PM'd Jim my address. Not sure what all is in it, but I'm sure there's some stuff I haven't tried yet, and some stuff I can add to it.

I'd love to be added to the train after Jason, if that's cool. I have no idea what's in the box, but also have too many several additions that I can make.

Got the package -- there are even some coffee beans in there! I'll pass those on.

There was a Tide laundry detergent stick in there too -- anyone know what that's for?

I'll get the contents transferred to another box (the one that arrived is pretty beat up) and back into the mail tomorrow or Monday. Whomever is next on the list PM me your address!

Here's the list as of the last time it was mentioned in this thread:

I think I have everyone who has asked on the list. Here is the next list as it stands:

ace(NE)
msandoval858
etagloh
tjkirch
BGog
Rsirus
jbasl
Creslin
Buzz
vcowman
josh434
Daveshaves
Padron
Ken from Denver
italianogre
mtwo
Baloosh
Chef8489
Tinzien
aspherical
johnniegold
Ltltony
Crag
mraquarium

The bolded name is where the package currently resides. And we know that the next person on the list (jbasl) is no longer interested. Creslin is still interested, but no shipping address yet to the current owner.

Moving down the list:

Buzz is current, in fact he's online right now (as of this posting)
vcowman is current (last activity yesterday)
josh434 is current (last activity 6-19-07)
Daveshaves is current (last activity 6-22-07)
Padron is current (last activity today)
Ken from Denver is current (last activity 6-7-07)
italianotigre doesn't look to be current (last activity 2-3-07)
mtwo might be current (last activity 5-7-07)
me (of course!)
Chef8489 doesn't look to be current (last activity 3-13-07)
Tinzien has already responded in here
aspherical is current (last activity 6-24-07)
johnniegold is current (last activity today)
ltltony doesn't look to be current (last activity 2-20-07)
Crag is current (last activity 6-2-07)
mraquarium doesnt' look to be current (last activity 2-24-07)

So it looks like there's about 4 or so that might no longer be active. The mods/admins will have to make the final call as to how best to handle this train moving forward (pun intended) to help minimize the chances of it getting sidetracked again.

here is one

That list is somewhat old, I'll reference that one and bring it up to date:

Chef8489 doesn't look to be current (last activity 3-13-07)
Tinzien has already responded in here
aspherical is current (last activity 6-1-08)
johnniegold is current, but punked out
ltltony is current (last activity 6-10-08)
Crag is current (last activity 6-12-08)
mraquarium doesn't look to be current (last activity 2-24-07)

So it looks like aspherical would be next on the list, after me. PM'ing now!

Good news Gents, Jason (Baloosh) has graciously accepted an offer to be the head conductor, engineer and brakeman on the B&B fragrance train. Jason is going to do a quick review of all the names on the list and make a few changes on how the Train gets to and fro.... Thanks Jason!:thumbup1:

My pleasure Jim.

Guys, I think we've all seen how this Train has gotten, shall we say, off track a few times. Somehow, through his magical, mystical powers, Jim managed to locate it again. I'm going to institute a couple of minor changes to the way we handle the Train starting now and moving forward -- simply in an effort to maximize our chances of the Train staying alive and making it to its various destinations.

Effective today, all recipients, both those on the current list posted above, as well as anyone else who wants to jump on the list after it was posted, must PM me with their email address and a contact phone number. I promise not to sign you up for any spam lists, or make cranks calls to your phone at 4:00am (well, except for maybe Lynchmeister ). Also, for anyone not on the list who wants to be added, there will be a minimum of 6 months of membership (meaning you must have registered on or before December 2007) and a minimum of 200 posts.

All of this is done not to be difficult... merely to help us stand as best a chance as possible of ensuring the Train keeps chugging along! One quick note on the post count -- 200 ain't a lot, and this Train has been moving since early 2006... so if you want to participate, but don't quite meet the minimum post count yet... start posting! By the time it's gone through a few names, you could be well on your way to sampling a bunch (and I mean a BUNCH) of colognes!

So if you want on the list, and those already on it who are still interested, PM me your email address and a phone number. Nobody will use the contact information unless the Train derails again once it reaches you. That's it.

Great job to everyone keeping the Train moving along! Here's the latest updated list, including those who PM'd me their contact info (Name, Shipping address, Email address and Phone #) and who meet the minimum criteria (at least 6 months membership and at least 200 posts). New additions below:

aspherical
ltltony
Crag (has the Train now)
Zeni
Lynchmeister
Doleeo
Atlguitfiddle
Jet

A couple of gents have PM'd interest, but I either need their shipping address or they don't quite meet the minimum criteria yet -- so get posting everyone, and by the time the train gets to the last person, it will probably be well your 6 month anniversary!

