Since acquiring a Gillette Fatboy; I decided to ask what blade between these 3 brands is recommended to try first & what number to start out on.
the 3 blades are: a Merkur blade, a Derby blade, or a Feather blade.
I was thinking 3 should be a safe setting to start with & a Derby blade.
Any opinions appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds good to me. You'll do fine with that setup.

3 would be a good start setting for the FB with either the Derby or Feather. I have FB and SB and use both blades. YMMV depending on your beard and shave prep. Can not help you with the Merkur blade, don't have any. Alot of gents adjust the settings during the course of their shave. From more aggressive to less as the go from passes with the grain, across and against.

I leave my Gilette Slim set on 3 when I shave. I find Feathers work best in it, too.

I have a feather in my FB,
It is set to 3 for stubble reduction, 7 or 9 for touch ups

For the first shave, I'd load a Derby. 3 should be a fine setting. If you feel the cut is not great enough, crank it up to 4. Just stay away from 9!

Merkur blades seem rough compared to Derby in my adjustable. Pay attention to how the blade feels on the skin. If you get irritation, go with lower numbers.
