All the Captain Black stuff is like that...it takes a lot of drying and gets really goopy. It wouldn't hurt to mix in some dry straight baccy like PA or H&H or something.

I've only had two bowls of this but I found the cubed to be much slower burning and somewhat sweeter... less chance of bite but really big on the palate. I'm going to continue experimenting with it. First bowl was more a broken flake.

How's that Jacknife Plug working out?

Not bad at all, but I need to smoke more before I can say too much... I think this is one of those blends that smokes differently depending on how you cut it up. On my first attempt I didn't put much thought into it & simply cut across the shorter face of a block before filling my pipe. I won't say it smoked badly, but the difference was immediately noticeable when I cut thin, longer flakes & rubbed them out. Much more balanced flavors from the start & it also burned more evenly. It produces a good amount of smoke, which I like. I tasted smokey, dark & earthy undertones with a little sweetness. It is quite bold, but not overpowering & paired well with tea. I would say it has a medium to high nicotine level. I can see myself smoking this on occasion & some time in the tin may also help to smooth it out...

Tonight's pipe was, and still is for just a tiny bit longer, Pease Embarcadero in a Van Roy Arista bulldog. I don't much like this pipe but it's what I have handy.

I don't like this tobacco nearly as much as Laurel Heights. This has some orientals but the blend is predominately VA. That's not a bad thing but this bowl was a bit boring.

77Plymouth
02-16-2011, 07:46 AM
Embarcadero is clearly tangy. I didn't like what I tried of it last year, leaving the tin unfinished. So many variations in the Pease make for confusing slight variations of things that seem unnecessary (does there really need to be 7,562 varieties of Virginia in the C&D??)...

My attitude is, at the shows, I try a couple new Pease/C&D things, purchase 1 or 2 tins, then that's it.

Decided to try pure tobacco for once, so --with a bit of trepidation-- I bought a tin of Germain's Brown Flake and got out my trusty clay tester this morning.

Terrific, starts off mild and develops more flavour as the bowl goes down. I usually smoke aromatics, cured with various stuff and this was a real eye opener. I tried it also rolled up in paper (hemp, actually) and a co-worker tried it in paper as well. Other than looking suspiciously like a giant doobie, it went very very well.

Now, I just wish (on this cold, snowy, blowing day) I could stoke up in the office.

Best,

- John

Peterson bulldog filled with some old tobacco that had been hanging in the barn for 3 yrs. I think is was called 5 Brothers. :w00t: OMG, seriously?

Reminded me of when I was 14 and my cousin and I carved a couple corn cobs, went down to the barn and filled or own with some washed and dried raw leaf.

OK, not that bad, I will try again a few more times. SG XX took a while for me to get it. I'm not ready to give up yet.

Not a bad description really. This about as strait forward a tobacco with punch as your likely to find. No PG, no flavorings, no nothin. It will burn at about the speed of light too, slowing it down will add some flavor to it. I do like it on its own and is about the only tobacco I will hydrate, bourbon is great for this. I really like it for beefing up some burly based blends that are just too light for me otherwise.

Or you could always go king country on it, mix a drop of molasses with some of pappy's corn squeezins and toss in the tobacco. Chew it in the mornin' dry it on the porch rail in the afternoon, shove 'er in a cob and smoke it in the evening. That's economy boy's:w00t:

Edit: I'm not claiming the chew/dry/smoke thing is actually good, just that its been done. LOL

I'm smoking some aged Virginia flake in a Stanwell billiard tonight... This tobacco was gifted to me by a friend & long-time pipe smoker who had the foresight to stash away many of his favorites before they disappeared... I will chat with him later this week & see if I can find out more info on this mystery flake. The flavors initially were strong with sweet virginias that were full, smooth, & on a completely new level compared to anything else I have smoked. I don't have very broad experience with aged tobacco, but it seems to me that they produce a great amount of mouth-coating smoke... This one is no exception. I'm nearly half way through the bowl now & beginning to think there is something else in the mix here. Possibly some orientals, perique, or just some natural spiciness to the Virginia? Either way, this stuff is tasty & I'm off to enjoy!

No more Irish flake in the truck. Really nasty room note. I lit this thing in the truck before going out on my walk and when I returned it just absolutely reeked in here like a wet dirty ashtray. I'm trying to air it out now. Might need to spray a little Febreeze.

I think I may have ruined mine by over hydrating it when it dried out. At least temporarily anyway. I hope it recovers when the moisture returns to normal. I shouldn't have to mix it with something else.

Well there you go... cheating. Anyway, I have tried some of the techniques from the corn cob primer on Pipedia and it has really improved my MM experiences. Getting the bottom of the bowl right takes a little work, but seems to improve the quality of the last few puffs.

Since my wife sold most of my pipes during several years of inactivity, Missouri Meerschaums have been my primary pipes. I have one carved meerschaum that I have had for about 25 years, but it doesn't smoke as well as I would like as the stem opening is too small.

Walnut in a cob. It's the best of all the drug store blends I've tried by far. Primarily burley but there are some hints of oriental and/or latakia. No goop, very subtly sweet, and a much richer smoke. That said, I prefer almost any of my other non-drugstore leaves to this. It would work nicely in a pinch.

