View Full Version : How to get rid of beard?
So, I've been away from the forum for a bit and will be for a little longer, until the end of the month. I've started to grow a bit of a beard, all part of a wider thing called Movember (http://uk.movember.com/) over here. It's all with the aim of growing a mo (moustache) in order to raise money for Prostate Cancer Research.
Trouble is, at the end of the month I'll have about 3 weeks' growth to get rid of, so I'm not sure if my straight razor will go through my (very) thick whiskers. Should I trim first with scissors or something electric or get it done with the straight immediately? Feel free to answer by voting in the poll!
I should mention that my facial hair is thicker than nylon wire and I currently have a short beard even after 10 days' of growth. It's as itchy as anything as my hairs are curly! I call it the "itchy and scratchy show" though :001_smile
Definitely get a hair clipper and bring it down to stubble...then shave. :001_smile

I got rid of my 1 year old handlebar with my 8/8 wedgy Wostenholm.
After second pass the mo was nothing but a memory :biggrin1:

Yup I would use a hair trimmer and knockout the beard. Then do your striaght/DE/SE shave.

I'd use a hair/ beard trimmer first then a straight.... thats how i shaved my head during police academy after the weekends and it worked great

Last year around this time I shaved off my beard, and I went at it with electric trimmers first. I used a DE after that, but boy it was a good shave.

Just shave! I get rid of my goatee once a year and all I use is an open comb DE. No problems at all. :thumbup1:

Here is a guy who uses a str8 to cut of his hair. I do not see why the same technique could not be used on the face for a months worth of beard. Be one with the blade and you should be fine. Sorry that it is in Spanish.

Shave it. I've shaved off two weeks growth before with a straight.
Just make sure it's damn sharp and use short, deliberate strokes.
The feeling you get after you finish that first pass is incredible!

use a straight, and just burn through that mo. like huntmol says - its an amazing feeling.

This is also how I do it, except that I use a de for shaving off the stubble.

Trim, one way or the other, says I. Make it easier on yourself!

A trimmer would be the best way to go, but I personally would just shave it. Shaving off my beard when it's nice and thick feels really good.

It's not like theres a guard bar or multiblades to clog up.
Mow, baby, mow! Straight razor only.

Depends on how much time you want to spend.
If i'm in a hurry i'm knocking it down first with my Norelco then a nice DE.
If time is no option fresh feather and have a go, knocked down a 2 month thick beard with 6 passes to get a BBS = 30 minute shave.

Very true! I've heard horror stories of people trying to hack at a month's growth with a multiblade toy or even a DE! :w00t:

Go for the straight, it's worth it.
If it's not gonna work you'll know pretty quickly and can resort to clippers or something like that.
A long hot bath, a lot of lather and a big bit of sharp metal.

This! No need to trim it down especially if you are using a nice sharp straight razor.
Well the beard came off yesterday using the straight. It went through it like a blow torch through soft margarine. You guys were right - that was one of the best shaves of my life!
Martin de Candre soaked into the beard thoroughly and a Le Grelot 1/4 grind were the perfect match!
