View Full Version : Micheron: Grelot in disguise?

This was my first straight, and hasn't gotten much love since I was just starting--if nothing else, I figured that my early, hamfisted stropping had ruined the edge. Yesterday morning, I got a wild hair to revisit the Micheron; without any expectations, I gave it a few laps on a barber's hone, followed by a few with CroOx on balsa...and got perhaps the best shave of my life. Today was a repeat performance. It got me wondering about the razor's provenance.

I've never been able to find out much about Micheron razors in the past, but there's one on eBay France right now; it's clearly made by Le Grelot, with the characteristic rising sun motif on the shank. This makes me wonder if my razor is also a Le Grelot in disguise. The lines certainly look similar to some Grelots I've seen. Anybody have any input?

Whoever made it, it's my new favorite razor, and a reminder that after a solid year of straights, I'm learning every day.

I never heard of it, but it is possible.

Regardless of make and model, looks like you have a new found love :thumbup1:. Beautiful blade. Enjoy it...I am sure for many years :001_smile

It's possible but I couldn't find any information about the maker, not even on the French forums. There are a few makers in France other than LeGrelot but I never heard of that one...

As far as I know, Le Grelot made rebranding of some razor like the Royal Canada, for ex.
I've had once a 7/8 Le Grelot with a "Le Grelot" in the shank, but the blade etching and the case had a distinct brand, "Le merle blanc".
In this particular case, I don't really think that Micheron was made by Le Grelot. "Micheron" was the family name of 2 brothers who probably made these razors in a village other than Thiers, in Chalon sur Saone.
But I could be wrong.

Possible. Le Grelot did rebrand, however you would have to find an actual Le Grelot blade to match up with your razor blade style and model. Not an easy task.

I have a re-branded Le Grelot, and I know Ivan has, or had, at least one.
