View Full Version : Slant shave coming up.

I've been bragging about my sucessful shaves, no nicks scrapes, etc. I've learned how to go BBS with a Vision, Futur and Gillette's with no damage using Feather Blades.
I'm taking my new Slant out for a walk later this morning and I'm as nervous as a new bride. The exposure of the blade, when compared to all my other razors, makes me feel like I should just go ahead and use a single edge blade without a frame.
I'm going to sit back and watch Mark's, (Mantic's, still have the "T" Mark!), video several times, lol, with my first cup of the day and a decent bowl of tobacco to mentally get prep'ed for this new dive into DE shaving. I'll check back when able.

Go very gently and you will be fine, too much pressure and you will feel the burn :cool1:

What blades are using in your Slant? Godspeed on your Slant journey!

I get my worst shaves when I fear razor (or razor & blade combo) I am using. Slant with Feather is an aggressive combination compared to for example Hefty Classic, but as I see it, this aggressiveness is only relative kind of thing here - it doesn't mean you are about to wield some ancient torturing device. :001_smile
When I use my Slant, I let it slide almost on its own weight, unlike with my Futur that I have to lift a bit up.

Nothing to worry about Patrick. I find the Futur and Vision to be much more difficult to master than the slant. I really couldn't tell much difference between the slant and my HD. Sold it after around 5 shaves, but then I don't care for the short handles on the HD or slant. The long handle classic has spoiled me to where I don't even use my 40's superspeed any more.

I'm going to be starting using a Derby in it and progress to a Feather at some point in time.

But at one point I want to get my hands on a slant though!

Patrick,
Just relax and enjoy your shave! The slant-Derby combo is my personal zen.
Have a great shave!

For a first attempt I would not recommend a feather, Derby's, Israeli's, Tesco's or Gillettes would be a wiser choice. Also make sure the blade is aligned correctly before you screw down tight. There is often some play depending on the blade type. If it is slightly out of alignment it could bite. You are looking to align it slanted and not straighter. This may sound obvious but quite a few people have been unaware of this.

Dang, Patrick... where's your post about using the Slant? :001_rolle
It's been 3 hours since your first post. You can't still be drinking coffee, smoking your pipe, and watching Mark's YouTube videos?! You're probably stuck on the Cartoon Network... or, you're watching Rachael Ray?
Just havin' a little fun with ya!

For a first attempt I would not recommend a feather, ...
I received my Slant this Monday and popped in a fresh Feather right away. You think the Feathers are sharp in a HD, but they really show their character in the Slant.
Hope you're doing fine Patrick. My first experience with the Slant is that you have to be quite conservative an cannot just assume it's bit sharper HD. But it certainly is effective.

Are you ok?
I can't wait to actually try a slant myself!

 You know the Rocky film where he finally gets mad at Clubber Lang(sp) and as Clubber's hitting him, he's yelling, "Come on! You aint' so bad!" That's how it was with my first shave with the Slant. I used my baseline prep of Cremo and Tabac SS and took it really, really slow and easy on the entire first pass. Rinsed off, re-lathered and went cross grain everywhere. Did my usual touch up and I'm proud to say no damaged done and one heck of a smooth shave, BBS on my chin, which is the hardest area I have to deal with and requires "J" hooking Gillette Slide crop circles.
The Slant seems to be every bit a match for the Vision regarding closeness with the handling ability of a HD and Progress. It did do one thing better than any other DE razor, I was able to position the blade right up against the underside of my nose, and using little "flea flick" strokes got every hair there without having to resort to grabbing the Schick Injector, which has become the norm.
With a little practice and seeing how it performs down the road with a Feather blade, it could easily become a go to razor. Very nice piece of equipment!

+1 Just remember to take it easy and let the blade do the work, you will be fine.

All these posts and excellent reviews about the slant makes me slant-hungry! I'm not sure if I'll be able to sleep if I don't order this thing soon... :eek2:

The only DE I own is a slant and I love it. My shave with it is still better than my straight, but I am working on it. The slant is heavy enough that it does all the work, I just guide it.
Vince,
You will always wonder about the slant until you get one and try it. If you don't like it, you can always trade it. I say go for it!

Make sure you try it for at least two weeks of consistent use though, as the experience changes (positively) with time and practice. :)

Sounds like me when I got my slant. Seeing all that exposed blade at such an angle made me very nervous. I used a feather light touch and all was well. In fact, I had a BBS with 2 passes instead of the usual 3 passes with my HD. I had a couple of very small weepers because this razor will remove any raised spot on your skin (blemish, ingrown hair, old weeper, etc). I skipped a day and then had a perfect shave. Not to mention a face as smooth as a 10 year old....

The best DE razor by far is the Merkur Slant!!!! Enjoy

Your not kidding, I finished my third shave with a Derby X's 3 and I was BBS over 90%, I don't try for total smooth on the bottom half of my neck with any razor having paid the price for that in the past. This razor handles like an HD or Progress but acts like one of my Katanas when it comes to slicing even a two day growth off.
Get one and see for yourself.

Good move sir! I went with a Feather in mine for the first time today and I didn't need to go any farther than 2 passes and a little touch up. You won't be sorry you pulled the trigger, unless you forget the rules of course.
