Hello to all of the members of the forum,
I am sorry to report that I have given up on traditional wet shaving. I honestly just don't see the benefit in it other than the psychological effects it may have on some people. The combination of a brush, traditional shaving cream or soap and the chrome plated razor can make for an almost aristocratic experience. However, it takes more time and concentration than modern shaving technology. When it's all said and done, I get a quicker and overall better shave with a Gillette Sensor Excel and Edge ultra-sensitive shaving gel. Of course it's all a matter of perspective and opinion, but my opinion is that it's not worth it. In order for me to continue shaving with these methods, I would need to be a shaving Luddite.
You can't skirt the minimum requirements to sell in the BST by posting an E-bay link here.

It can become a luxurious, and expensive hobby. Do what's best for you.
If no one buys the brush, keep it and use it with a cartridge razor and a quality shaving soap/cream (Tabac/Proraso).
BTW: It took me a while to find the right razor/blade combo.

Sorry it didn't work for you. You should at least keep using the brush, good shaving soap and a fine mug. Those and the good techniques you learned will go along way in improving a shave with disposibles. I do this when I travel. I take my Mach III (no heartache if I lose it), a tube of Derby shaving cream, boar bristle (what can I say, I like the boar) and my beater tin shaving mug. That and a small bottle of Nivea replenishing balm, life is still good!:tongue_sm

Good for you.
Using a brush is archaic.
I have a couple of them and a few cakes of soap and never use them. Gel is discusting and that's also something I'll never use.
Razors and blades on the other hand are practical to have around. You could always use them. You might run out of cartridges.
Ya gotta watch those links to live auctions. It's not something that's done on this board.

It took me several months to get to the point where I no longer felt as you do now. The thing that kept me with the DE shaving, though, was that I would have been going back to cartridges which might only give me a couple or three acceptable shaves before dulling, and the cartridges are much more expensive than a DE blade. I'm now at the point where a 10 minute, 2 pass shave gives me superior results every day.
How long did you try it?

I can appreciate when something doesn't work out as planned or according to expectations, the urge to quit can be quite irresistible. Wet shaving takes time and effort to master. A few weeks is probably insufficient to come to a true evaluation of the benefit proposition it offers and ultimate time commitments.
Regardless, only you can determine what's best for you.

Here, The Carpenter, has communicated the beauty of the traditional wet shave experience. As men, we rarely get moments when we can concentrate on our appearance and take pride in who we are. Wet shaving is a hell of a lot cheaper than a therapist.:thumbup1:
However, it takes more time and concentration than modern shaving technology. When it's all said and done, I get a quicker and overall better shave with a Gillette Sensor Excel and Edge ultra-sensitive shaving gel.
You know sir if you have found this hobby doesn't work for you, I wish you all the best.
Of course it's all a matter of perspective and opinion, but my opinion is that it's not worth it. In order for me to continue shaving with these methods, I would need to be a shaving Luddite.
Really, is it necessary to compare the people who enjoy this self gratifying harmless hobby to a people who destroy technology out of fear and anxiety? I contend that a traditional wet shaving enthusiast participates in this hobby not out of fear of loss, but for a zest of life.

Anything worth doing well takes time, concentration and effort. It's far easier to do all of those when you enjoy the process. Even so, taking 5 extra minutes is hardly what I'd call onerous.
I got tired of Gillette gouging me for the privilege of removing all those requirements, and not many here are in it to get the thing done ASAP.
Many would object to being called Luddites simply because you found something non conventionally modern, to not be as good for you, as it is for them.
Others here have been far more charitable, but given you joined last month and have quit half way through this month, I'd say "way to go, you really gave it a decent try".:001_rolle

For me it is an aristocratic experience . Seriously, I was probably lucky: my first de-shave was almost perfect. Great shave, no nicks no cuts, no bleeders, just great. I used a Lord L6 with a Lord blade. Do not remember the soap, might have been Cella. But you must do what best for you. Just enjoy your shaves!
Additionally, I am not so sure that the technology has advanced all that much, if at all. The only thing that seems to have been gained is speed and I would wager that the results of a proper DE shave are superior to the goo/quintuple head-headlight-seat-belt monstrosities that are called razors nowadays.
To wit, the simplicity, uncluttered beauty and utility of the simple Gillette Tech says a lot to demonstrate the KISS principle.
But then again, I may be biased. :tongue_sm
All my best with your shaving career, but I venture to say that you will be back.