I have a Turkey Rare Breed on just a tiny rock on hand and they go very well together. Deep and thoughtful with a wonderful aftertaste. A touch of natural sweetness and a bit of perique spiciness. I had a second bowl last night. It was Ashton Gold Rush (the person who sent it to me had it labeled as Peterson) in a cob. Sweet and tasty and only mildly aromatic.

This afternoon's bowl was McClelland's 5100 Red Cake. Contrary to the name, it is sold fully rubbed out. It was a solid slow smoke, heavy with matured VA. I smoked this in a very interesting pipe that I got fon ebay. It was an unsmoked, very small dublin with some carving on the bowl. Screw in stem w/ a stinger that I removed. Very nice third of a bowl or so. Smoked easily all the way down with no dottle to speak of.

I'll let the seller's words tell the story:

A while back I bought a bunch of pipes from a man who said they were the leftover pipes from a pipe shop that closed 40 years ago.

Among them were a bunch of unsmoked pipes stamped only "Imported Briar" that looked like they had been the store's basket pipes.

They have been laying in a box for the last four decades simply curing well beyond the state they were in when they were made. The result is that they are extremely light, even for their smaller size, attesting to the excellent curing of the briar that has taken place over the intervening years.

There are no markings whatsoever on these pipes other than the "Imported Briar" that tells us they were most likely American made. They have screw-in stems with aluminum fittings, including a drinkless mechanism of the era. The pipe can be smoked with or without the drinkless mechanism.

G&H chocolate flake in a SMS paneled bent Rhodesian meer this afternoon, and C&D Bow Legged Bear in a cob puttering around the house. I was introduced to the Bear through a sample sent by a friend who thought I might like it. It is an unusual smoke. I had someone ask me exactly what tobaccos were in this blend and I truthfully replied, "all of them, I think". The first time I had it I thought it wanted to bite but it soon settled down to a malty sort of sweetness with the Latakia making itself obvious and didn't bite at all. It packs a strong punch which makes for a satisfying smoke even in a smaller bowl. It does just fine in a briar but really is at its best in a cob or meer, and its easy burning characteristics make it a prime candidate for a shop smoke. The sample had a few rough edges but I liked it well enough to get a half pound. The 8oz tin had about 8 months on it, and those rough edges had rounded off significantly. So I'd say giving it a bit of time is worth while and knowing this I probably be reordering by the pound. Thanks Vlad

I'm a little late on the POTM tobaccos, gentleman. I don't have any Peterson's to indulge in this month. But I did recently get some drug store blend samples, and they're better than I expected. Carter Hall and H&H were smokable, and though they smelled like the cheap aromatics I started pipe-smoking with (and nearly quit), they tasted ok and I didn't experience any tongue bite.

Worst case scenario, I could get by on this stuff.

Crazy evening with the local pipe club. I tried a McClelland VA that is yet unnamed (superior stuff). I had my first bowl of Penzance from a damaged tin that was pretty old and dry. I now have samples of some 30+ year old Prince Albert, Old Gowrie, and Robert Lewis Orcilla Mixture.

Very cool. :thumbup1: What's the story on the McClelland?

Turns out that on of the regulars at this pipe shop's monthly get together is a very famous pipemaker, tobacco blender, and cigar maker named Mike Butera. He's not really in the business anymore but he has a crazy stash. He is friends with the McClellands folks and they send him prototypes and such. He had a bag of this stuff that he shared with the group. It was either a flake or a broken flake (I don't recall). It had no toppings or anything. It was a straight, unmolested VA and it was delicious!

I will. I missed most of it but he explained why Pelican is gone for good. Thank $DEITY that Kingfisher doesn't seem to be in danger.

Irish Flake in a Kaywoddie Bulldog and a Johnnie Walker Black with ice. All while watching a hail storm ding up my favorite smoking-on-the-porch chair. Boooooo hail storms. I just repainted that chair.

This evening's pipe was my funky Paronelli filled with Robert Lewis Orcilla Mixture. The leaf was a bit over dry but the smoke was very nice. I do love the orientals! Too bad I only have two bowls worth. I'll have to pick some up down the road.

You're right! :thumbdown Better make it a two-bowl day. Embarcadero kind of knocks me on my butt, so I'm going with Presbyterian Mixture.

This morning I had my first bowl of 3 Nuns - I stacked about 6 coins in my 999 Spigot and broke one more up and sprinkled it on top. All I can say is I think I let a genie out of the bottle with this one, it was fantastic. It smoked all the way to the bottom and it was sweeet.

That stuff ages beautifully too, divide it up and date it. There are some tobaccos that I buy with a certain percentage set aside, thats one of 'em.

I haven't posted here recently because I've been getting over a head cold but I had some Irish flake in my Pete Sterling Silver 338.

I've put just over 3/4 of it into storage mode. I pulled some out so that I don't have to open the tin or two of that I have.

After one bowl, I'll tell you that I like it way more than Irish Flake. Irish Flake has so much burley (and therefore nic) that it puts me down. FVF has more VA flavor and much less nic.

The Irish flake is a heavy hitter to be sure, but that's what I like about it. The FVF does have great flavor, just a great all around smoke; pleasant natural aroma, easy progression of flavor through the bowl, and excellent long term potential. Not one I can smoke with my mind on my supper though, I have to sip it slowly to get the most out of the flavor.

Is it just me, or does that stuff deliver a significant dose of vitamin N?