It is taking 3 months for two stations. Why can't we change the format of this train? make a spray it forward. We already do pay it forwards for newbies, but we can also do it with some more experienced members. Every one of us posts the samples we are willing to let go. Someone asks for the specific sample and offers to the board something from his own collection. It does not have to be restricted to fragrances. The only thing that would affect this format is the ability of editing posts to make the SIF current, so you do not get PMs everyday about something you already gave away.

You PM Baloosh, then wait a couple of years and may be you'll get it to stop by you.

It seems tome that some time limits may not be a bad idea. Looks like the last few people have had it for over a month, which seems rather unreasonable to me. I'd say 10 days at most at any stop and it should move forward. If it ever gets going again, that is.

That's it.

Here you go-

Great job to everyone keeping the Train moving along! Here's the latest updated list, including those who PM'd me their contact info (Name, Shipping address, Email address and Phone #) and who meet the minimum criteria (at least 6 months membership and at least 200 posts). New additions below:

A couple of gents have PM'd interest, but I either need their shipping address or they don't quite meet the minimum criteria yet -- so get posting everyone, and by the time the train gets to the last person, it will probably be well your 6 month anniversary!

Hey Jim, the train's doing well. I apologize again for what seems to be a now obligatory hold-up...huh...I think there might be a joke in the somewhere...

At any rate, I received the box at the tail end of my move into the new house, was able to ruffle through the contents briefly, and stuff it into the mover's caravan before it officially got lost in the post-move shuffle.

I have since reclaimed the train from the wreckage in my basement and had a chance to go through and separate out what I have already tried and/or didn't care for upon the initial sniff test. I'm cruising through the rest and am confident I can have this baby off to its next recipient by Monday. :thumbup1:

Gentlemen,

I must say, I was starting to get nervous until I finally saw Woods of Windsor on your fragrance list. Now, for some of us old geezers — old in body perhaps, but not in mind — and especially me, no such list can be complete without Trumper's Spanish Leather and Truefitt & Hill's Spanish Leather. While we're at it, I cannot also neglect Caswell-Massey's No. 6.

I know these treasured fragrances do not fan every gentleman shaver, but they do enough of us. So, please, I recommend that extra touch of elegance and class to this lovely fragrance train.

Regards,

Obelit

Guys, I think we've all seen how this Train has gotten, shall we say, off track a few times. Somehow, through his magical, mystical powers, Jim managed to get it moving (again).

Also, this looks like a good time to go over the rules for eligibility, as well as add another one:simply in an effort to maximize our chances of the Train staying alive and making it to its various destinations.

See below:

All recipients, both those on the current list, as well as anyone else who wants to jump on the list after it was posted, must PM me with their email address and a contact phone number. I promise not to sign you up for any spam lists, or make cranks calls to your phone at 4:00am. Also, for anyone not on the list who wants to be added, there will be a minimum of 6 months of membership (meaning you must have registered on or before February 2009) and have a minimum of 200 posts.

ALSO NOTE THE NEW RULE: I think we all can agree that an expectation of 2 weeks is plenty of time to check out the contents and get it moving on to the next recipient. That means that you should only keep the box for 2 weeks max, then send it on its way to the next gent on the list.

Don't be so sure. I think that the Fragrance Train is one of the ghost trains that you hear about in folktales and old cowboy songs. When it pulls into your station, you have all kids of wonderful fragrances to try. But it comes with a curse--you can never speak of what you learn to anyone.

The Buried Train by Robert Bly

Tell me about the train that people say got buried
By the avalanche--was it snow?--It was
In Colorado, and no one saw it happen.
There was smoke from the engine curling up

Lightly through fir tops, and the engine sounds.
There were all those people reading--some
From Thoreau, some from Henry Ward Beecher.
And the engineer smoking and putting his head out.

I wonder when that happened. Was it after
High School, or was it the year we were two?
We entered this narrow place, and we heard the sound
Above us--the train couldn't move fast enough.

It isn't clear what happened next. Are you and I
Still sitting there in the train, waiting for the lights
To go on? Or did the real train get really buried;
So at night a ghost train comes out and keeps going...

doleeo
11-17-2009, 09:15 PM

As far as I know, these are the current requirements for participation.

I just spent that last half hour or so reading through the postings in this thread. It's pretty amazing that the train has been running along the tracks for several years now. It's also amazing to see how hard the members a couple of years ago worked to keep the train moving from station to station. In the first months of operation, people would get it and turn it around in a remarkable amount of time. The guys who participated back then could probably add a lot more to this, but it's impressive to see the way people worked together to keep it going--and growing.

The down side seems to be that when it sits at one station for too long, the enthusiasm of other people down the track cools. Some of them drop off and the route becomes unclear. The fragrance train becomes fragrance Amtrak.

