the interesting thing about the Bartlett upside-down pipe is, you unscrew the cap to pack the baccy, then re-screw the cap and lgiht from underneath through the screen.
alas, you can't tamp the tobacco, and its' not a great smoker by any menas but certainly is a neat novelty piece :)
That's "interesting", does it drop ash all over?

I've never even heard of it. That is pretty cool though. If there was a way to tamp it you think it would smoke good?

that's what the mesh wiring is for on the bottom. it keeps the ash in the pipe and allows you to light from the bottom
again, the design flaw is that you cannot tamp it... and, alas, earth's gravity isn't sufficient to self tap the tobacco
suppose one can smack it against one's palm to 'tamp' it... it's more of a novelty piece for me.
certainly a neat pipe though!!

I'm sure it would. the briar is decent (very light w/o the metal cap screwed on) but next time you smoke a pipe experiment by not tamping it at all. that'll give you an idea of this pipe's smoking character after 10 -15 minutes of slow puffing
next time I smoke it I'll try 'tamping it' by gently but firmly tapping the bottom against my palm - actually, now that I think of it I guess I could unscrew the top and simply tamp the tobacco itself.... never thought of that!!!)
I would also imagine that if one did smoke it regularly it would get tar build up along the sides - got this one used on ebay 15 years ago or so and it needed a decent cleaning then

It's not bad, it is very small, good for a 10-15 minute smoke, makes a good flake pipe IMO, these sell new for under $15 bucks as you probably already know.

Marlin Flake in 1/4 bent Kirsten. I have found a slightly tighter pack, slightly firmer tamping and the thing stays lit quite nicely. I also found even slow sips gives quite a bit more smoke volume than other pipes, which does seem to make a given amount of pipe weed to last not as long. I don't find it to smoke any hotter tho. All in all I am happy, and would buy a new one if I could.

Just enjoyed my first Squadron Leader in a few days. On Thursday, I went in to get my remaining top teeth extracted. Unfortunately, they noted that my gum line juts out, then back in, due to the bone. You cannot achieve a good seal like that. So, they had to split the gums open, and use something that looked like side cutters to cut the bone, then file it smooth. It is quite unnerving to hear your jaw bone crunching. I was feeling good today, so I just had half a bowl.

Had a bowl of Dunhill My Mixture 965 in a Dr. Grabow Omega, while my twin brother had a bowl of a custom blended VaPer in a Dr. Grabow Freehand.
The Dunhill 965 is a very nice blend to me; it has a nice flavor, a very nice aroma and it burns bery well, not too hot. My twin brother doesn't like it though, he literally had his nose out of joint saying "it smells like flowery, perfumed, soap!" ROFLMYAO, that is just too cold blooded!
The custom blended VaPer my twin brother had was nice too, it had a slightly fruity aroma with notes of chocolate and leather. The aroma was pretty salty smelling to me though. He went inside for a minute and while he was gone I took a drag of his pipe. It was a little mild for me but still not too bad; I prefer my Dunhill My Mixture 965.

Squeezed in a bowl of Frog Morton in an Oldenknott Patras that I recently acquired on the 'bay. I cleaned the bowl thoroughly and then bleached and polished the stem.
I know that these are considered cheap pipes, but the draw on this little pipe was effortless and I think that it will be my "quick smoke" pipe.
The before follows, I will try to find the camera (likely in one of the kid's room) and get an after at some point

My first VAPer with Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake in my MM Diplomat. I like this one, but there was a short period of bite. Excited to try Orlick Golden Slices, and GH Balkan. Flakes always stick out of my bowl an extra half inch with the fold and stuff method. What's a good size of bowl depth for flakes? I'm definitely looking at a Peterson system pipe, but would love it if I could fold and stuff flakes with ease.
Probably going to have a bowl of Nightcap before bed, though. Is Nightcap the best in its genre? Would the GH Balkan be similar, and if I really liked the Nightcap what would be some recommendations? It's not just the latakia that I like about it either, as I'm assuming latakia is the smokey component.

