Nice and slow, which helped me get some sweetness from it. I think I need to dry it out a bit more next time, as it really was tough to keep lit and I had to relight multiple times. I just used one flake, roughly rubbed out. The flakes are pretty small, so two flakes would give me a full bowl (as opposed to a half bowl like tonight). The aftertaste is really nice and sweet, which is promising. I think, for the next round, I'll rub it out a bit more and let it dry for an hour, instead of half an hour, to see what happens.

Had my first pipe ever in my brand spankin new Peterson kapet 408 with some Hal o'the wynd. It went well for a first timer flying solo, and the smoke was quite tasty. It was reminiscent of having a mellow cigar, but "sipping" at it for a long time instead of full blast smoking it. I made sure to prevent any overheating as per the warnings from some other threads in here, and only had to relight the bowl, um, like six times :blushing:
Looking forward to giving it another shot in a day or two. Thanks for all the help, guys!

So what do you think of the P-lip?
So what do you think of the P-lip?
I like it. It definitely keeps the smoke off your tongue, while still giving you the flavour. I haven't had "roof-of-mouth-bite" with it in the two smokes I've had so far. I'm not sure if I'd want it on all my pipes, but I'll probably pick up another Pete with the p-lip to have in the rotation. This system pipe is a really nice smoker for me so far.

Had a big ol bowl of the Rattray Hal O the Wynd in my Peterson Author. While trying to learn proper filling technique I used the Frank method, and think I got it but was sadly unprepared for the mega-dose of nicotine that left me feeling wonky for a few hours afterward. I'd better stick to short bowls for a while :blushing: The good news is that up til the wonkiness, it was a great smoke out in the backyard under a great tree with all manner of hummingbirds and housefinches flitting around.

The Ambassador blend is one of the strongest full flavor pipe tobaccos I have yet to taste and I absolutely love it. If you don't enjoy it when you do get to smoke a proper bowl I would suggest saving it for a few months to see if your tastes change.

I am working on finding out who did the repair, the original stem was damaged by a guy I had sent the pipe to for clean up and restaining, he somehow damaged the stem causing a series of small cracks so he sent it to be re-stemmed by Tim West (not recommend) and he did a poor job then he sent it to a different pipe repair shop with the results in the photos above, as soon as I find out who did the work I will let you know.

It's really awesome. I totally get great flashbacks and memories of him from when I was a kid, sitting in his chair out beside the cottage, contentedly puffing away. He was a great man, a really good person and a real man without being all in your face about it. Quite a joker, too, but very hard-working and dedicated to his family.

I have shifted back to cigars as the weather has been warming up, but finally sat down and smoked a bowl of C&D Autumn Evening in the big Nording last night.
Smoked some MacB Golden Extra in my Brebbia Sabbiata Nera 623. I overheated the pipe and some of the finish bubbled a touch and now has peeled a bit. Not too bad, but still a bit gutted :(

I'll post some pics once the camera battery is charged. I like this pipe a lot, so I'm glad it isn't too bad. I'm thinking of making this my 1792 pipe, just because it's got a smallish bowl with a very nice shape.

Due to all the allergy craziness I have been dealing with I couldn't smoke for over a week. I't is something I can live without, but it was disappointing to pass by my pipe rack in the evenings. So I'm feeling pretty good now so I kinda tapered back in Wed. night with an aro. Yesterday I got started earlier in the day with my navy flake on lunch. After work I picked up a new stem for my MM Country Gentleman so when I got home I filled it with some Devil's Holiday :devil2: by Dan Tobacco. Then since it was Friday night I went on to have a nice full bowl of C&D - Pirate Kake :pirate: in my Spaniola's Pipes freehand plateau that lasted me late into the night.
And now on to today I'm starting off the evening by sampling C&D - Black Duck in my MM Missouri Pride. The blend is full, well-rounded, & complex (6 tobaccos in this one:thumbup1:). I can't say I've loved every blend of their's I have tried but overall I am gaining quite a respect for Cornell & Diehl. :ouch1:

...I think my cob pipe is getting sour, might be time for a replacement... I haven't had a cob sour on me as of yet. I'm curious how long you've had yours, how frequently, & what you smoked in it. Of course exact details aren't critical I just find my cobs in a very regular rotation & I'd l like to be able to put off replacing them longer if possible.
Also I wonder if a little salt/alcohol would clear up the taste. I know it can work great for briar, I'm just not sure how it would work with the less dense material. Of course to many it might not be worth the time since cobs are so cheap.

Well, it's my second one, if that tells you anything. I have a St. Patrick's Day 999, and I really like it. Feels just right in your hand. Bowl is on the smaller side, so it's perfect for a shorter smoke. I just got the Shannon in yesterday, and today was my first bowl with it (uh, and my second). I really like the 999.

Yes, I rubbed it out about 90% and let it air out for about an hour, could be partially the pipe too but this is a better experience than the SG 1792, I will try the 1792 again in this pipe soon, I didn't dry the 1792 at all either so that could be part of the issue too, we shall see.
I jarred most of my 2oz of BCF, but left two flakes aside to try some time in the near future. If it's good, I might order some more for the cellar. I have a lot of tobacco on my "to try" list. In fact, most of my cellar! Not that I'm letting that stop me from buying more.... :whistling:

A couple of my pipes have wider fishtail bits (~2cm) & I can't for the life of me keep them from gravitating towards my canines. I have to change the softy every dozen smokes or less cause I end up with a hole bored clean through them. I fear if I didn't use the bits my stems would look like my dogs got ahold of them.

