So, I've noticed on my Shavemac silver-tip and a TGN 2-band finest knot that, though the hair is nice and soft when the brush is wet, when it dries the hairs seem to clump together a bit at the tips in little groups. Is this just a sign of them needing a good deep clean, ya think? I don't have this problem with my Simpson in best, which is interesting.

A good cleaning certainly won't hurt. My guest would be gunk build up of some sort. Try a vinegar wash or mild borax solution.

+1 on the vinegar wash.
Do you rinse the brush out thoroughly and gently shake exes water out of it before you let it dry? You could be leaving to much product and or water in it.

I do. I'll give the vinegar wash a shot.
I was giving this thread (http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=109633) a read-through, and it doesn't seem like anything was eventually solved. Any thoughts from participants in that thread?

A wash in dish soap and a rinse in vinegar should eliminate the soap residue and ph balance causes of clumping.
I came across an article a couple of months ago that stated that washing/rinsing hair in water that was too warm (above 95 degrees farenheit) can lead to matting. The article didn't get into the science of the theory and I mention it only as a shot in the dark in case the vinegar rinse doesn't work.

Agree with the above posts, vinegar or borax to clean.
I noticed my brush did this really quickly when I regularly used preshave oil. After I stopped using the preshave oil my brush doesn't need to be cleaned nearly as often.
