Well, to start with, in my lifetime I'd had a lot of brushes to be used. Many came in, many left me in an orderly measure of time. But there's a couple of them I'm trying to keep till the end of my days. Here they are:
http://up.picr.de/5108068.jpg
From left to right: Thäter chubby 26 mm; Thäter cocobolo 24 mm; Thäter olive 24 mm; Rex Bundeswehr-Dachs (badger of the German Armed Forces); no-name badger; Figaro 'pig's bristle'.

They're highly regarded. But not as high as Thäter brushes.

They're highly regarded. But not as high as Thäter brushes.

When visiting Frankfurt/Germany in June, I could find Muehle brushes in nearly all the better perfume and department stores that sold shaving supplies. I never saw Thaeter or Shavemac brushes in any of these stores, some were really high end stores. I wondered about this as a Thaeter is on my list...

Here a few of mine:

From left to right:
Pre-Vulfix T2 two band, EJ BBB, Kent BLK4, Savile Row 3824, Rooney Finest 1/2, Simpson's PJ3 handle with custom D01 knot, and the Wee Scot

I also have a pair of Vie-Long Brushes, one in Silvertip and the other in Black Badger.

Here is my collection of brushes that are in my rotation at the moment. The first two pictures shows brushes I bought, the third one some I restored or made.
First picture, from left to right:
Rooney 1/1 Silvertip
Rooney 2/1 Finest
Wee Scot
New Forest

Second picture:
Simpsons Tulip 2
Saville Row 3322

Third picture:
Fuller with TGN Finest Knot
Sambar Stag antler with Shavemac Extreme Flat top, D01 Two-Band, 19 mm knot
Klenzo Butterscotch with TGN Finest

Last picture is a hair/head shot of all of them. I have a few more brushes, like a little Silvertip Grade A 18 mm as my travel brush, and three others that are not getting used right now (TGN Silvertip, TGN Finest and an UK Superbadger). Just wish my photo booth was bigger....

Eugene,

Could you tell us who makes these brushes? There have been rumors that they are re-branded Shavemac brushes. Personally, I think that Thäter uses Shavemac handles for some of their brushes. Also, are these made in Germany? I have read that this company was much like pre-Vulfix Simpson in the way that they made things (all hand made - handles, knots, etc.). What does Rein Dachs mean in English? Is that the company name, with Thäter being a brand? Thanks for the help.

Rein Dachs means Pure Badger in English. It actually means that the hair is only from badgers, but is not meant as a hair quality. I think Thaeter is mainly using silvertip hair.
Thaeter is the company name (in German one can write the "a with the two dots" as "ae", so it is pronounced the same way).

Just housebound today so here's my brushes

The " New Brushes"
120988

The English Boys
B&B LE 2009, a Kent PIFed to me from Isaacrn, C&EBBB pifed from Jakespoppy, Rooney (first one from when I restarted wetshaving, and B&B Essential

120989

The Bad Boys
G3 Eagle (king of the hill), a Vestiva (like holding a bowling ball for weight) and a Rudy Vey faux eagle (now my wifes, allowed me to get my Eagle back... but that's another story)
As you can see...I had to separate the Eagle from the faux eagle as they like to dust it up a little.
120990

The Restores
three on the left are Ever ready's and have not seen water yet... Rudy Vey reknotted them for me. One on the right is a old Century I did (It's a great lather machine)
120991

My biggest problem is ....The Eagle rules the roost and I can't think of using another brush.... this G3 is awesome

I got the brush at Gent's Best actually it's my second.... the first one was in white, It has a medium Backbone and tackles soap really well. I am a bowl latherer and it does a great job. It's no Eagle (but what is?)... It is a very heavy brush and after 3 passes you know you have used it....kind of like getting a minor workout at the same time...

So you are probably asking....why 2????

Well the short story is one of my clients is a boar brush user.. and his Boar finally gave out... He asked me where to buy a brush and I asked him if he ever tried Badger...the answer was no... so I brought a few the next time I was there.....he grabbed the Vestiva and asked if he could try it...well I ended up making a gift of it to him as I probably could never have pried it away from him.

As the heft is something I really like at times I bought another one....That was before the eagle landed....But thats another story toooooo.......