Stylish, dark and alluring. Generous quantities of Cyprian Latakia are blended with matured red Virginias, exotic orientals, and just a little bright flue-cured leaf to offer a deep, full-bodied yet silky smoke with an intriguing sweetness, enhanced by a discreet and mysterious spice. Maltese Falcon possesses an exquisite balance - a wonderful all-day English style mixture, I would give this one 5 stars.

House to myself today, so fired up my first bowl of Frog Morton in the System 314. A very nice blend, but it's not going to knock Squadron Leader off as my favorite English. The P-Lip took a bit of getting used to. I don't exactly "dislike" it, but when I let the pipe hang a bit it puts smoke on the roof of my mouth right behind my teeth, and that area got a little raw. It'll just take some getting used to.

I'm no connoisseur, and this was my first bowl of Frog Morton, but Squadron Leader is definiely a stronger blend, and I found it smoother, too. FM seems to have a higher latakia content I think. I liked the FM, and I'm looking forward to trying it out more, but to me SL just has the perfect taste & aroma.
Well, I really liked the SL last night, even though I had some trouble getting it to burn well (I packed a bit too tight in that Dublin, so by the time I got to the bottom, the tobacco was solid and I couldn't get any draw). I do like the smokiness of latakia, which reminds me of Islay Scotch. I'm sure I could find room in my cellar for both :)

However I didn't let the tobacco dry out long enough and I could barely even get it lit. So I unpacked the bowl and set the tobacco aside, then loaded up Sutliff's Charlemagne. This is the second time I've tried the Charlemange, and it's quite boring. Out of the tin it has a slight fig and raisin smell, very little flavor while smoking, and the room note...is a slight fig and raisin smell.

I added it to my to-try list. I've liked any VaPer I've tried thus far & Esoterica Tobacciana has a good rep.

I notice a certain "apocalyptic" theme running through your DVD collection there, Aaron.
Haha, yeah the picture was taken in front of a small section of my horror movie collection:death:, but I like comedy and sci-fi too.:a45::clown:
Mac Baren Golden Extra in my Petson System Standard #312 Ebony. Every time I smoke this pipe, I like it a bit more. And it was pretty nice the first time!

are flakes easier to deal with when rubbed out?
I think so different preparations yield different results and you can tailor things to your preference. With firedance I find rubbing it out provides a more even burn and the topping evolves better through the smoke.

HOTW today in the SJ pokerDarn you guys...Price in particular!:cursing: I'm in the process of getting two new pipes, but it's never enough! Right now a poker or pot are my favorite shapes that I don't own (well, there are the cobs...but those don't count). I would be fine with either one for now. And of course then there is the Xikar Pipeline...when does it end...

Sorry Nick, just doing my part to fan the fire of AD. :whistling:
This has quickly become one of my favorite pipes, BTW, and the shape is a big part of that. Love love love it. It smokes great, plus I get a small enjoyment out of just setting it down on the table. (I'm a dork, I know.)
And yes, I am a big Xikar fan. I've got a couple cutters and a cigar lighter, plus I've bought a couple others as gifts, so it was only natural to go with a Xikar when I was looking for a pipe lighter. I really like the "Old Boy" style, and their warranty makes any Xikar purchase a no brainer.

(I'm a dork, I know.)Yeah a SJ is out of the range of what I am (or more likely what SWMBO is) currently willing to spend on a pipe. But I'm definitely going for a poker soon. Maybe I'll luck out & find an estate one in sweet condition.

Plus I like the price a lot more than a Corona. I think the Pipeline will be my next "major" (for me) purchase.

I got this one from Uhle's. They had it on the bay, and I got it for a ridiculously low number. I actually was looking at two SJ's at the same time, won this one and got the other one for just the opening bid. Both about what you'd expect to pay for a nice Peterson new. I probably should've bought a lottery ticket that day.

Not that I really need a new pipe at the moment, since yesterday I received a new (to me) Peterson Shannon 999. But I can justify the alleged poker since I'm not counting the 999 as my pipe purchase of the (insert vague time-frame just for the sake of breaking it). I say it doesn't count because I traded one of my lesser-used pipes for it.
Late last night I took the Shannon on a trial run with some P.Stokkebye Luxury Twist Flake while reading some E.A. Poe.

I smoked my first bowl in at least 10 years- Solani Silver Flake in a Missouri Meershum. Very nice flavor, and at first I didn't like the scent. After a minute or two it started to smell pretty good- kind of rich, for lack of a better word. Never got any tongue bite, and only once did the bowl get a bit too warm. I just slowed it down and all was okay. I had five relights, but I only allowed to air dry for 10 minutes after rubbing it out. I will rub some out a half hour before I leave work and smoke it on the way home. I will be driving, so I will get a better idea of smell (I smoked the first bowl outside). I cannot speak to any nicotine punch- I smoke a pack of cigarrettes a day, more or less, and am kind of immune to vitamin N. Overall, a good, relaxing experience. I don't know why I ever stopped smoking pipes.

Snuff a couple piles of Viking Dark and tell me how immune to nicotine you are :001_tt2: now if you could migrate away from the cigs you will be home free :wink2:

Actually, that name rings a bell. I was over at a buddy's about a year ago drinking and he broke the snuff out. Let's just say it opened the nasal passages right up :001_smile As to the cigarettes- yeah, I need to get away from them. $35 a week will build a nice collection of good tobacco.
