I'm on a quest to find the Ultimate Whisky Nosing and Tasting glass.
So far, I've got the Glencairn Glass, Riedel SMS glass, and Riedel Cognac Hennessy glass.
Right now, I'm trying to find the Michael Jackson Whisky Glass, it used to be sold at Malt Advocates website but I can no longer find it.
I'm also tempted by the Maison du Whisky Pure Glass and the Glenmorangie Nosing glass. www.celticmalts.com also has a glass that looks promising as does the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. The Johnson's Whisky Tot sold at MaltAdvocate.com might be good as well. Any thoughts on any of these, I have no experience with any of them.
I'd appreciate any recommendations and where to find the glasses or comments on any of the glasses listed above.
Thanks so much all!

Hi Tim. I went to this site http://www.whiskymag.com/store/
and if you scroll to the bottom of this page, you'll see the whisky tasting glass. I think this is what you are referring to. It is listed for 6 pounds Sterling which is about $12 U.S. I don't know how crazy shipping charges would be. How about the Reidel products? I know they make(made) a spirits glass. I to would be interested in getting one or two of these glasses.

I've got many of those, and honestly prefer the Reidel Port glass.

That's the Glencairn glass, it's a good nosing glass. I already have one, but it's not the Michael Jackson glass, I'm searching for, but thanks anyway Todd, it's appreciated.

Hey Tim...have you tried the Bourbon specific glass that Riedel makes? I have also been considering picking a couple of their Port glasses. They might do a good job with Bourbons as well.

Tim, Look here (http://whiskywarehouse.be/list6.htm), down towards the bottom. They have the glass, or the glass signed by MJ with a lid and gift box.

I've used the Celtic Malts glass. It does the job just dandy, but I'm not sure it's any better than the Riedel you currently have. Granted, I didn't have a Riedel Single Malt Scotch glass for comparison at the time.

I've got that one and don't really like it much, IMO Riedel laid a bit of an egg with it. Both bourbon and scotch need a small, nose-friendly glass.

I like La Maison du Whisky Pure Glasses. The small size is perfect for drinking whisk(e)y neat. It's what I use every day.

Ah, sorry Tim. I was hoping to actually be of help. I am very glad to see a couple of straight up honest opinions about the Reidel bourbon glass. Just honest opinions without any undue negativity. A good one to pass on it seems. I am intrigued by the port glass option. I love tawny ports(please don't ask for help, I'm pretty ignorant there as well) and that may be a likely option. Even though port is a dessert drink, do we not enjoy our bourbons after the repast as well? It would seem some of the same characteristics come into play. Smallish amounts, lots of nosing, etc. Hell, I may be all wet there too.

I've been doing some taste comparisons. When I drink from the Riedel Single Malt Glass every whisky tastes better. I mean this very seriously, everything tastes better. The effect is even more dramatic on Scotch.
Now the Glencairn and the Cognac/Hennessy glass are better for nosing, but I find don't produce the improved flavor when tasting.
So if you are looking for a glass to make you whisky taste better and that's your primary objective, I cannot recommend Riedel's Single Malt Whisky glass enough, it's fantastic.

I was thinking about this last night Tim when I sat down with the Laphroaig 10. I couldn'e be happier with these glasses. I definitely recommend them as well.

Tim,
I finally got back to you under the Bourbon post...soory so late. But I see here that you've advanced past at least some of what I said there.
The ISO glass I mentioned is fairly similar to the Riedel Bourbon glass (which I've never seen in person and never used). It's actually what I like for Bourbon, but you may not.
The thing with glasses is that the geometry of the glass makes such a difference that when you are talking about particularly intense flavors like whiskey can be, a glass that accentuates this or that can make all the difference and really just comes down to preferences.
I would simply try a variety of small glasses with your different whiskeys and see what you like best in what.
Then while you are comtemplating how a Van Winkle Rye tastes in various glasses and how subtle flavors are enhanced or diminished in different glasses, you can contemplate the fate of the poor vodka drinkers who don't get any of this! :001_tt2:

Is your Riedel the Vinum? Also, have you tried the Spieglau?

I have not tried the Spieglau.

I have not tried the Spieglau.
I finally picked up a couple of the Vinums on the weekend for $18 each ... not bad considering I've seen them going for $25-30 or more. We're talking Canadina money, BTW. (And I got them as souvenirs on a trip, so even if they were expensive, it's a better souvenir than a fridge magnet!) I can't wait to try them out.
Spieglau is now owned by Riedel, BTW.

