This is your conductor speaking....
The purpose of this swapbox is to provide an opportunity for folks to try colognes and aftershaves that they might not normally get a chance to try, by relying on the largesse of the wetshaving community
Several of the mods will be adding samples to the box from their private stashes. I'll provide the empty vials and the box will make its initial rounds this way to get fully stocked. This is the priming phase.
Once the box is "primed", I will publish a list of what is in the box, and put out a call for who wants it next. I will conduct a lottery, and the winner will have the box shipped to them. They take samples out - three can be taken for "free", and any more have to be swapped for something from their stash. Of course, other additions out of kindness are appreciated as well. There will be empty vials in the box to facilitate this.
The person with the box then posts the new inventory and the process begins again. It runs until no one else wants it, and then it returns to me.
This way those who just want to try stuff but don't have samples to contrbute can grab some without obligation (except for the nominal fee), and since the inventory is published beforehand, there is no question about getting the box and beng disappointed in the contents.
We will also keep part of the inventory a "surprise" so there is some fun involved besides knowing all the contents beforehand.
Since I put up the funds to buy the materials, if you get the box I will ask for a donation of $1-$2 to help defray the costs. I think this is a very nominal fee to try out some cool fragrances.
I would also like to hear from anyone who has a lot of colognes/aftershaves who would like to participate in the "priming" phase. The more samples we can start out with, the more fun it is.
I will try and start filling samples this week, and get the box moving along. I will post progress on this thread as it progresses. Feel free to add commentary or suggestions to make this a valuable exercise.

Hey Fellas-
Well, this evening I got the opportunity to cash in my winning lottery ticket and hop on board the B&B Fragrance Train.
Woo-Hoo!
First things first, Scotto, please take a bow. This was a brilliant idea and you did an outstanding job putting the box together.
When I opened the package I couldn't believe what I saw inside... Forty-two individually bagged vials of odoriferous splendor. Yes, I said forty-two different samples of some of the most intoxicating fragrances in the world! In addition, Scotto included everything needed to create additional samples: Empty vials, empty Ziploc bags, a marker for labeling the bags, an eyedropper and even latex gloves.
As I started pouring through the mountain of Ziplocs and reading the names of the fragrances contained within, I began to get more and more excited the deeper I went. I can't think of too many places (New York City or elsewhere) where someone could have the opportunity to audition so many different high quality fragrances from so many different houses all at once. It is truly an amazing collection!
Okay, I'm not going to review all forty-two scents (Sorry!), but I will comment on the five I selected.
- Taylor's St. James: A really nice blend of citrus, herbs and woods. I believe this is what is known as a "fougere". Overall, a very clean scent. A little different, but very easy for anyone to wear.
- Taylor's Mr. Taylor: Another splendid blend of citrus, herbs and wood, however much warmer and spicier than St. James. My girlfriend really liked this one. I think it's a classic scent.
- D.R. Harris' Arlington: A subtle blend of citrus and fern. Very light, but delicious! I immediately placed Arlington on my fragrance wish list. Being citrus-based, I think it might be a bit short-lived.
- L'Occitane's Vetyver: I happen to like the scent of Vetiver, while I know some others do not. This a stong mix of woods and herbs. Very masculine and sophisticated. Not for everyone.
- Art of Shaving's Sandalwood: Another powerful fragrance. This is what I think pure Sandalwood smells like. (But, I could be wrong!) Again, this is unmistakably masculine, although a bit warmer than the Vetyver.
Truth be told, I would have liked to have taken another ten samples, but I don't have that many fragrances in my collection to substitute! For my part, I will include: Floris' No. 89, Penhaligon's English Fern, Trumper's West Indian Extract of Limes and Acqua di Parma's Blu Mediterraneo Mandorlo di Sicilia. (The last an absolute MUST for all you almond lovers!)
This is by far my longest post ever, so I will end it now, but not before advising that anyone who doesn't sign up for a seat on the B&B Fragrance Train is making a mistake. It is an experience! Get on board!

You're both close, it's actually called 'Gurning'.
GURNING is the art of pulling of grotesque faces. The word gurn means to snarl like a dog, look savage, distort the countenance.
The word gurning seems to have been originally Scottish, in the form girn, which, appears to have been a contorted form of grin. It has had several meanings, of which the oldest - from medieval times - is still current in Scots and Irish dialect.
The origin of gurning is obscure but it is thought to have come from one of two things.
One was making a mockery of the village idiot. Townsfolk would throw a horse collar over the fool and make him pull funny faces in exchange for a few pints.
The other involves a drunken farmer who arrived home to find a discontented wife. He shouted: "Stop gurning woman!" and thrust a collar over her head!
Gurning has been 'named and shamed' as one of the 10 worst tourist trap events in Britain.
Oh, what a veritable fountain of knowledge I am!!
(oh and Google is my friend.............................)
I thought I used the accepted spelling.

I believe "Girning" was the original Scottish spelling and it has been changed by the Brits to "Gurning". Probably either one is acceptable.