I like flakes in my smaller pipes, nothing wrong with tearing them in half and rubbing out a little 'kindling' to top off the bowl. And fakes come in so many different sizes that a pipe that fits one particular flake perfectly will likely be either too large or too small with another. Better just to find a pipe that smokes them well a fit the flake to it.
You are correct in that latakia is what adds the smokey component, as far as best it will depend on who you ask. My favorite Dunhill currently produced is 965. My favorite of the genre is probably squadron leader although the lighter latakia proportions and excellent VA of SG Navy Flake is one of those blends I'll never be without but is often not classified as a typical English.
thanks

Good advice on flakes. The only two flakes I've really had experience with so far are University Flake and now LNF. They both seemed about the same size, but I'm sure as I explore them I'll discover a lot more variations.
I will definitely give 965 a try, as looking at tobaccoreviews.com it seems right up my alley. As for SG, I'm afraid to try any as they seem almost impossible to get the majority of the time. I will probably start buying them as I do see some places have a lot in stock currently, but when I was looking a year ago they never seemed to stay in stock anywhere. I am very interested in Suadron Leader and FVF.

My twin brother and I just finished another pipe debate Hehehehe :biggrin1:
I had a bowl of Sutliff Private Stock Blend No. 5 in a Dr. Grabow Omega while my twin brother had Mac Baren HH Mature Virginia and HH Vintage Syrian; a pinch of Mature Virginia and two pinches of Vintage Syrian.
I like the Blend No. 5, it cannot compare but the Dunhill My Mixture 965 but if you don't have 965 around Blend No. 5 is a descent replacement. The black cavendish is quite nice in this blend and the blend has a nice flavor overall. My twin brother kept saying "I HATE cavendish!" the whole time we were smoking our pipes this afternoon.
My brothers pipe wasn't too bad; he likes to call the blend VaLat, it was nice in its own right. It had alternating flavors of leather and sweet spices and chocolate and fruity flavors; like peach or apricot. Still I will stick to the Blend No. 5 if I don't have any Dunhill 965 on-hand.

My twin brother and I just finished enjoying our pipes again,
I had a bowl of Grant's Macon Supreme in a Big Ben Banker, while my brother had a bowl of Grant's Roanoake in an Army push-bit from the Czech Republic.
The Macon Supreme is a very nice blend with pleanty of cavendish and a nice vanilla and cherry flavor to it. The vanilla dominates the blend with the cherry popping in every now and then. The perique provides a nice contrast to the blend giving it a touch of spice.
The Roanoake is alright, I took a few drags on my brothers pipe; as usual, and it has an alright flavor. It can be a little bitter at times for me, but my twin brother seems to love it. It has a nice aroma with nice fruit notes and it burns a little faster than the Macon Supreme.
All the while my brother was stating how he really hates cavendish, but I love blends with a descent amount of cavendish.

Smoking a bowl of C&D Kajun Kake from a sample sent to me in a trade, wow, this is a "in your face smoke" it consists of Cavendish, Red Virginia and Perique, too much Perique for my taste, a good mix of sweet and spicy if you like that sort of thing, smoking it in a rustic Savinelli 320 KS.

So my twin brother and I ended the day smoking pipes,
I enjoyed a bowl of Peter Stokkebye English Oriental Supreme in a dark lacquered pot from Italy and my twin brother had a custom bleded aromatic which I am calling "The Candy Factory" Hehehehe! It is an all Mac Baren aromatic blend of Black Ambrosia, Cherry Ambrosia, Honey & Chocolate and Vanilla Cream; whoa that's a mouthful! LOL!!
My English Oriental Supreme was a very nice ending to a very hectic day. It is very nice and creamy with just a touch of latakia and a solid foundation of cavendish which was just awesome. It provided a creamy, sweet and spicy treat which I find very appealing. My twin brother kept complaining about "flowery, perfumy soap" and acting as if it was making him nauseous, Hehehehe!
My twin brothers aromatic was super sweet with the aroma, it literally smelled like a candy store filled with tootsie rolls, jelly beans and toffe apples! LOL!! I took a few puffs of it and the cavendish is very mild; almost non-existent but still present, and the flavor was very sweet but still pretty good. It was a little too sweet for my taste, honestly if anything is sweeter than Captain Black Royal, that is just too sweet for me! LOL!!
thanks

Had a bowl of Orlick Golden Slice in my corn cob to relax after work. I like it more than the Stokkebye luxury navy flake, but they're so different even though they're both VaPers. I do like it, although it really doesn't get much use. I mainly use matches when I'm at home (where the overwhelming majority of my smoke time occurs), but I use the lighter if I have to relight toward the bottom of the bowl, and I take it with me if I'm smoking elsewhere. I really like the Old Boy styling, minus the Old Boy price (I really don't need a sterling silver lighter, after all), and Xikar's warranty is tough to beat. I've got several of their products (a couple lighters, a couple cigar cutters, and a set of steak knives), and I couldn't recommend them higher.

