View Full Version : Klar Kabinett Soap -Looking for Five Volunteers
BullGoose
09-24-2010, 04:13 PM
I recently received a shipment of Klar Kabinett soap which I understand was/is popular with German Barbers. As a "Barber's Soap", I was under the mistaken impression that the Kabinett soap was a pliable shaving soap similar to Cella or P160. Instead, it is a semi-hard soap and comes packaged as two 250g sticks wrapped together in a brick.
I am looking for five volunteers to sample and review this soap as it is a relative unknown. Each volunteer will receive approximately 50g of the soap which should give you an ample chance to form an opinion.
This rose scented soap can be either milled into a mug or used as a shave stick. Volunteers should be experienced with hard soaps and/or shave sticks and should be willing to write a review.
One last note...this soap is distinctly different from the Klar Klassik soap in a tin.
Please send me a PM if you are interested.

Sweet! :thumbup1:
I'll give it a good two weeks of use then post a review in the review section. Any chance you can let us in on the ingredients.
On second thought, this may bias my opinion so maybe it is best to reveal that when I'm done reviewing.

You all are going to like this soap. It's pretty awesome.
How is it different than the Klarr in the tin?

I have ordered this shaving soap sometime last week ... I rather like the smell of it! I have not had the chance to try it yet. My guess this stuff will last a long time and get many fantastic shaves.

How is it different than the Klarr in the tin?
Klar Kabinett Soap Ingredients:
Sodium Cocoate, Potassium Cocoate, Sodium Stearate, Potassium Stearate, Aqua, Cocoamidoproprl Betaine,Soyamide DEA, Parfum,Sodium Chloride,Amino-Tris (methylene phosphomic acid) Tetrasodium EDTA, Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Hydroxyde, CI 77891, Geraniol, Benzyl Salicylate,Citronellol,Eugenol
Klar Rasierseife Klassik Ingredients:
Sodium Cocoate, Potassium Cocoate, Sodium Stearate, Potassium Stearate, Aqua, Cocoamidoproprl Betaine,Soyamide DEA, Parfum, Sodium Chloride, Beta Alamine, Diacetic Acid, Trisodium salt, Sodium Hydroxide, Linalool,Limonen, Benzylbenzoate, Coumarin
The Kabinett soap comes in a 500g block (actually two 250g blocks) and the Klar Klassik comes in a 110g tin. The scents of the two soaps are quite different as well...the Kabinett soap is Rose scented while the Klar Klassik has a spicey citrus scent with a leather note.

Hmmm....very interesting. I don't think I've used a predominant coconut oil based soap. Can't wait to get my sample and give it a thorough review.

I received my sample in the mail today and I'm looking forward to my morning shave. I really like the rose scent as does my wife...I may have to fight her to see who uses it first in the morning :w00t:
I will use it for the next week and than post a review. Thanks Phil for the opportunity to try this out!

Got mine in the mail today too. Milled it into my glass container and ready for my shave tomorrow.
Will post review after a few passes on the puck.
Thanks again for the opportunity to try to soap, Phil.

I've used mine the past three days and am highly impressed. This product loves water and I like that as I think it makes for a more slick lather, which to me is crucial when using a straight. Lather is nice and thick to. I will post a formal review when I've had a little more time with it, but initial impressions are that I like it more than GFT rose.

It's an outstanding product!
Great scent and lather that leaves the skin feeling phenomenal.
I received mine promptly as well. I've given it a couple days to fiddle with before posting anything, and here are my observations thus far:
1. This stuff is very potent where scent is concerned. It might just be my sniffer, but this is powerful stuff. It could double as an air scenter without any difficulty whatsoever. I ended up needing to keep the door closed when the bathroom isn't in use to avoid smelling it in adjacent rooms, but my nose is sensitive.
2. This stuff loves water and lathers easily. I found the bowl lathering of it to work as easily as Proraso/Omega. It charges a brush very quickly(moreso than any soap I have ever used), and lathers up in the bowl with casual effort. I found the lather needed at least as much water as the other soaps I use to get as slick as they do, but not all water is created equal.
3. Using it as a shave stick, it's out of this world. I don't normally use any soaps like this, but I gave it a try and it very quickly produced a very, very rich lather that when combined with a fresh blade gave me an extremely nice shave. I'll probably use it this way on a permanent basis, but I will try it in a bowl for superlathering experiments.

Good to hear it smells good and lathers nicely, but how's the shave? Skin care properties?

