View Full Version : Post your Slant

Well, title says all. There are a few threads in the Straight Razor section where gents post their gear accordingly (i.e. Japanese Straight razors, Sheffield, etc).

I thought it would be interesting to do the same type of activity in this forum. So, you got a slant? Please post it, you know which slant it is? Please post that information too!

I do not own any but I'm curious to see what everyone have! :thumbup1:

Yup, changed the title, Gillette did make a slant, I don't think they pop very often but re-thinking about it, any slant will do!

From left to right: Zaiss Neo-Lux; unbranded German bakelite open comb slant (missing a corner tooth on each side from a dive off the counter, but doesn't effect the shave); vintage Merkur Slant (came in a silver case that's not pictured here).

It's called a "Slant Stroke" under U.S. patent 2093851, but the blade looks completely even:001_huh:

Nothing too spectacular. A vintage model in some type of plastic case along with a modern HD and Barberpole version -- all Merkur.

It was on eBay about a month ago. I found it by searching for "Germany Razor" (which I do because there are a few different slants and other kind of odd razors that show up occasionally with that search). I was kind of surprised that I was the only one who bid on it.

And agreed, although I'm actually a little relieved this season is over.

OK. Now I am confused. I thought a 'slant' was like the two on the right; where the blade is 'twisted' to provide a shearing stroke with a straight pull. So the Zaiss Neo-Lux is also considered a slant? I guess it would give a shearing stroke while pulling the handle straight. But then a Fat Boy whill produce a shearing stoke if I hold the handle at an angle and pull it down maintaining the angle.

The Zaiss is basically a regular/normal head mounted at an angle to the handle?

I have shaved with all of them except the Hoffritz. I bought it for 26 dollars from the bay a few years ago before the Hoffritz-hype started. It came in the original case and looks like it was used only one or two times before I bought it. The set contained a original Hoffritz blade also. Has someone informations, how many blades these sets came with? I assume two blades, maybe ten in the blade holder? Thanks.

Nicked the picture from gentlemans-shop.com, but yep, it's a Merkur 39c.

My first shave with it was so-so. No cut, but a little burn. I'll have to try it with the Feather blade soon.

Sorry it took me a while to see this. Yes, the Zaiss is more or less a normal head just mounted at a rather extreme angle. It's a bakelite head which produces a rather extreme blade gap (which means you can bite the heck out of yourself with it if you aren't careful).

I've seen Zaiss's referred to in the slant threads before, so I decided to include it here. It does give you a shearing angle without having to contort your arm around or trying to hold an awkward angle like you would need to with a standard razor.

Starting at 12 and clockwise: Gold vintage Merkur 37c, Hoffritz, BRW adapted Merkur head, slim handle Merkur 37c, German Bakelite (camera shy), Merkur 37c, Elite Razor 39c and the Punktal. The Elite handle is rattlesnake skin, unfortunately not Sidewinder, the Punktal is a 1930s German slant designed by a maker of primarily straights and the BRW is a completely redesigned 2 piece razor with a Bob's barrel and attachment knob paired with a Merkur head and cap. Looking for a couple of double slants to round out the stable.

The plating on the top cap is wearing thin, there are a couple of nicks on the side from being dropped in the sink and apparently Pop must have put a wet mug on top of the box leaving a water stain, but I like it that way.

Axel,
Bob made a 2 piece slant. The knob connects to the cap and the 37C or 39 head is affixed to the handle. Very solid feeling and of course the receptor the knob attaches too is made to slip in a narrower handle opening.