The use of cavendish in a 'English' mixture is a hallmark of Scottish blends. While the brown cavendish employed by Dunhill is unique, you might look into scotch blends by Rattray and G&H for variations on the theme.

How was the churchwarden stem in the cob? Did it give you a good smoke?
Broke in my new walker diplomat cob last night with a churchwarden stem with a half bowl or two Peterson Irish Whiskey and some Know Creek Rye. And for about 40 minutes, all was right in the world...

PS Luxury Navy Flake in my MM Diplomat. Chalk my first experience with this tobacco up to inexperience. Smoked cool, long, and absolutely delicious. Loved every minute of it, even if it was pretty one dimensional throughout the bowl. The price is great, and I'm glad I already picked up 4oz. blind. I see a large box of this in my future...

A nice virginia burley blend, it has a nice spicy aroma and not too much flavor other than sweet tobacco. The virginia and burley compliment each other very well.

You should McClelland's 925 (nine to five) blend a try, it's there DH 965 match blend and a darn good one IMO, not to mention it is available in bulk and much less expensive.

Berry Nice and Vanilla Custard made buy pipesandcigars in the Falcon. Vanilla custard is fine for a vanilla aro i guess.
Think I always have high hopes for them and get let down. Probably going to stop trying vanilla tobacco at this point.
Berry Nice on the other hand is about the most flavorful and amazing smelling aro I've ever smoked. It gunked up the Falcon pretty good, but metal pipes get a little gunk in there even when you smoke an english blend. The taste/smell of berries would stick around in my mouth when I put the pipe down for a minute also. The tobacco flavor gets covered up by the casing/topping almost completely, gonna try a half and half with this and an english blend and see if that gives me some tobacco flavor but keeps the same room note that the GF likes. It feels sticky putting it in the pipe so I guess it is cased more heavily than Boswell's raspberry creme or berry cobbler. Gonna have some more after work and decide whether I should buy more or not, leaning towards buying more of it with my next pipesandcigars order. (which is not going to be until October if I can keep to my plan of smoking some of the stuff I don't want to refil and reclaim some mason jars....)

This is an awesome Calabash pipe, I love the extra long stem.
Had a bowl of Super Value Black & Gold Cavendish in a 9mm Sitter pipe.
Many people really give this blend a nad wrap but I really like the blend. It has a naturally sweet flavor and aroma to it and has literally no bite at all. I really like the blend but it lacks that classic cavendish signature flavor; if you know what I mean.

Natural Cavendish was the first pipe tobacco I ever smoked. I haven't had it for years but it is everything I remember about, I love Natural Cavendish! This particular blend doesn't have that signature cavendish flavor, but it is still very nice and naturally sweet.

Orlick Golden Sliced in a cob. I think I didn't let this dry enough this time, because this bit me like a rabid dog. I didn't puff too fast either, as I tried timing it to where it would almost go out. Another beginners lesson learned.

Just bought a new Amadeus Army Push-bit Churchwarden from the local smoke shop; Ye Ole Briar Shoppe and loaded it with one of the house blends called "Hole In One". A nice natural cavendish blend with a naturally sweet flavor and a creamy, leathery aroma, almost as if the blends consists of sweet virginia, burley and natural cavendish.

Not a bad smoker, the bowl gave me a bit of greif when I first tried to smoke it. After I got the tobacco lit, the bowl completely stopped smoking and was impossible to drag; almost as if it were plugged! I removed the stem and put my pipe tool through the shank and it openined right up. Bits of the brian went into my mouth when I put the stem back on and started smoking it again. But now, its a wonderful smoker!
