I must have another one. Absolutely awesome shave! 1904 Gillette double ring, fresh IP blade, Proraso green tea soap. 1 WTG pass, 1 ATG pass, 1 touch up on both sides at the jaw line XTG. No cuts, nicks, weepers. I have never, ever had a shave this smooth. A baby's butt has nothing on my face right now. Faceturbating maniacally! Shave was so good I didn't even put on aftershave! So yes, I must have another double ring to keep in the bathroom. Unbelievable shave. A 106 year old razor did this to me. I'm in awe, in case you can't tell.

I shaved with mine for the first time last week. I find the really old Gillettes a touch on the aggressive side. Maybe a bit too much so... For those who have not had the chance to try out a double ring, I found the shave to be very similar to my single ring and my bulldog. Very close but it left my face a bit tender.

Did you shim the blade? I have an urge to whip out the old.

Good for you!
I love the old razors (Double Ring, Single, Bulldog, Pocket Eds ABC, etc)... I've had wonderful success without trying to shim the blades (and can't imagine how I'd go about it...).
Worse shave I've had in months was yesterday, with a Super Adjustable. Obviously set too high (7 - and I use that setting with my Toggle, without irritation) - and I never run into irritation or weepers/bleeders with the old razors. Go figure.
The shaves are uniformly so good I sometimes flirt with the idea of shaving only with old types... and the Double Ring.

Good for you. The Old Type has become my favorite razor with the New a close second. I used my 1904 DR only once. It was a great shave. My Bulldog is in my rotation, used it yesterday. I could never understand why you would shim the blade. It just doesn't need it.

No, I didn't shim the blade. The only time I shim is if there's an issue with play of the blade in the head.
I've used both my 1910 single ring and my 1914 Bulldog and while the single ring gave a DFS, it didn't come near the SuperBBS double ring. The Bulldog wasn't a good shave for me at all. Maybe it's too heavy for me?
Typical isn't it? The most expensive of the 3, the double ring, was given to me and here I am now having to buy one anyway thanks to one shave.
