Had my first shave with a shave stick last night.
Speick, to be specific.
I have no idea how I have avoided trying one of these things for so long!
Being new to their use, I followed the instructions in Joel's excellent tutorial (http://www.badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=40).
Superb results!
Easy to use, fantastic lather, and an excellent shave.

If you haven't tried a shaving stick yet, give it a shot!

Shave sticks are great shaving soaps. As you properly pointed out, they are very easy to use and can give excellent results. Speick stick, in particular, is one of the very best. Other outstanding sticks are Valobra, Irisch Moos, Palmolive and La Toja. My absolute favourite is Valobra.:thumbup1:

Shave sticks and creams are the only things I buy now. I have a puck of MWF and cut it into fours and use each pizza looking slice like a shave stick, much better lather.

Shave sticks are great! Love them!

Ok, guys - I need some advice.
What do you do with the foil on your Speick shaving stick?

Do you peel it all off and throw it away?
Do you unwrap and wrap the foil each time you use it?
I've only had mine a short while and already the foil at the top is starting to tear...

Today I used a shave stick for the first time too! I couldn't believe how easy it was to build lather. I used the Irisch Moos soap stick and it has a cap which is more practical than foil.

I just tear off as I go, leaving about 1/2 inch of the soap exposed. If you find a large glue stick container it will almost fit perfectly in it.

I also tear the foil as I go.
Sticks are so easy to use and store.
Some that I use in my rotation are:

Speick (love the scent and lather)

Valobra (super slick lather)

Irisch Moos (tabac with a different scent)

La Toja (reminds me of the ocean)

Wilkinson Sword (tallow, glycerin, and lanonlin. What more could you ask for)

Palmolive (one of the great inexpensive shave products)

Erasmic (love the old time barbershop scent and superb lather)

Irisch Moos (tabac with a better scent)

Don't know as I agree with that. I think that Tabac smell better but IM gives a better lather.

For me they are both very easy to lather, we have soft water, and I always get great lather when using either one. But, I have never actually looked to see if the ingredients are the same.

I use to love the scent of Tabac but now I like the scent of Moos. I change my original post, I should have said (tabac with a different scent).

I have always used shave sticks. Even when I use a soap I have been given at Christmas, I still use it like a shave stick.

If you want to try others, I recommend Palmolive and Arko sticks.

I peel what I need.

I had delusions of being able to take a vacation this year, so I bought a bay rum shave stick from Prarie Creations for travel. I finally started using it and the results are amazing. Technique is almost a total nonissue. Rubbing the stick directly on the face is especially useful for the very hard to shave areas right under my chin and jaw bone.

QED shave sticks (QEDman) in Fresh Lime or Pine & Cedarwood

MMMmmmmmmmmm.....

Great stuff!

(no foils to mess with, just a nice twist up tube.)

I personally don't like shave sticks very much. I always end up with soap or lather on my hands they're messy. I would much prefer to have a puck of Speick instead of the stick.

How are you using them?

I just rub the shave stick on my face and then face lather like normal.

That's what I do. For some reason I always end up with big chunks of cream when I use that method. I'll be shaving my chin and then bangg I get a big chunk of dry lather.

I use an x-acto knife to cut a neat ring of foil off.

Try lathering more, maybe use a little less soap to your face or try and add more water to your brush. What shave stick do you use, I never get chunks of soap?

Ok, but what about for travel use? I'd love to keep one of these in my Dopp kit.

Do I just throw it in there? Put it in a Ziploc bag?

(sorry for the newbie questions, never had a shaving stick before - all my other soaps come in their own containers!)

I have three, Palmolive, Irish Moos and Speick. I think I would use the IM a lot more if it was in a puck like my puck of Tabac.

When I'm at home I usually just leave the stick in my cabinet. When I'm travelling, I'll usually go with something with a nice lid.

I lot of folks use a prescription pill bottle with holes drilled in the lid, then there are the vintage metal shave stick containers, or some sticks come in self contained, well, containers (e.g., La Toja or QED)

Happy to help! If you don't mind having something that says glue on it in the den, that's fine...

Would agree with everything on that except erasmic, got one of the reformulated sticks and it was rubbish, however I understand that erasmic has gone back to producing shave sticks with tallow, so I'll have to try a "deformulated one".

Yes indeed, I have been on the shave stick band wagon for some time with Palmolive and add others here and there.

I strip back by about an inch of the foil when I use my Palmolive/Mennen shaving sticks.
On one occasion I tried slicing up the sticks and microwaving the bits to form a puck. This wasn't a very happy or successful experience as it all frothed up and went everywhere. It took ages to clean the microwave and for a while thereafter things cooked in it had a certain strange piquancy. I think there must be a moral there.

Good day.
The Palmolive stick I use almost exclusively because it is simply very good forth of its properties.
The application is very simple and straightforward - simply rub on wet skin and then lather with the shaving brush too wet in the face.
From time to time also comes to the SIM, or Arko Gibbs application.
What they should do all three - and at a very affordable price here in Germany.

Greetings

Andreas