I was lucky enough to be given a 50g sample of this soap by Phil at Bullgoose shaving.
After using it for the whole week, I can easily say this is a top-notch soap. It was effortless in lather creation. The lather is generates is a soft and dense meringue-like lather.
The rose scent was incredibly strong right out of the package. However, once you start lathering with it, the scent gets more muted. I would rate this Rose scent on par with a Trumper's in terms of "style" (somewhat generic and commerical) versus the rose of C&S #88 soap.
In terms of overall performance, this probably ranks right up there.
As for value, you're getting 500g for $20. This easily is the best value soap out there for a rose scent.
I can easily see this soap as being a very strong contender for knocking Trumpers off as the go-to Rose scented shave soap for B&Bers, I think it'll just take time before people start spreading word-of-mouth on how well this soap performs.

Also, as an additional note:
The ultimate question and test of a product sample is this: "Would I add it to my shopping cart for my next (and inevitable ) Bullgoose purchase?"
The short answer: "Yes, in a heartbeat".
This is absolutely a quality product and a steal at a price of $20 bucks for 500g. This soap will replace my Trumper's soap as my rose selection moving forward.
Thanks again to Phil for his extremely generous sample offer.

I have used this sample I got from Phil a few times.
First, I like the scent, and so does SWMBO - always good to have her on your side. Since this was a pretty large chunk, I used it for face lathering like a shave stick. The brushes I used with it were my extreme Flattop Shavemac and the New Forest brush. Both worked up a huge amount of good lather which was enough for my normal three passes, and then there was some left for more if I needed.
Shaving performance like I would expect from a veggie soap, and it is right up there with Cade or Pre de Provence.
Would I buy this soap? Absolutely, I would definitely buy it, but I would prefer a standard sized puck that will fit in a nice wooden bowl. 500 grams of soap is a lot and since I have so many right now, I have to pass on it for the moment.
The piece I got will be either made into a shave stick for travel, or pif'ed.

i recieved a sample of the klar soap from phil and have to say it really does lather nicely and leaves a slick service to work with. i accidently slopped some water into my lathering bowl and this soap exploded on contact. 500mg of this product will go on into the new year. a very nice scent offers a pleasant shave to start the day. on my next order the bullgoose soap will be added for sure.

A very generous member sent me a sliver from his supply. I have not tried it yet, but to me it smells more like bubble gum than traditional rose. I want to eat it, not shave with it!

Just posted my review of the soap in the reviews section. Didn't rate the price, but if I had bought this soap for $20 for 500g I would rate that category a '10'
This is really some good stuff and I like it better than GFT Rose soap.

Phil sent me a small piece with an order and it was a pleasant suprise. Wow, this is a lathering monster! In our water, it is easier to lather than my personal favorite Tabac. I would say that it surpasses Tabac in lathering, slickness, cushoning, and definetely in price. It has a deep rose scent that reminds me of my great-grandparents house (nice memories indeed, maybe Pops was shaving with it back then, who knows). If you are a lover of rose scented products, you will be very satisfied with this soap.

I placed an order for 500g of this soap sometime ago. I just milled some in my soap dish this morning... Wow fantastic stuff! I found it to lather up so easy, and much more easy than some other soaps I have used. Wonderful scent as well. I would place an order for this soap again.

Used the sample from Bullgoose today. My first "shave stick" experience! Lathered up quite well. This might well be the slickest soap I have used; got some on my hand which transferred to the razor handle and it almost slipped out of my fingers! Shave was nice. Perhaps not as much cushion as my Harris and Trumper, but a close shave. My face did tingle from the lather. Will definitely be trying it again.

A fuller review will be forthcoming, but I thought I would put my $0.02 in for the time being. I missed out on the sample PIF from Phil, but reading some other information on the soap, I decided that it was a decent way to spend $20.00.
(Fair Disclosure - I got into traditional wet shaving less than a year ago, and have only been using soaps for about 3 months. I started out with mostly cream and have made a shift to soap recently. The only soaps I have used are Tabac, Mamabear (Assorted varieties) VDH Delux, VDH Glycerine, Pre de Provence and Klar Kabinett)
I have used it a couple of times (and will be using it a lot more), and I can say that it smells great - I don't normally like rose scents too much, because most of them smell like my grandma's bathroom, but this one hits just the right notes to be a "manly" rose.
The lather is super-slick, easy to work up, and fairly thick. My benchmark for lather (never mind scent - just lather) is Tabac, because I have used it a few dozen times, and as such I think I have an OK handle on it, and also just about everyone tries it once. It lathers just as easily, and is just as thick and slick, but not quite as creamy and cushion-y as Tabac. Having said that, per weight it is about 1/3 the price of Tabac and a lot of people will prefer the scent.
The value is what really got me. Per weight, this soap is barely more expensive than an Arko shave stick. It comes in at about the same price per weight as the kilo sized Italian soaps, but it is a hard soap and will probably last longer (although 2 shaves in, the jury is still out on that one.
So if you are looking for a good value, I wouldn't hesitate on this one.
