Hi,

I'm new, and wanted to say hello to everyone.
This is my second post, as I was really motivated to join for some specific help regarding strops.
I took up straight razor shaving this year, and hope to acquire as needed vs as desired, but we'll see how that goes.

Right now I use Proraso preshave, Proraso shave soap, and Kanwa aftershave lotion. I used a bar of Col Conk Bay Rum, and really like the lather and the smell, but it didn't treat me nearly as kindly as the Proraso.

I've got a Dovo 6/8 full hollow, and a Wester Bro.'s Manganese 4/8. They are completely different animals. I really like the 4/8, but it needs to be very sharp to work well for me, and I feel like it loses its hone faster. Maybe that is just a trick of the mind since it is so much smaller.

My brushes are a Vulfix travel brush and a basic Rooney (that I should have never bought).

My strop is a 3" wide Latigo with a polyester separate strop. The polyester (seat belt) seems to only do me wrong when I try to use it. If anyone has had luck with one of these polyester strops (non-pasted), please fill me in on how to make some use of it.
The Latigo, I am very happy with sometimes, and sometimes very confused. I can't seem get consistent results with it. Also, the middle of the blade never seems to hone as well as the ends, and I assume this was from the fact that I was mostly stropping straight instead of in the X pattern. I have been trying to develop a good X-pattern technique, but am disappointed in that the intention behind buying the 3" (more expensive) strop was to be able to simplify this task (I.e., no X-pattern necessary). It seems that the leather will not stay flat for long (whether it ever was), so I don't see how not using the X-pattern was really ever an option.

My other interests are the outdoors, from surf to the slopes, and cooking.

If I can help find some info that may help everyone else' posts from time to time, I will do so.

Thanks, and happy to meet everyone as it happens.

Welcome to B&B!

a 3" strop doesn't require X stropping. Your strop should be larger than the blade. Also, if your strop is cupping, you would need to flatten it first so the edge has full contact while stropping.