I did find one of those Michael Jackson glasses that can be shipped to me here in the states, but they want over $33 just to ship the glass, the total price would be around $50 for a single glass of mediocre quality crystal. As much as I want one of these, I don't think I can justify that much for a single glass.
Which Riedel did you pick up?
The scotch one. I remember the first time I saw that glass, thinking "but how does it concentrate the aroma??", but so many people rave about it that I figure it's worth a shot (so to speak).

In my experience it does very little for the nose but can greatly increase the flavor. If I had to do it again, I'd purchase my glasses again. They aren't the best, but they're good, I like them.

I have an idea what that glass will be, now I just have to find it.
Thin, leaded crystal, stem to make glass easier to hold, shape that curves in towards the top to concertrate aroma then curves back out at the lip, to direct bouquet to the nose.
Something that's somewhat the MJ glass but thinner glass and leaded crystal with a steeper curve at the lip, or like the Riedel VS Sommelier glass with bigger inward curve to further concentrate aroma.
Though unfortunately what I described, I can't find it. :a52:

Timmy,
I'll think that you'll find that the "snifter" here is the same as the malt advocate glass but a lot cheaper
http://www.royalmilewhiskies.com/category.asp?cat_id=S_GLAS
The Wilson & Morgan glass also looks interesting
I could send you a port glass that I use for the cost of shipping only

Yeah, the snifter Royal Mile is a Glencairn, I've got one of those, but what I really want is Wilson and Morgan Glass you mention from their site, it's the exact glass I've been looking for for a month, but it's 17 pounds just for shipping to the US. :frown:
Thanks so much for the info though, it's really appreciated.
Can you tell me a little bit about that port glass? Thanks

Much like the Moss Scuttle, would it be possible for you guys to employ a glass blower/artisan to custom make some glasses to your specifications? Just something that crossed my mind as I was reading this thread.

I would love to do that, because I have a specific glass design in mind. First problem, I have no abiltiy to draw whatsoever, so I have no clue how I would convey my idea to an artisan and second I can't imagine how much that would cost. But it's a good idea, something I hadn't thought of, thanks Cory.

Tim,
The port glass (in the ISO style)was one of a pair that was bought for me by my sons for Christmas
They're part of the "Wine Gourmet" range at Debenhams (The UK's largest department store chain) and are on offer at £6.40 a pair

I had to order another Glencairn glass a little while ago as I broke my old one a while back. I used tonight when tasting Highland Park 12 for my review. I was pleasantly surprised the glass was even better than I remember. In terms of palate it's not as good as the Riedel, but is a wonderful noser. All and all, I'm very glad I replaced the glass, when it initally broke I wasn't too stressed, but I'm quite glad to have one again now.

Does anyone know anything about this glass (http://www.wineenthusiast.com//E/details.asp?Ep=An/0//A/19771&uid=92918037-FCBE-426D-BEE5-2FFA3E32CF1D&AfID=ZNXT)?
My set of 6 Riedel Vinum Single Malt glasses arrived today. I'm sipping a dram of Laphroaig Quarter Cask and am amazed at how it enhances the flavor compared to my regular scotch glass. My wife took a sip and said, "It really opens up the taste!"
Two will be gifts and I'll keep the rest.
Last night had a dram of my old standby, Macallan 12 and the Riedel brought out nuances I never knew were there.
At this moment I'm sipping the gentle giant, Lagavulin 16.
All I can say is, life is good in America...
Very good!

I know nothing, as Sgt Schultz was wont to say ...
But it seems to have a different angle to the lip than the Riedel, so probably different performance on the palate. But it's a bit tulip'd, so probably better on the aroma. Just a guess ...

Have you guys noticed that Riedel makes two different single malt whisky glasses? One of them is part of the Vinum collection (commonly found at 15 or 16 bucks), the other is part of Sommeliers. The Sommeliers whisky glasses are almost $50 each! Those of you who have the Riedel glasses, which do you own?
By the way, I received the Johnson's Whisky Tots today. I'll enjoy some of the Glenmorangie 15 with it this evening and let you know what I think. For those who are interested, on Friday I'll open the Laphroaig 30.

I'm sure you're aware of this, but using whisky glasses kind of changes how you drink scotch. I noticed things going on in the Glenmorangie 15 that I never picked up with a tumbler. First, there was a pretty strong vanilla and fruity presence when nosing(The narrow mouth of the glass really concentrates the notes of the scotch. I couldn't believe how strong the scent was.). Upon initial tasting, the vanilla/fruity taste were still there, but were followed by a semi powerful peppery taste. I am sure these were there before, but the Johnson's tot definitely accentuated these properties. I'm going to sample again tomorrow (JWB, Glenmorangie 15 again), this time in both a tumbler and the tot. We'll see how this goes...

If you have a snifter, try drinking out of one of those to compare with the tot instead of the tumbler. Tumber's look great, but in terms of tasting, they are pretty much useless.
