View Full Version : Classic Shaving Scents You Can't Stand

I'm curious if there are classic shaving related scents that you gents just can't stand. I'm not talking about solo products lines like Tabac or scents that you're very particular about (for me it's sandalwood, very few make it into the permanent rotation) but rather a classic scent that you despise in all it's forms. Sandalwood, rose, lavender, citrus, etc.

For me it's almond. I don't know why but I absolutely can not stand almond scented shaving products. I like almonds but I hate the fragrance transition. It really bothers me too because I miss out on a lot of great shaving products, especially fine Italian products like Acca Kappa, P.160, and Cella.

So let's hear it guys...

+1 the Almond scent!! I got piffed a tub of Cella... Absolutely without a doubt LOVED the lather!!! Smell make my stomach turn!! Got rid of it after 3 shaves!

For the longest time I could never find a sandalwood scent I liked. Thankfully, that has changed!

It also took a while for me to warm up to lavender and vetiver. Here again, over time I've learned to appreciate both.

I agree with distaste of the Almond Scent. Love to eat them, hate the taste in alchohol or the scent applied to shaving cream.

Not much for Sandalwood either. Although there is a very wide range from subtle to overpowering depending on brand and subtle is ok with me.

Almond, but I've only ever tried T&H's almond cream. Seemed like I was applying some kind of dessert to my face, yuck.

I dont like Rose. It's bad to my schnoz.

It reminds me of an assisted living home. I guess you could add lilac vegetol to get that "cat lady" vibe.
Seems like Rose is a similar scent wherever you go. Not true for Sandalwood imho. Taylors Sandalwood smells synthetic, C&E Sandalwood is the exact opposite. It smells amazing.

Citrus can be great (QED) or it can smell like you're wearing candy (Pinaud).

+1. I sniffed a tub of Trumper's rose and almost gagged. Sickly sweet and way too "old lady". I'm not crazy about any of the pure floral scents, but rose is the worst to me.

Almond.

I liked the scent of AOS Sandalwood dry, buy when I lather it up I can't stand it.

It's the only Sandalwood I've tried though

I like them all - in moderation. I think I would grow to dislike my favorite GFT Coconut soap if I had to use it every day for a couple of weeks.

You'll love it! I have had mine in a The Body Shop tin since February, and I noticed recently that it has lost some of its scent compared to an unused puck I have. I wonder if you can preserve that scent longer with another storage technique. Sorry for the OT post!

I've got a nice wooden bowl with a lid ready to go when it gets here

But yeah, about scents we hate and all

good lead off with almond.
Cella is the worst. I can't stand it.
I've never been fond of TOBS avacado either.
It's good cream, but I don't like the smell.

I really can't stand almond. Yech! It just smells sickly sweet to me.

I'm not a fan of violet, either, but I'm not sure that's a "classic" scent.

Did I mention I really dislike almond?

Lemon. I admit that i haven't tried them all, but what I have tried reminds me of Lemon Pledge. Dernit.

Another wote for almond.
It's just something weird about it.
And Erasmic soap, I like the cream, but the soap smells like those toilet tablets

Anything rose. Smells like an 80's bathroom deodorizer spray.

English leather. Smells like burnt hair and Ghandi's sandal.

I haven't yet come across a shaving scent I don't like.

I was about to post this, but then I realized that there is one I quite disliked: Ogallala's Bay Rum, Sage, and Cedarwood. I got a sample of it included in an order I put in at an online vendor. Took one sniff and found it revolting. It's the only Bay Rum product that I've sniffed, so I'm on the fence as to whether I should give Bay Rum another chance, or just avoid it altogether.

Other than that, though, I've yet to find a scent I truly dislike in a shaving product.

Bay Rum. Not for me at all. I wanted to like it sooooo bad because of the history of the scent and the fact that rum is my drink of choice. But I hate it.

Lavender...I despise it with a bloody awful passion.
Patchouli too. :biggrin1:

Despite the quality of the cream involved, rose or lavander is something I avoid.

Almond and Rose for me. Rose especially, it makes me sneeze. I also don't care for the scent of Amber in colognes.

Tabac. Smells like cheap, overpowering, scuzzy old man to me. YMMV. :thumbup1:

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that dislikes Bay Rum. I was worried that I was hiding a deep, terrible secret.
I am also not fond of lavander.

You're not alone. I'm on the fence with it myself. I haven't found one I like yet but I haven't tried enough. I don't feel like I've given it a fair shake yet.

Vetiver smells like a cross between burning chicken feathers and old sweat socks.

Menthol, anything with menthol. I guess it goes back to the dark ages when I used to smoke. I could never stand Kool cigarettes.

Well, that's what makes a horserace. I can't stand sandalwood, patchouli (reminds me of how a lot of the hippie chicks in the early 70s smelled after burning incense in their house all day), or any of the florals. But I like bay rum, almond, and my favorites are the citrus. Currently shaving on a puck of Trumpers West Indies Lime that I love more each day.

Although I don't shave with it, I really like the smell of Williams :w00t: and every now and then I'll buy a puck for the shower.

I am a little surprised by the dislikes here. :001_huh:You probably shouldn't be. Smell is as subjective as anything else in the YMMV canon. I know we're talking shaving soap scents here, but I have seen fragrances bought and sold on the B/S/T and think to myself, if that guy came and sat next to me at some event, I'd probably have to change seats. I don't have a very good tolerance for some scents.

Scent is often a direct a trigger for memory. In some cases dislike of a scent is simply a reaction to the memory that it evokes. That doesn't mean the scent is bad - at least, not to anyone else.

Anything pine-smells like a public restroom! Rose-old lady smell...What is 30 feet long and smells like urine? A line dance at the assisted living home.