Alright gentlemen, the Fragrance Train has arrived at my household!
I spent an extremely enjoyable 45 minutes with the wife last night opening zip lock baggies and sniffing the contents, it kind of reminded me of skanky young teens sniffing glue!!!
Anyhoooooooo, wifey never ceases to amaze me and put forth what I thought was actually a pretty bloody good idea.
We're all aware of how different the scents can be from 'in bottle' to 'on skin' due to dry-down right? She suggested putting those tester strips you get in the department store into the pack so you could actually put a tiny drop on the strip and then smell it a little while later to see if you still like it as the scent changes.
Now I know that effectively means you are removing a tiny drop of the sample but given the number of samples and the fact that people are pretty unlikely to test all of them, I don't think it would cause samples to disappear due to people using a small drop of the ones they were most intersted in smelling. Plus, we all have different tastes and so would be unlikely to hit the same samples over and over.
What do you guys think, I thought it sounded like a fairly good concept??
Scotto
05-05-2006, 08:16 AM
Good idea. Go for it. :wink1:

The train rolled into my station today!
I'll send it back on its way on Monday, since I won't be home for the next two days, and our local post office is closed on Saturday.
Scotto, please PM me the next address.
Thanks all!
ps. I'll also be adding 5-10 vials of my own!

I have a question.
Can whoever included the sample of 4711 (which I removed....thanks) tell me which one it is as I am seriously giving consideration to buying some of this. There do, however, seem to be a few varieties:

Andy,
I can't help you with which is which, but I do know that some guys have found 4711 at Big Lots!. I have the gold and green bottle, which I received in trade, and it came from Big Lots. Have you tried Google?

Thanks Randy, I have googled it and found it at numerous places. It's always the blue label version and isn't horribly expensive either. I have a Big Lots near me, I'll have to check it out.
Cheers Randy.

I'm on the road this weekend, and the missus just told me that I received, and I quote, "another box".
I'm assuming it's the fragrance train, but I guess it could be the Milord I'm expecting, or the new Aristocrat, or the strop I'm donating to a worthy cause, and I do have another str8 on the way, or I suppose it could be that order from CS. Oh, for God's sake, at this point it could be anything.:blushing:
Let you know on Monday.

Got the magic box back today. Wow - I forgot how much stuff is in there! Looks like you guys put some goodies in there as well; I'll re-stock it over the next few days and then get it out to soulshine. After that, I think we need to get it to some of our Canadian friends.
This thing has been on the road since March - let's keep it going!! If people have interest in entering scent-addled mayhem, drop me a PM.

It's a really great project, and a wonderful oppurtunity to sniff so many fragrances at once. Just keep in mind that although all the colors of the spectrum combine to make white, all of these wonderful scents combine to smell like a rest room on the IRT subway. Keep 'em seperate, boys.
Seriously, it was refreshing to discover how I enjoyed scents I never thought I would, and very helpfull fo realize that some very well known products (which I might have otherwise purchased on a whim) really weren't for me. A fantastic resource.

The train appears to have been derailed in the handoff from rusirius to jbasl.
Last sighting was on 4/26/07:

Looking at rusirius' profile, 4/26/07 was also the last date that he visited the B&B forum. rusirius hasn't responded to PM and has email contact disabled.
jbasl hasn't responded to my PM yet and also has email contact disabled. However... he has been on forum as recently as 4 days ago. Hopefully he will check in again in a few days. After all, this is vacation season, etc.
I did get a confirmation that the train did not get passed on from jbasl to the next gentleman.
If a moderator is able to contact these two folks by email, it could be helpful in the recovery effort.

Hi Guys,
First let me appologize for holding the train up. I had contacted jbasl about getting it sent off, but he told me he was no longer interested, so I moved on to the next, Creskin. He got back to me and told me to send it on, but didn't include an address. I asked for the address and never got a response back. Then in waiting for a response I had two fairly overwhelming family emergencies / life issues that I had to deal with in succession. In the mean time the fragrance train got shoved to the side and completely forgotten about. Since then things are doing a bit better, and I checked my email this morning and saw the queries about the train.
Again I appoligize deeply for holding it up as long as I have. If Creskin can get back to me with an address I'll get it sent out ASAP.
Thanks for understanding.

So it looks like there's about 4 or so that might no longer be active. The mods/admins will have to make the final call as to how best to handle this train moving forward (pun intended) to help minimize the chances of it getting sidetracked again.

Perhaps to give this frag train a little more organization, I think we should take the current people on the list and just alphabetize the remaining members by their screen names. Now jbasl is no longer interested so who would be next alphabetically?

I would think that with shipping costs involved, geographical would make more sense.

Agreed, but we'd need to get whomever has the package currently a list of all addresses and then basically start over from there.

I don't like that idea too much, as it pushes me futher down the list  and there is 3 of us in my area on the list.

Just checked in since my last post... To update your current list, jbsl was no longer interested (as already posted) and Creslin was and got back to me with his address, the box is currently with UPS Ground on it's way towards Texas.
FWIW I removed the Kenneth Cole Black and one other (can't remember off the top of my head), and added a little to the repair fund.

Shoot, if this thing ever comes around again I'd be interested in it. Maybe a Train redux or something.

So. is the train still going? Scotto, are you still the conductor?
Who takes tickets? I'd like to hop a ride.

