the whole product and its 100% made in the USA. The corn is grown here, with fairly stringent laws over fertilizers and other chemicals. The pipe making is also a known process with known ingredients. The same can't be said for the knockoffs.
That said, I have a bunch of them for new tobaccos. I also like the Country Gentleman and my Freehand models.

The new churchwarden and come C&D Autumn Eve. This is a new tobacco for me and, at least in the can, smells wonderful.
Along with the Autumn Eve also arrived Blockade Runner & After Hours.

Blockade Runner's up tonight. I must admit some initial confusion/surprise when I opened the tin and found what appeared to be a brownie.
So, question... should I crumble the whole thing up now or just break up a chunk at a time?

I haven't lit up yet today, but it looks like tonight's smoke is going to be a new pipe (a just-arrived MM Diplomat straight stem) w/ some new tobacco (C&D After Hours).
edit: lit up about 1/2 an hour ago. impressions will soon be over in "pick for me ..."

Jacknife plug in my bend Falcon. Very nice tobacco. Rich and round. Somewhat sweet (for me at least). It's the kind of tobacco one could sit around and think deep thoughts about. I sliced a narrow strip off and it ended up looking like a broken flake. I didn't rub it out... just stuffed it in. It did need about a half hour to dry out before lighting.

Gawith Hoggarth Best Brown #2 in my "working in the garage/backyard" pipe. I was looking for a FVF-substitute (c'mon SG!) when I picked this. It tastes closer to Erinmore Flake than it does to SG Best Brown Flake. Very sweet. Really enjoyed it, but not an everyday smoke. I need to find something with that more hay-ish flavor of BBF). Had a bit of tongue bite.

There's a pretty good chance of me ending up with a tub of Sugar Barrel and a dedicated cob for that blend.
