Spring is in the air and summer is just around the corner and I know I could use some new shades... or maybe a new vacation home in Panama!
Ok, I guess I can be happy with a bottle of BOURBON!

All this whiskey talk got me in the mood for something different. On my brother's advice I picked up a bottle of Russell's Reserve today. My brother wanted my thoughts on this whiskey, since it is different than the Evan Williams single barrel. Will indulge tonite with a cigar, not sure which one yet. :)

Ordered some Mexican Chiapas and Ethiopia Sidamo from Ristrettos...our own Ben Vereen of Coffee Beans.

Anybody have any experience with the Ethiopia Sidamo? Looks pretty tasty.

My wife used to make fun of me for mail ordering coffee beans...new grinder...an Aeropress...but she isn't laughing now. She actually had some coffe black yesterday and enjoyed it...she commented on how it wasn't bitter or anything. The Chiapas makes one hell of a latte as well.

You are correct. It is pretty tasty. It's one of RR's bolder beans, with lots going on, but very smooth as usual.

No experience with this particular Ethiopian, but as for the Mexican Chiapas, I was very pleasantly surprised. It's just about the nicest breakfast drink I can think of.

In a related note, I had the honor and privilege of tasting a sample of Mexican beans hand roasted by our own Dr. Sample, whose expertise is apparently not limited to electronics. :thumbup1: It was delicious, and much better than what I'm used to getting from Trader Joe (the store, not the menthol addict) or Zabars.

Hey Tim, nice pull on the Compass Box. Went to a scotch tasting about 3 weeks ago and the guy who started Compass Box spoke. Forgot his name, but he is originally from Minnesota and started out in the wine business. Real interesting person. Really enjoyed some of the scotches they were putting out there.

Also, I purchased a bottle of Springbank 10 year old. Worthy of honorable mention, I received a bottle of Johnnie Blue and Gold (shocking) as gifts last week.

If I may offer an opinion

The Macallan Fine Oak 10 is the least favourite of my Macallans

Macallan 7
Macallan 10
Macallan Fine Oak 10
Macallan 12
Macallan CS

The unique Macallan expression of Oloroso casks is replaced by a pleasant whisky that could be anything

Hey Tim,

I posted some thoughts over in the IOTN thread. In short, I like it. It has a rustic feel to it and is really well behaved for being 114 pr. A great buy and a great bourbon. I'm curious as to the OGD BIB now.

Good, but IMO not in the same league as the 114. If memory serves it's in the 10-12 dollar range, it's pretty good for the money.

Trader Joe's Macallan 11 Year old Scotch
Its 80 proof and the label says distilled at Macallan and aged in oak casks
Think I paid around $20 for it. I'll post a picture of the bottle when I figure out how to operate my new camera.
I actually pick this up a few months ago, but only got around to openning it.
Its quite mild (frankly it tastes watered down) and a bit hot.
Would not recommend it.
Its better value to save your money and buy the real stuff....

One story, at my good friend's bachelor party the groom, myself and another hardcore scotch drinker finished a bottle of Macallan 12 year old over the course of the evening. We greedly kept this treasure for only the hard core by not allowing ice and only the odd splash of water. None of us had hangovers the next morning.

Shortly after we met, I caught SWMBO in the act of making a lassi, an Indian drink the comes in a myriad of flavors. She couldn't find any syrup in the fridge, so she decided to sweeten it with some desert wine I had open- a bottle of '81 Ch. d'Yquem. Thank god it was an '81.

Ice cubes in Macallan, huh.

I was fortunate enough to try the '67 at a friend's house, but the best desert wine that year was the (appropriately named for this forum) Gillette Creme de Tete.

I recently had a $15 bottle of Chambers Muscadelle from Australia that was almost as good. :w00t:

Was driving by Beltramos (http://www.beltramos.com/index.htm) yesterday and figured I would stop and take a look around. I haven't been in there in a while. I love this place, they have over 200 bottles of Scotch and a pretty good Bourbon selection. I picked up a bottle of Bulleit signed by Tom Bulleit and an Evan Williams Single Barrell "Beltramos Barrel 414" 1996. I had read Tom was in the area a couple of weeks ago and did a tasting locally...wish I knew about it. I think that would have been pretty cool.

I felt like a kid in a candy store...I will be going back, I have my eye on some bottles they have in stock.