Im not sure whats going on with the train but I feel I aught to ask. I know some of you have been waiting for over a year for it and still holding out hope that it may at some point arrive. I believe it would be a good idea to make sure its ok with the majority on the list to begin suddenly alphabetizing or sending to people by area. I know it makes sense and saves money but as I said some people have been waiting for almost 2 years! I dont speak for those I know here or Tinzien but if it were me and I was on the list ( which im not :) ) Id be quite put out to find myself reordered and be waiting even longer. Just trying to avoid a trainwreck.

Creslin was the last known recipient. Can anyone try to contact him and verify he at least received the package?

Highly interested, on a ticket for this train. Let me know if it is possible.
Is there plan for another train?

I'm next on the list and have PM'ed him and emailed him directly. I will post an update when I received the FT.
I am not in favor of reordering the list. It might move around a little faster if the list were ordered by region, but trying to fairly order the train would be a big headache.
Folks... the very existence of the train is due to generosity of Scotto and the care taken by subsequent B&B members. Having the train stop by your place is a privilege and not an entitlement. The idea is so wonderful that people haved signed up much a lot faster than the train can possibly travel.
I've been on the list since last October and still eagerly anticipate the arrival.

I, too, am interested in hopping aboard. I don't have much to add, 'cept some Tommy cologne, but would be willing to part with a few ducats to be added to the list.

Perhaps it would be better to have a few smaller trains going in parallell? That way if one gets stuck somewhere it's not as big a deal. And more people could get reached in shorter time as well...
And I'd love to be on the train, if it re-appears and takes euro-people on board.

Great Idea! why not start one yourself?
Because I'm horribly low on anything to start it with. But in a week or two, once I have my vacation over with and all I might give it a try. What kind of containers were used for the original train?

:cursing:
Well, much as is the story of my life, nothing ever seems to go as planned... As stated, back on July 1st, I mailed this box off to Creslin using the name and address he provided.
Somewhere around the 16th of July, I got a note from UPS saying they had billed me an additional $5 or something like that, for "adjusting" my address.
Apparently somehow their system stripped off the Apartment number and they charged me to "add" it back on. :cursing:
In the mean time, on July 25th my wife went in to the hospital to give birth to our first child who was born on the 26th at 9:41pm.
On the 29th I returned home to find the fragrance train box sitting on my door step.
Unfortunately with everything going on with becoming a new father, I couldn't even think about dealing with it then, and set it off to the side to be taken care of later...
Last week, I received yet another note from UPS, again charging me another $8 for the curtesy of returning my package to me.
After investigating the tracking information,
(tracking number: 1ZE6T8150399489244)
it looks like on the 9th they "fixed" the address (the original apartment number was supplied, but doesn't show up in their system apparently.)
Apparently on the Monday the 9th, the business was "closed". The 10th and 11th, I have no idea what that crap is all about... It says a correct "company or receiver name" is required, again, I know for a fact the correct name was supplied, or at least the name given to me, and that does show up in the online system.
The 12th and the 13th attempts were made again, and apparently the receiver was unable to sign.
For some reason, then on the 13th again, it says the business was closed... Maybe they tried again later in the evening?
On the 16th, another attempt was made, and apparently receiver was unable to sign again...
At this point, it looks like Creslin must have notified them that they would pick the package up at the UPS facility within 5 days...
By the 23rd, apparently the package had still not be picked up.
At this point, UPS sent the package back to me, and I'm once again back where I started. Just around $30 lighter... :cursing:
Whoever is next on the list, please PM me with your name and address so I can be rid of this cursed thing once and for all!
I'm next.
I've tried to get in touch with Creslin via PM and email. I've been unsuccesful. He hasn't been on B&B since 6-27-07.

LOL, yup, your drawing(s) is still there.. same box, just peeled the label and taped on a new... However it WAS starting to show some wear... I think it actually consists more of tape right now than cardboard... LOL... Might need to be replaced before too long...
That box has logged a lot of miles!
The train is at least 14-16 months old now.. amazing.

Confirmed. I have it.
Sadly, the train has arrived at the peak of my annual allergy season. I will get it moving again as quickly as I can.
(BTW-- nice artwork.)
Recovered from the edge of the abyss...
I'm happy to report that the Fragrance Train is back on track.
Today it is pulling out of the Tennessee station and is once again chugging toward the Left Coast.
The old train is looking a bit worse for wear, but there are still a lot of nice things in there.
I found a few nice ones -- Pecksniff's Aromatic Chype, Harris Arlington, and Truefitt & Hill Clubman.
I also contributed 8 or 9 new samples. Some Penhaligons & Creed, plus a few others.
Here is the list of upcoming stops as I know it:

Woohoo, I'm within 10 people.
This is a really great idea. I am rather new to the whole wet shaving, another one of those "shaving is getting expensive, what other options do I have" people. I have been reading around this forum for a couple weeks, but just recently joined in on the fun. I can not get over how friendly and helpful people seem to be around here. I appreciate it! One thing I am finding though is that in my quest to find a cheaper way to shave, I found a better way to shave, but now I am spending even more money on my gear! :) Thanks B&B!
