View Full Version : SWMBOs First DE Shave

After showing a vague interest in DE shaving I bought SWMBO a Lady Gillette Blue from BST.

I agonised over Red Personna and Feather, finally deciding to load up with a Feather and telling her to take it easy (no pressure, WTG .....)

I then offered her a choice of soaps and showed her how to build up a good lather.

A few days later she came downstairs, pleased with her first shave. There was no blood loss and all seemed very good for a first attempt.

I then asked which soap she used. Answer ' oh, I didnt bother with soap, I just rubbed some shower gel in' :scared:

I then asked about how she'd gone about the shave. Answer 'I didnt apply any pressure, like you said, and just shaved like this ...'
One pass ATG (not as I suggested)

Is it womens legs or the lady Gillette ?
If I subjected myself to half of this I'd be patching my face up for days

To be fair, I always shave with one ATG pass. It's the easiest thing for us to do and our skin can generally take it just fine.
Back in my cartridge days I would often shave with shower gel too but I love a good lather now.
As for the feather- brave woman! I find them far too sharp and uncomfortable feeling for my liking but YMMV.

My wife did not like the Lady Gillette I bought her. She gave me the look like I deliberately did the damage to her. So I got her a Schick Lady Eversharp. She loves the injector.

It's frightening to watch my wife shave her legs, she goes on the attack! But a leg is not a face.

It sounds like us guys need to toughen up a bit on the skin front

Some rose soap and a brush are on my Christmas list for her

I love feathers!!! I have always shaved ATG and it is just what works best for me. I dont use gel or canned goo anymore though. If I have to shave quickly, I will use a cream and use is burshless. Glad she had a sucessful first shave though. Keep encouraging the use of good soap/creams, it does make a difference.

I'm female, and new to DE shaving, but it's one pass ATG for me, too. And I like sharp blades, feathers included.

Just a quick question ... when you showed SWMBO how to make lather, should I assume it was how to bowl lather? If so, I'd suggest teaching her about leg lathering. Once in a while, I'll bowl lather, but usually I leg lather. One she feels a decent brush on her legs and smells all the nice scents of the products, she just might be hooked!

My GF does one ATG pass too. Womens hair tends to be thinner and less coarse than mens facial hair so they can get away with a ATG pass with out all the irritation a man might get.

Yes, it was bowl lathering

It seems I have much to learn here with SWMBO shaving

Ive just realised that this could be the first hobby that we have a mutual interest in for quite some time

+ 100 on the leg lathering.
I almost never use a bowl. Just load up the soap or cream and lather straight ot the legs. If she likes the ease of just lathering shower gel on her legs then it sounds like she's a good candidate for leg lathering with a brush as it's just as quick but feel sooo much better

Have a read of this wiki me and some other members made, and made print it out for her to see too:

Seems to me bowl lathering to shave legs would be counter productive. I never really liked bowl lathering anyway. Since going to Proraso, I put an almond-sized dab on my wet brush and lather what I want to shave directly.

Legs aren't as sensitive as the face.

She wants convenience.

I had a go at this with my wife and it was intresting. She to found some intrest in shaving with a DE and not the cheapy disposables that she was using. I helped the 1st time and got a bit to close and took a layer or 2 of skin off her ankle. Otherwise she is on her own now and loving it. She to likes to leg lather over using a bowl...

Don't get your hopes up, odds are you're wife ISN'T going to consider shaving an interesting hobby. And even less chance that she'll be willing to talk about it in public!
