Finally scored a Barbasol razor and received it the other day. What a razor, makes a Merkur HD look down right wimpy by comparison. But alas I've shaved with it twice and it's just too aggressive for me, it's way more aggressive then a Fatboy on 10. Too bad as I really like the long heavy knurled handle. I guess I'll just have to copy the handle design.

Coon, interesting post. Not sure that I have seen a Barbasol razor that is comparable to the HD. What makes it more aggressive IYHO. Is it blade exposure?

Yes it has more blade exposure. I tried to swap the cap with one off a Merkur and it wouldn't thread on, they're not using the same #10-32 threads that Gillette and Merkur and every other 3 piece razor I've ever come across use. Looks to be a #10-24 but I have confirned that with a screw pitch gage.
It a really nice razor, heavy fat handle and coarser knurling then I've seen on other razors.

If you make a copy of that handle to fit a merkur, I certainly would be interested in purchasing one. I like that one much better than Merkur's new handle design. How about a double ring design?:001_tt1:

Here's some of the handles I've made so far. My next project is to make one with the end knob longer to give a better grip when head shaving the back of the head. The right end razor in the 1st pic is a HD for scale. Bob.

Actually the threads were the same just a little buggered up. I ran a tap down the hole and cleaned the threads up now I'm going to try a cap from a Tech and see if that tames this bad boy down a little.

I have a Barbasol Razor, the same one you have. I also can't shave with it, much too agressive of a razor. This razor is for a man with a tough skin and a very heavy beard. My razor of choice is a Meukur Slant Bar with either Derby or Feather blades, with this set up I get nice smooth shaves.
The Barbasol Razor is of very good quality, nice and heavy with a long handle.
The idea I really like is the inside cap that is attached to the handle, the sides are curved for ease in blade replacement and removing the top cap.
I hate to say it but it makes the Meuker line of razors look cheap, its too bad it is so agressive.

That's really interesting work, Bob. I love the knurled metal handles when shaving, they give a real nice feel to my "grip".