Thankfully I have no one to compete with on my brushes! How would you compare the tips in use? The LE 09 and the Eagle would be good comparisons as I have both! Thanks! :thumbup1:

brianw
09-01-2010, 05:35 PM
The tips are closer to the LE with just a hint of scrubbiness (if that's a word) although the brush has a bit more backbone then the LE

kooshman7
09-01-2010, 06:07 PM
Sounds like it would be a good brush! I'll try and hold out as long as I can for a new handle that isn't as heavy though. Thanks!

I didn't even know the BW is issuing a brush. The handle is very nice and I would love to have one, wonder what the hair quality is. In the past I have restored a brush with a quite similar handle, but it was not the Rex.

Me too. I have a couple Simpsons coming. I feel like I spam pictures of my brushes here enough that your all sick of seeing them, so I'll hold up for a day or two till they arrive. I'm proud of my little herd of brushes. What do you call a collection of brushes anyway? Is there a technical term or is it just a collection?

I love that big Kent, what size knot is it to weight in at half a pound?

Dont know exactly. It measures roughly 45-50 by my failing eyeballs. For the record, it's not a "real" shaving brush. Kent Made a few as counter displays to showcase the product while living the real brushes under glass. Kent didnt cut any corners though, its a 1st class brush en every respect, just really big.

My first brush a Vulfix"Mayfair" which is way to floppy for me but works. Semogue 830 I've only had it alittle over a week and I love it. Penworks Butterscotch 22mm-48mm finest extra stuffed that Tony set up for me. I love this brush its super dense, super soft and great back bone. Thanks Tony...

No, sorry. What i mean is: There are so many beautyful brushes in the several onlineshops:drool: and i don't have a Thäter, or Shavemac, or Simpson, or Plisson, or.... i think it will be very expensive the next few months.:crying:

You reknotted a Kent KS4? Tell me the knot was ruined. I've got one and the knot is by far the densest vintage I've ever seen. It's denser than most modern brushes.

hahaahaha - I'm very lucky to have been given the linen closet across from the boys' bathroom to fill. (The top of my dresser is covered with colognes/aftershaves... sooner or later that will become a point of contention in the household, I'm sure!)

I'm afraid that at home only I appreciate my shaving... hobby (yes! that's it! not obsession, not money pit, not... madness: hobby! bwahahahahhahahahahahahah... MINE... alllllll MINE. Precioussssss)

...but maybe... I could hang a glass door on the shave den...

That pic, should it be seen by the animal rights activists could start a war, just like what happend with fur coats, you should be ashamed:)

You have a point, but as I have picked up way more than half of these used, I would like to think I'm keeping the badgers from dying in vain. If I am taking them off the hands of people who would have let them just sit there and go to waist I am not doing as bad as I COULD be.

I have survived SBAD and toned my collection down to just 3 brushes. I am a fan of the TGN extra stuffed finest knots. Great bang for the buck.

http://ftpmyself.com/threebrushes.jpg

Left is an orange and black no name handle re-knotted with an 18mm finest at 42mm. This was an early one and I used a wee bit too much glue.

In the center is the Rudy Vey brush I had made to celebrate one year off smokes. Extra stuffed finest set at 45mm. A nice all around performer.

Right is a MYCarver butterscotch chubby handle set with a 24mm extra stuffed finest set at 48mm.

Dale, that is an elegant set of brushes. The iridescence of the orange and black is one of a kind. I love the work that Rudy did on the M7 inspired brush, and the mycarver....wow. The turning is excellent, and he really nailed the color of a vintage butterscotch. That's a set of brushes to tame raging SBAD.

That is a PCWoodcraft (http://www.badgerbrush.net/) brush in some kind of natural wood. I have one, and they are very comfortable to hold and exceptionally well made. Pat the owner/artisan is great to work with too, and can craft custom handles in a very large number of materials and finishes. My only problem with them is that the lofts are set very high , so you tend to get a large bloom and a little bit of flop. My brush is dense and has soft tips (after breaking in, originally it was just slightly skritchy). The unique hour glass shape looks a bit unorthodox, but in reality it is my most comfortable handle, and is in fact ideal for multiple hand grips (pencil, dagger, over the end).
