OK. Having a St. Paddy's Party. What beer to provide?

I say provide an assortment...allows people to try some different offerings.

Excellent idea - you'll cover the bases, as well as possibly introducing someone to a new favorite.
It's a "win-win," to use a phrase I hate.
Am I to understand that the Irish are now drinking beer?

Don't forget the Beamish!
One St. Patty's Day in College, we got a keg of Guinness and a keg of Harp's. Nothing like a Black & Tan Binge! :001_tt1:

I voted for Smithwick's but my favorite is Beamish. Which cannot be found in Texas. But Smiddicks is all over the place so life isn't all that bad.

Beamish is very good indeed, hard to find in Michigan, but I will be searching tomorrow.

Is the Harp you get in the States the same as the Harp lager we used to get in Britain? You don't see it much these days as it's so bad nobody ever touched it!

Guiness is my favorite. But....what about Killians Irish Red?

Guiness is my favorite of the bunch, especially when enjoyed in Ireland or the UK. I find the taste to be significantly different in the US when compared to Ireland, Scotland, and England. At the Guiness brewery they swore it's the same formula worldwide...maybe it's the water or the amount of time kept under nitrogen...
I personally find Murphy's a great beer as well...a really nice everyday kind of beer.

I got one (and a Beamish Red too) when I had a layover in Shannon Ireland, VERY NICE!
I voted Guinness because it is my go to brew.

Bruce:
Killian's used to be my favorite US beer before those bastids changed the recipe to a lager. I truly love Guiness on tap when I can find it. It should be possible to rent the set up (nitrogen and a special tap). Anything but the cheap green colored american lager that the students will be guzzling this Saturday *shudder*.

Can only speak for myself, however Harp is fairly popular here in the States. Of course you may enjoy certain American Beers that we fell are just OK or less than adequate.
There should be an "Other" choice in this poll. Many were left out.

It's not brewed in Ireland, but the style is good: Trinity Red Ale, usually available for <$5 per sixer at Trader Joe's, if you got one locally.

I'm a real ale man myself (goes with the morris dancer image!) and I'm not keen on lagers, especially the British brewed pigswill. I have tried a few of the American 'proper' beers like Sam Adams etc and they are rather good. You can keep your Bud over there!

I voted for Guinness in the poll but Wexford's Irish Ale is by far the best.

Guinness... uugh. Way too filling, and skimpy on the ABV. My favorite Irish-style beer comes from a local Cleveland brewery -- Great Lakes' Brewery Conway's Irish Ale. A case rarely lasts longer than a couple days in my 'fridge.
But as St. Patty's Day goes, there's naught better than to celebrate it in the proper Irish Catholic style:

I voted Smithwick's...although this year it's whisky....Jameson for me! :)

I believe that Killian's Irish Red is made in upstate NY and is just a normal lager with a touch of caramel food coloring and red dye added at the last stage of brewing. Nothing too special, IMO. They just added the "Irish" to make it seem like a boutique brew.

Correction: Killian's Irish Red is brewed by Coors at their Golden, CO brewery under contract from George Killian Lett's brewery in Enniscorthy, Ireland. The color comes from the malt used, classified as a caramel malt (at one time, I could quote you the color in degrees Lovibond...), which Coors produces themselves in their private malthouse, also in Golden. However, you are correct that it is technically a lager, as all of Coors' brews use their "house" lager strain. Probably Coors' best mass-market offering along with their Blue Moon Belgian White and Blue Moon Pumpkin seasonal.
I was a tour guide at the Golden, CO brewery back in 2004. Notice, you don't see any Coors products in my top 5, though.

Guinness Foreign Extra Stout as the "deluxe" brew
Beamish as the standard brew
Bushmill's Malt Whisky as the spirit of choice
Another Great British whisky