There is no harm in reverting, and good luck to you.
I note your reference to the aristocratic psychological effects on the DE true believers. Then someone jumped on you for the link to your auction and the ever-vigilant mods made sure that the link was expunged, even though your intention and need were clear and no harm could have possibly resulted. This sort of Savanarolish philistinism is, alas, a feature of part of the DE community. I'm not surprised that it turned you off.

Sorry to hear it did not work out for you. I started shaving with a DE, later switched to a cartridge (with varying degrees of success) and now back to DE, SE and straight. Starting with DE, my experience is not comparable to yours. All the best in the future. :thumbup1:
Now that I think of it, many years ago I tried electric. Always wound up with bumps and burns and a crappy shave. I've heard some people love the way they shave; maybe I just did not give it enough of a chance?!?!?
I will now search for an online forum dedicated to electric shaving! Let's see, if wet shaving enthusiasts used "Badger & Blade" what would electric shavers use...
I have it! As the grinding of those electric shavers always left me with bumps I will begin my quest by searching the internet for "Bump & Grind".
I shall return and let you know what I find.

Disagree.
1. Rockets are good things in wetshaving.
2. Eagles are good things in wetshaving.
3. Wetshaving takes place on sharded servers.
4. EVE Online is done drunk more often than not. This includes the CCP staff, according to my wife.
5. Ever wonder what was inside those pilot capsules?

Seriously. He's the guy willingly shelling out 4 bucks a cart and I'm paying 18 cents per blade yet I'M the one with the "aristocratic experience"!
The world's turned upside-down.
If push comes to shove, The Carpenter, and I treated DE wet-shaving as a merely utilitarian activity, which you seem to regard it as, rather than an experience to be enjoyed or a hobby, I could make due on $30/year, all in, for blades and soap. Why do you think that millions upon millions of men all around the world still DE shave? It's because they CAN'T AFFORD $4 cartridges every week and the cost of mass-marketed canned goo.
A properly executed DE shave will, objectively, provide a better shave than any modern "system" ever could. That, however, does not happen without practice.
Yes, it can be expensive; yes, you can spend tons of money. But to not have given it a chance and given yourself the chance to build the skills and finesse necessary all the while throwing around terms like "aristocratic experience" and "Luddite" is an offense to the members of this board and a gross selling-short of yourself. Hell, you quit before you even began.
It's matter of sticking with it to get great quick shaves with a DE. If the dedication is not there neither will there be success.
Sorry it didn't work out for ya.
When I really think about it, a Fusion wasn't really that bad. Goo on OTOH really sucks, and I haven't used that in about 15 years.
A ballpoint is much faster, less messy, and much cheaper than fountain pens. Yet I love having a fountain pen in my hand, and a vintage Gillette on my face.

I don't believe that DE shaving is for everyone.
I have been at it off and on for about 18 months and I'm just now getting pretty good at it. (I may be the slowest learner in the world.)
Even now I sometimes shave with a Trac II or a Bic sensitive. Most frequently I do a hybrid shave, using a Trac II for the first pass and then finishing the shave with my DE.
Whatever works.

Sorry to to see you go THECARPENTER. You gave it go and it wasn't for you, but I take my hat off to you for trying it.
I don't see the point in haranguing the guy for giving in. Some of us made the switch and loved it so much it became a hobby. Hell, Victor Kyam bought the company. Not all of us are motivated in such ways. For many, shaving is just another daily ritual and no matter how much you dress it up it will always be just shaving. Nothing more. Perhaps that was it? Shaving is essentially just a daily ritual and not a hobby.
We here at B&B take on a different view of shaving to most. Many of us are perfectionists or strive to be. Many of us have Obsessive-Compulsive traits and take many things to the Nth degree, I know I do.
It seems that all that didn't sit too well with the guy. It's not a worry to me. To each his own I say.

@OP -- Stick with it at least long enough to sell your stuff off on the B/S/T forum. The extra time is worth it, and it's scarcely "aristocratic" (unless you want it to be). A good, home-cooked meal takes an hour or more, but you're not going to get fast food every meal to save time. Exercising takes thirty minutes to half an hour a day, but you do it because that's how long it takes. If a good shave takes twenty to thirty minutes, just stake out that amount of time--it's a great part of the morning routine, and, like showering, you can get some great thinking done while you lather & shave.

Please show some tolerance for those of us who are still slugging it out with the DE and the Bell Curve.)

Opposite for me. Wet shaving IS worth it because instead of spending $4.00 per blade per week I spend only 30 cents. I use Edge shaving gel so for me it is the choice of spending $200+ a year on blades vs $15 a year on blades.

