Arrived yesterday, had to show it off. Knot size is 24 mm and loft is 46 mm. Should be a face lathering beast, will try it out tomorrow morning.

Congrats on the awesome brush. Shavemacs are top notch and Bernd is a pleasure is he not? I got a 24mm super flat a couple weeks back and could not be happier with it. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do. The hand grip on this little brush is quite nice dont you think?

That looks very impressive! I would really like to know your opinion of this brush, since this is exactly the combo I would like - 24mm knot with 46mm loft. What I'm looking for is a super soft brush with backbone, which it seems the D01 hair should provide. In addition, I want the brush to release lather. I don't want to have to squeeze the bristles to get the lather for that 2nd and 3rd pass. Please post your impressions once you've used it a bit.

Lando, What size is the Rooney. I have been looking at both Rooneys and Shavemacs lately.

Thanks for the replies. Will post a mini review once I've broken in the brush a bit. I do agree that the handle shape is quite beautiful, I like the combination of bulbous top and contoured midsection.

That is a style 1 size 2 or medium, and perfect for me. Although many are happy with the 1/1, I have read some who thought it was a tad undersized.

Very nice, enjoy! my 30/55 scrubber (right). The 28/65 left is quite stiff too for its height. Shavemac rocks!

:w00t: I like them both! Are they 2 or 3 band? I see a little bit of color at the bottom but I'm assuming they are 2 band as my 2 band looks about the same. I would love a 30mm like that. Maybe someday I'll pick one up.

Lando, if you do not mind, could you please take a picture of the bottom of the brush's handle?

The brush looks great. What do you think about the loft size? I have a 50 mm three band D01.

Same here. Should be interesting to see if it blooms much, too.

I'm predicting you will need a lot of patience to let that brush break in properly.

My 2 band D01 in 28mm with a 65mm loft took literally months of occasional use before I could really enjoy using it. The tips where always soft, but it felt like it had no flow through, a real hog and the backbone was tremendous. It really came around thou.

I suggest you do the vinegar soak and plenty of practice lathers on it to accelerate the process.

UPDATE: I have used this brush now maybe 3-4 times with a couple of vigorous hand lathers thrown in. It is so dense, has such backbone, that my face has been getting beaten to a pulp trying to face lather. And the brush cannot really make a decent lather at this point in its infancy. Badger funk was mild and is gone now. I understand that two band brushes can take a while to break in, my Tulip took a couple of weeks. I suspect huracan is right and that this brush will take a lot longer than that to be fully broken in.

The base of the handle is flat as shown in the photo. Very pleasing shape, comfortable in the hand. Handle dimensions for this knot size are 50 mm H x 40 mm D. See the chart here http://www.shavemac.com/shop/products/Shaving-Brushes/Traditional-Lines-D01/Shaving-Brush-SB1-167-2B.html

Wow, it did not bloom much at all. You could always test lather a few extra times per day to speed up that breaking-in process.

That's exactly the reason why I didn't get a 2-band Shavemac...After emailing Bernd, he actually recommended the D01 or regular Silvertip (both of which I have now). And both have very hefty backbone and very soft luxurious tips...but they never leave your face looking battered up...even during first use.

Something you may want to try...it was suggested to me when I first started wet shaving form an old pro. Wash the brush in a luxury shampoo then condition it with something equally as high end. I ended up using the girls salon shampoo and conditioner and it helped my first brushes break in.

This kind of hair likes to be soaked before use. Are you giving it a good soak in hot water for 1-2 min before use?

huntmol
08-26-2010, 04:41 PM
A brush with that much backbone and density will likely need a good 4-5 weeks of breaking in.
I felt the same way as you (face getting beaten to a pulp) the first time I picked up my Rooney 1-1 in Finest. It was like lathering with a sandblaster!
Keep at it though, I have no doubt that it will be worth it in the end.

P.S. Just wondering - I noticed on the order page (http://www.shavemac.com/shop/products/Shaving-Brushes/Traditional-Lines-D01/Shaving-Brush-SB1-167-2B.html) that Bernd now has the option of choosing between a Bulb and a Fan shape. Which one did you choose when ordering?

Fan shaped.

Man, I'm not big on that handle shape. I like the plain PJ-style one in the Traditional Lines better. Knots are different, though.

If the primary purpose of a brush is to scrub one's face, then this should be perfect. If it's to make a good lather for shaving, I can see why there could be issues.