I'd like to make a modest proposal to everybody living along the tracks. Let's try to treat the train like a trade on the B/S/T. I'm looking forward to getting it myself, but I bet the guys who are after me on the list are looking forward to getting it too. When it pulls into the station for me, I'm going to enjoy the heck out of it, add some goodies to it, and get it back on its way in good order.

Gents,

I'm happy to announce that the train pulled into my house today. I didn't have time to give it a really close look, but I have browsed the contents and all I can say is WOW!

With regard to my earlier promises of posting pictures, I am sorry to say that I will have to renege on them; I was contacted (in a dream) by one of the keepers of the train, and he informed me that it is in keeping with custom to keep said train's contents a secret, as to not spoil the surprise. Let it suffice for me to say that you will all be very pleased.

Anyway, I'm hoping to give the train a closer look this week, and I plan to stock it with a few goodies of my own. I will have it off to the next recipient a week from today.

Looks like it's about time for an updated passenger list. Who is on after auee1977? I'm wondering if I should be anxious for my turn in 2010 or do I need to be patient until sometime in 2011 (if I'm lucky).

Darn, I got excited seeing I was next only to see that another member is in front of me. At least it will not have to travel far as Rich is in east Texas and I am near Dallas. Nevertheless the train is coming and I am ready for it and have samples to add when it gets here.

Effective today, all recipients, both those on the current list posted above, as well as anyone else who wants to jump on the list after it was posted, must PM me with their full name, shipping address, email address and a contact phone number. I promise not to sign you up for any spam lists, or make cranks calls to your phone at 4:00am (well, except for maybe Lynchmeister). Also, for anyone not on the list who wants to be added, there will be a minimum of 6 months of membership (meaning you must have registered on or before July 2009) and a minimum of 200 posts.

So if you want on the list, and those already on it who are still interested, PM me your full name, shipping address, email address and a phone number. Nobody will use the contact information unless the Train derails again once it reaches you. That's it.

Chris did you find anything to get?

There were a couple of things that I have been thinking about getting and this gave me a chance to try them out. Although people speak so highly of Harris' aftershaves, they never really captured my imagination. There was a nice bit of Marlborough included and I was surprised at how well it worked. Gotta get me something by Harris now!

There was also a sample that saved me from what might have been a bad investment. In my quest to collect Asian fragrances, I've been thinking about buying a bottle of Shiseido's Basala sight unseen. There was a tiny sample of Basala hiding in the back of the train--and I thought that it was terrible. I posted somewhere else that my kids said that it smelled like burned celery and dog butt (my dog was a dissenter on this). I might not go that far, but it wasn't what I thought it would be.

All in all, it was a lot of fun to have the train!

This is your conductor speaking....

The purpose of this swapbox is to provide an opportunity for folks to try colognes and aftershaves that they might not normally get a chance to try, by relying on the largesse of the wetshaving community

Several of the mods will be adding samples to the box from their private stashes. I'll provide the empty vials and the box will make its initial rounds this way to get fully stocked. This is the priming phase.

Once the box is "primed", I will publish a list of what is in the box, and put out a call for who wants it next. I will conduct a lottery, and the winner will have the box shipped to them. They take samples out - three can be taken for "free", and any more have to be swapped for something from their stash. Of course, other additions out of kindness are appreciated as well. There will be empty vials in the box to facilitate this.

The person with the box then posts the new inventory and the process begins again. It runs until no one else wants it, and then it returns to me.

This way those who just want to try stuff but don't have samples to contrbute can grab some without obligation (except for the nominal fee), and since the inventory is published beforehand, there is no question about getting the box and beng disappointed in the contents.

We will also keep part of the inventory a "surprise" so there is some fun involved besides knowing all the contents beforehand.

Since I put up the funds to buy the materials, if you get the box I will ask for a donation of $1-$2 to help defray the costs. I think this is a very nominal fee to try out some cool fragrances.

I would also like to hear from anyone who has a lot of colognes/aftershaves who would like to participate in the "priming" phase. The more samples we can start out with, the more fun it is.

I will try and start filling samples this week, and get the box moving along. I will post progress on this thread as it progresses. Feel free to add commentary or suggestions to make this a valuable exercise.

Absolutely. Much as I like Aerosmith and think that Joe Perry is one of the most underrated guitar players, the history of this song is the history of rock and roll:

I think Johnny Burnette's 1956 version may be the best one. Full-on rockabilly.

The risk of this happening will always be the nature of the beast in this type of scenario... unless someone volunteers to personally deliver the train to each recipient and then wait the 2 weeks in their hometown, and then personally deliver it to the next recipient, etc. etc.

Otherwise, the only other recourse is to bug the crap out of the person holding on to it for too long.