The two shaving systems - Cartridge and DE are like apples and oranges. If you decide to stick with it, for the effort you put in, there will be richly rewarded.
When you develop your technique to the point where you can successfully shave against the grain, (it won't happen overnight,) you will - I think - be impressed with the results.
And this is coming from someone who hasn't entirely mastered his technique, but has it down enough.
DE is a strange fish. It requires patience, determination, manual dexterity and last but not least - practice.
All the best,
Go West Young Man

All I can add is that you don't have to use a DE to learn from the experience of the boards.
You can use any product you want, but a proper prep routine and good shave techniques will always be helpful in giving you a good shave.

Granted, from the tone and the response it created with some, "The Carpenter"s exit was less than gracious. Use of the terms Aristocratic and luddite were mis-applied and I can see how they could definitely be considered offensive. Just as if in response; we were to label him a dilettante. But, we wouldn't do that. :w00t:
Personally, I'm probably one of the more pedestrian members of this group. It's not a hobby. I DE shave for two reasons.
1. I prefer the results both in overall savings and in attempts to achieve a BBS.
2. DE/wet shaving is one of the few deliberate acts I allow myself that isn't driven by the clock. It's a luxury.:thumbup1: Because I allow myself the time, I DO get better results than from the goo and M3.

You articulated my view very well. Many members look at traditional wet shaving as a hobby, but I don't. For me, it's just another hygienic and aesthetic ritual like a hair cut or a shower. This isn't an unorthodox view of shaving. In fact, the original intent of shaving is for hygienic and aesthetic purposes.
I'm really surprised that some members are offended. I clearly stated that I would need to become a shaving luddite in order to continue traditional wet shaving. Maybe I should made the I bold instead of just italicizing it because some people seem to have an almost religious view of traditional wet shaving.

I SAID THAT THE EXPERIENCE, NOT THE PRICE, WAS ALMOST ARISTOCRATIC IN THE SENSE THAT A SELECT MINORITY STILL SHAVE THIS WAY, AND THE TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES TAKE MORE SKILL AND CARE. None of these statements were intended as insults and you would have understood that if your attention was paid to context instead of emotion. Not all advancements in technology are for the good. Most - but not all.
Five blades scraping down your neck versus one? A long lasting shave where I don't have 5 O'Clock Shadow until the late evening, or the next morning versus the irritation and constant shadows produced by the cartridges? The feel of warm lather as opposed to the ice cold of gel/lather? The expense of cartridges versus the low cost of DE Blades?
I have made my choice, I have taken the path least traveled, and like many others here am greatly enjoying the journey.

Now this post captures an aristocratic/elitist tone. You clearly seem to view your method of shaving as being higher on the shaving pedestal. You have taken the path least traveled and this makes you feel as though you are apart of an elite minority. Believe it or not, I am actually not offended by this opinion. However, I disagree with the notion that it gives you a closer shave and my canned gel isn't cold at all. Maybe that has to do with the fact that I shave after I shower and I wet my face with a lot of warm water before applying lather.

Actually, I'm a Gemocrat.
I am part of an elite minority. A minority of men who reject mass marketing claims, and found that shaving with a brush and soap/cream, along with a single blade delivers a closer, more comfortable, longer lasting shave. You're absolutely correct that I consider this form of shaving as being higher on the "shaving pedestal". I'd be a complete idiot to shave in a manner that I didn't think was the pinnacle of shaving goodness.
Regardless of how warm your face is, that doesn't affect the temperature of the gel in the can. That's basic physics. Did you drop that after two weeks, too?

I'm clearly having a discussion with someone who prefers style over substance. Why you would feel the need to use direct insults is below me, but I respect your opinion. Whether it be mass marketing claims or minority opinions, I see no scientific proof in any shaving notions except for the claim that blades cut hair and lather protects skin. If the traditional shaving method works for you, then keep on keeping on.

How can you shave with a multi blade with such thin skin?
And if you think that was a "direct insult":lol::lol::lol::lol: Yes, I do prefer style over substance - the style that keeps me clean shaven all day long over the substance of skin irritation and high prices.:lol::lol::lol::lol:

And I said that if it works for you then keep doing what you're doing. If it keeps you clean shaven all day then keep on shaving with it. If it keeps you irritation free then keep shaving with it. I, however, do not have the same results. I get just as close, if not closer, in a shorter amount of time and with less effort with my sensor excel and "canned goo". I also get the same amount of irritation. I hear you on the high prices, though. I'm surprised to hear that you have a reputation as a gentleman and a scholar. Keep up the good work.

It is not for everyone, and you will do what you feel is best. I went back to the Mach 3 for a while for the same desire for a speedy and close shave that I remember from cartridges. When I began proper wetshaving my results were subpar. However, in the past year I have been able to give myself a close shave. The shaves were closer than a cartridge because of how hair is cut with a DE in comparison to a mutli-blade device.
The sensor is a great cartridge razor, and I think the results are really good. The edge canned gel I cannot vouch for. It costs 2.99 so I can't imagine how cheap the chemicals must be to make it.

WOW!
this thread is a bit different than usual.
For those of you who live in the New York area or have visited, there is a restaurant in Brooklyn called Peter Luger's Steak House. Let me preface this by saying it is my favorite restaurant in the whole world - barr none! I have been frequenting that place for 37 years and every person I have ever brought there has RAVED about it.........(except one)!
He says to me all the time "I hate Luger's", and I reply, yea, and that's why there is a 4 - 5 week wait to get a table for 6! My point is he is the only one I have EVER known that did not like it, who knows why, but he is entitled to his opinion and since he is spending his money, he is free to eat at his restaurant of choice. Meantime, the rest of the world continues to wait patiently in line and pay big bucks to eat there. The moral of the story here is........To Each His Own.
Carpenter, sorry the DE wet shaving thing was not for you. I have been wet shaving for 28 years now, but just traded in my Track ll for a Gillette Tech four months ago. Needless to say the Track ll is history now. Thanks for giving it a shot!

Took me a few weeks (still one part on my neck I cant get right... dang hair grows in every direction possible) but now I get better, closer, more comfortable/relaxing shaves then I ever have. And thats using one cake of Col. Conks shave soap, a hand be down Gillette adjustable with blades from wall mart, and a tweeserman brush

Ok
Now this post captures an aristocratic/elitist tone. You clearly seem to view your method of shaving as being higher on the shaving pedestal. You have taken the path least traveled and this makes you feel as though you are apart of an elite minority. Believe it or not, I am actually not offended by this opinion. However, I disagree with the notion that it gives you a closer shave and my canned gel isn't cold at all. Maybe that has to do with the fact that I shave after I shower and I wet my face with a lot of warm water before applying lather.
Touchy
Hey Ouch, if this thread is annoying you so much why don't you find another thread that reinforces your opinion of traditional wet shaving? Smoke a joint or take a muscle relaxant. I'm just having a civil conversation. Trust me, I wont post any new threads or post in any other threads. I'll leave the club soon enough.
:lol::lol: The Clown Hosue has a new Jester!
:lol::lol:
And I said that if it works for you then keep doing what you're doing. If it keeps you clean shaven all day then keep on shaving with it. If it keeps you irritation free then keep shaving with it. I, however, do not have the same results. I get just as close, if not closer, in a shorter amount of time and with less effort with my sensor excel and "canned goo".:lol::blink::huh:
I quit the Clown House. It has been an udder waste of thyme for the last 12 months. I have gained nothing from it, other than the additional 300 pounds I have gained from sitting in front of my computer and posting and reading in this section of B&B. I wish you all good luck. If the Clown House works for you, great. I'd much rather to be thin and Czar.
PS I am selling my favorite smiley  on ebay. Bidding starts at $5.

If I were The Carpenter
And you were a luddite,
And I quit here on B&B,
Would it make you feel uptight?
If a Fusion was my tool
would you still find me,
Squirting big globs of Edge Gel,
Posting right behind me.
Here's my shaving opus post,
DE's bring me sorrow,
C. Reed said he'd help me out,
If I come back tomorrow.
If I worked my hands in goo,
And I got all hairy,
Would answer me, "So long pal,
Your mileage may vary."
If I were a shaver
at an Excel grinding,
and I came here to say "I Quit",
is the irony blinding?
If I were The Carpenter
and you were a luddite,
Would you care If I went away?
To that multiblade twilight?
Would you keep shaving the old way?
And say that the Veg smells right?

As far as B&B goes, I staunchly remain in (not quit)!
I have not considered a surgical procedure to acheive belly button inversion.
I wonder if my insurance plan would cover it or would I have to cover the bill myself?

I think we've gotten off track. Our last posts should probably either go in the Haberdashery forum or the Skin, Body and Hair Care forum.
We probably better quit discussing body parts and medical insurance and get back on point about quitting.
